[Termes IGN] recouvrement d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) Over the past decade, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to create definitive national and global data sets consisting of precision corrected Landsat Multispectral Scanner (Mss) and Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes. One important application of these data is the derivation of large area ]andcover products spanning multiple satellite scenes. A popular approach to land-cover mapping on this scale involves merging constituent scenes into image mosaics prior to image clustering and cluster labeling, thereby eliminating redundant geographic coverage arising from overlapping imaging swaths of adjacent orbital tracks. In this paper, arguments are presented to support the view that areas of overlapping coverage contain important information that can be used to assess and improve classification performance. A methodology is presented for the creation of large area land-cover products through the compositing of independently classified scenes. Statistical analyses of classification consistency between scenes in overlapping regions are employed both to identify mislabeled clusters and to provide a measure of classification confidence for each scene at the cluster level. During classification compositing, confidence measures are used to rationalize conflicting classifications in overlap regions and to create a relative confidence layer, sampled at the pixel level, which characterizes the spatial variation in classification quality over the final product. The procedure is illustrated with results from a synoptic mapping project of the Great Lakes watershed that involved the classification and compositing of 46 Landsat Mss scenes. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The availability of hyperspectral images expands the capability of using image classification to study detailed characteristics of objects, but at a cost of having to deal with huge data sets. This work studies the use of the principal component analysis as a preprocessing technique for the classification of hyperspectral images. Two hyperspectral data sets, HYDICE and AVIRIS, were used for the study. A brief presentation of the principal component analysis approach is followed by an examination of the information contents of the principal component image bands, which revealed that only the first few bands contain significant information. The use of the first few principal component images can yield about 70 percent correct classification rate. This study suggests the benefit and efficiency of using the principal component analysis technique as a preprocessing step for the classification of' hyperspectral images. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this study was to improve the quality of the digital land-cover and land-use classification when using high-resolution (10 to 30 m) remote sensing data. Three classification techniques were compared, which can be divided into two groups : single classifiers (a five-nearest neighbour and the C4.5 decision tree classifier) and multiple classifier systems (BAGFS). Textural and contextual features (roads, hydrology, relief, etc.) were introduced during the classification process. Eleven land-cover categories, in a Belgian varied landscape, were analysed and classified using Landsat Thematic Mapper data. The accuracy assessment increased with the introduction of textural features and contextual data, between 0.60 and 0.82 for the Kappa coefficient. The best kappa value was achieved using numerous textural and contextual features with the multiple classifier system (BAGFs). [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Many studies have used remote sensing to detect forest conversion activities in the Amazon for the purposes of directing policy or generating data for environmental modeling. However, this technology has yet to be applied towards forest law enforcement in the region. In this study we design a violation detection system for Areas of Permanent Preservation using Landsat TM data and GIS, and test it in a logging town in the Eastern Amazon. Our detection methodology generates a simple forest cover map using unsupervised classification techniques, as well as river maps derived directly from remotely sensed data. Data produced through this detection system include a forest cover map, waterway map, map of Areas of Permanent Preservation, and violation map. We include a discussion of the advantages and limitations of each of these data products for law enforcement purposes in the region. Violations were detected in 60% of all Areas of Permanent Preservation in pastures and other cleared properties, showing extremely low law abidance once deforestation occurs. Overall, violation detection resulted in accuracy levels of 88.6%, illustrating the viability of efficiently monitoring land cover for law enforcement purposes in the Amazon.
