[Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) While some geographic phenomena hold uniform properties, such as land-use zones, many geographic phenomena are distributed such that their properties vary across an extended area. While such distributed phenomena are best represented as continuous surfaces, individual objects (or features) often emerge among clusters of high or low values in a field. For example, areas of relatively high elevation may be viewed as hills, while flat low-lying areas are perceived as plains in a terrain. A comprehensive spatial analysis of distributed phenomena should examine both the spatial variance of its attribute surfaces and the characteristics of individual objects embedded in the field. An immediate research challenge to meet such spatial analysis needs is that these emerging features often have vague boundaries that vary according to the use and the user. The nature, and even existence, of these objects depend upon the range of values, or thresholds, used to define them. We propose a representation framework that takes a dual raster-vector approach to capture both field- and object-like characteristics of distributed phenomena and maintain multiple representations of embedded features delineated by boundaries that are likely to be relevant for the expected uses of the data. We demonstrate how boundaries influence the analysis and understanding of spatiotemporal characteristics of distributed phenomena. Using precipitation as a proof of concept, we show how the proposed framework enhances semantic flexibility in spatiotemporal query and analysis of distributed phenomena in geographic information systems. [Termes IGN] température de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) A vegetation index (V1) model for predicting evapotranspiration (ET) from data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on the EOS-1 Terra satellite and ground meteorological data was developed for riparian vegetation along the Middle Rio Grande River in New Mexico. Ground ET measurements obtained from eddy covariance towers at four riparian sites were correlated with MODIS Vis, MODIS land surface temperatures (LSTs), and ground micrometeorological data over four years. Sites included two saltcedar (Tamarix ramossissima) and two Rio Grande cottonwood (Populus deltoides ssp. Wislizennii) dominated stands. The Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) was more closely correlated (r =0.76) with ET than the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI; r =0.68) for ET data combined over and species. Air temperature (Ta)measured over the canopy from towers was the meteorological variable that was most closely correlated with ET (r =0.82). MODIS LST data at 1- and 5-km resolutions were too coarse to accurately measure the radiant surface temperature within the narrow riparian corridor; hence, energy balance methods for estimating ET using MODIS LSTs were not successful. On the other hand, a multivariate regression equation for predicting ET from EVI and Ta had an r 2=0. 82 across sites, species, and years. The equation was similar to VI-ET models developed for crop species. The finding that ET predictions did not require species-specific equations is significant, inasmuch as these are mixed vegetation zones that cannot be easily mapped at the species level. [Termes IGN] traitement de données GNSSIndex. décimale : 30.61 Systèmes de Positionnement par Satellites du GNSS Résumé : (Auteur) Geodetic observations are usually processed by means of the Least Squares Method. However, this algorithm delivers reliable valuations of unknown parameters und associated accuracy measures only if the functional and stochastic models are appropriate. Observations using the Global Positioning System (GPS) are affected by various influences, e.g. by the atmosphere. Hence, it seems to be a reasonable conclusion that the commonly used stochastic model of GPS-observations with a scaled identity matrix with homoscedastic (i.e. equal variance) and uncorrelated errors is not adequate. The knowledge of the stochastic behaviour of GPS-observations can be improved by analyzing time series of residuals originating from Least Squares evaluation. Based on this analysis a procedure for modifying the covariance matrix of double-differenced GPS carrier-phase observations is presented. Essentially, it consists of two steps. At first individual variance functions for all double-difference observations depending on the satellite elevation for modifying the main diagonal of its covariance matrix are estimated. Secondly, temporal correlations are determined to adapt the other parts of the covariance matrix. All steps are verified by suitable statistical tests. The procedure is applied to extensive data sets with different characteristics. The results of the evaluation process, taking into account all realizations of the stochastic model mentioned above, are presented. It is shown that modifying the main diagonal of the covariance matrix with elevation-dependent variance functions leads to significant changes in the estimated ellipsoidal height of GPS-stations only for long baselines. The accuracy measures are not affected by this modification. In contrast to these results, considering temporal correlations in the covariance matrix of GPS-double difference observations causes distinct changes in the accuracy measures of all coordinate components independently of the baseline length.
