[Termes IGN] segmentation multi-échelleRésumé : (Auteur) Multi-resolution segmentation, as one of the most popular approaches in object-oriented image segmentation, has been greatly enabled by the advent of the commercial software, eCognition. However, the application of multi-resolution segmentation still poses problems, especially in its operational aspects. This paper addresses the issue of optimization of the algorithm-associated parameters in multi-resolution segmentation. A framework starting with the definition of meaningful objects is proposed to find optimal segmentations for a given feature type. The proposed framework was tested to segment three exemplary artificial feature types (sports fields, roads, and residential buildings) in IKONOS multi-spectral images, based on a sampling scheme of all the parameters required by the algorithm. Results show that the feature-type-oriented segmentation evaluation provides an insight to the decision-making process in choosing appropriate parameters towards a high-quality segmentation. By adopting these feature-type-based optimal parameters, multi-resolution segmentation is able to produce objects of desired form to represent artificial features. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Forested stand structure is an important target variable within the fields of wildlife ecology. Remote sensing has often been suggested as a viable alternative to time consuming field and aerial investigations to determine forest structural attributes. In this study, 44 stands of recently harvested, regenerating, and old growth forest within the Foothills Model Forest in west-central Alberta were selected to test the ability of pan-sharpened SPOT-5 spectral response to classify stand structure. For each stand, a Structural Complexity Index (SCI) was calculated from field data using principal components analysis. To complement the spectral response data set and further increase accuracy, the normalized difference moisture index (NDMI) and three window sizes (55, 1111, and 2525) of first- (mean and standard deviation) and second-order (homogeneity, entropy, contrast, and correlation) textural measures were calculated over the pan-sharpened image. Stepwise multivariate regression analysis was used to determine the best explanatory model of the SCI using the spectral and textural data. The NDMI, first-order standard deviation and second-order correlation texture measures were better able to explain differences in SCI among the 44 forest stands (r2 = 0.79). The most appropriate window size for the texture measures was 55 indicating that this is a measure only detectable at a very high spatial resolution. The resulting classified SCI values were comparable to the actual field level SCI (r2 = 0.74, p = 0.01) and were limited by the strong variability within stands. Future research may find this measure useful either as a separate parameter or as an indicator of forest age for use in wildlife habitat modelling. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a novel rough set approach to discover classification rules in real-valued spatial data in general and remotely sensed data in particular. A knowledge induction process is formulated to select optimal decision rules with a minimal set of features necessary and sufficient for a remote sensing classification task. The approach first converts a real-valued or integer-valued decision system into an interval-valued information system. A knowledge induction procedure is then formulated to discover all classification rules hidden in the information system. Two real-life applications are made to verify and substantiate the conceptual arguments. It demonstrates that the proposed approach can effectively discover in remotely sensed data the optimal spectral bands and optimal rule set for a classification task. It is also capable of unraveling critical spectral band(s) discerning certain classes. The framework paves the road for data mining in mixed spatial databases consisting of qualitative and quantitative data. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) We used LiDAR topographic data, AVIRIS hyperspectral data, and locally measured tidal fluctuations to characterize patterns of plant distribution within a southern California salt marsh (Carpinteria Salt Marsh (CSM)). LiDAR data required ground truthing and correction before they were suitable for use. Twenty to forty percent of the uncertainty associated with LiDAR was due to variance in the elevation of the target surface, the balance was attributed to error inherent in the LiDAR system. The incidence of LiDAR penetration of plant canopy cover (i.e., registration of ground elevation) was only three percent. The depth of LiDAR penetration into the plant canopy varied according to plant species composition; plant species-specific corrections significantly improved LiDAR accuracy (58% reduction in overall uncertainty) and with the use of ground-based surveys, reduced overall RMSE to an average of 6.3 cm in vegetated areas. A supervised classification of AVIRIS data was used to generate a vegetation map with six classification types; overall classification accuracy averaged 59% with a kappa coefficient of 0.40. The vegetation classification map was overlaid with a LiDAR-based digital elevation model (DEM) to compute elevation distributions and frequencies of tidal inundation. The average elevations of the dominant plant classifications found in CSM (e.g., Salicornia virginica, Jaumea carnosa, and salt-grass mix, a mixture of multiple marsh plant species) occurred within a 17 cm range, a vertical change that resulted in a 7% difference in the period of tidal inundation.
