[Termes IGN] vagueRésumé : (auteur) One of the CIDCO’s (The Interdisciplinary Center for the Development of Ocean Mapping) HydroBall® GNSS buoys has been specifically adapted to evaluate its potential for wave measurement at centimeter accuracy level. Multiple GNSS processing strategies were tested, namely PPK (Post-Processed Kinematic), PPP (Precise Point Positioning), and TRP (Time Relative Positioning). Experiments were carried out in a hydraulic flume where waves of different amplitudes and periods were generated in a controlled environment. The wave heights obtained by the various GNSS solutions were compared with ultrasonic gauge measurements placed along the flume. The best results were obtained with the PPK and TRP solutions with root mean squared (RMS) values of 2 cm (on average). The main advantages of the TRP solution are that it does not require any reference station nearby (contrary to PPK) or precise ephemerides (required by PPP). A sinusoidal regression comparison of the wave height time series allowed determination of the wave period and amplitude with mean errors of 0.06 s and 0.8 cm, respectively. [Termes IGN] théorie des probabilitésRésumé : (auteur) Biomass inventories that employ airborne laser scanning (ALS) require models that can predict tree diameter at breast height (DBH) from ALS-derived tree dimensions, as ALS can usually not directly measure DBH due to scanning angle, inadequate point density and canopy obstruction. Although some work has been done in using correlation as a measure of dependence to describe the linear relationship between variable means, none has investigated the copula-based measure of dependence for the prediction of DBH from ALS-derived height and crown diameter. Following the application of a locally-estimated copula method to 79 sample plots in eastern Finland, we compared the performance of the copula method with a baseline local regression (LOESS) model and an ordinary least squares (OLS) model. We found that the copula method outperformed the OLS model by decreasing 30% of the root-mean-squared error (RMSE). The copula method performed slightly better than the LOESS model for the original sample, but the results of the bootstrap samples showed that the variance in RMSE was sixteen times lower in the copula method than the LOESS model, suggesting that the copula had a more consistent and robust model performance across the 10,000 bootstrap samples. Moreover, while the LOESS model only predicts the conditional mean of the response variable, the copula method can also predict median and other quantiles. [Termes IGN] résiduRésumé : (Auteur) To establish a basis for the utilization of lidar topography as a data source for coastal geomorphological analyses, this study generated statistical metrics of lidar error through the comparison of a June 2014 USGS collection of airborne lidar with a concurrently collected high-accuracy GPS topographical survey collected within the beach and dunes of a portion of Fire Island National Seashore. The examination of bare earth lidar error within the experiment site revealed a complex association between accuracy and environment within the coastal landscape. Accuracy was constrained to better than 50 cm RMSE in areas with vegetated dune topography and, overall, a 38.9 cm RMSE was measured. Higher accuracies were achieved in the flat, non-vegetated beach. A three-dimensional minimization of residuals between the lidar and GPS surveys reduced the total RMSE to 25.2 cm, indicating a correctable systematic offset between the surface generated from the lidar and the true ground surface. There is a scarcity of studies addressing this issue for clonal Eucalypt stands in Brazil. Thus, this paper aims to develop a compatible individual-tree and stand-level growth and yield system for clonal Eucalypt stands in Brazil. The dataset used in this study is derived from remeasurement information of sixteen TECHS sites. At every site, eleven Eucalypt clones were planted in single block plots, while extra plots under a rainfall exclusion regime were also installed in fourteen sites. Prediction and projection diameter percentile equations were developed, as well as an individual-tree mortality equation and a generalized height-diameter equation. In addition, a detailed explanation of the structural architecture of the developed compatible growth and yield system is provided. Differences when forecasting forest afforestation and updating forest inventories were highlighted in order to provide the proper use of the developed growth and yield system. Finally, the individual-tree equations were validated through the use of the rainfall exclusion regime plots as was the growth and yield system when applied for prediction and projection purposes. The individual-tree level equations provided accurate estimates. The newly developed compatible growth and yield system also displayed unbiased and accurate estimates. The system achieved full compatibility between individual-tree and stand-level estimates and produced accurate stand table estimates. The growth and yield system presented is a powerful analytical tool that can serve to update inventory data in tropical Brazil and also to provide estimates for expected forest afforestation. The system has the capability of providing detailed outputs, which allows forest managers to consider merchandizing the clonal Eucalypt stands into multiple products. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (auteur) The short revisit time of the Sentinel-2 (S2) constellation entails a large availability of remote sensing data, but S2 data have been rarely used to predict soil organic carbon (SOC) content. Thus, this study aims at comparing the capability of multispectral S2 and airborne hyperspectral remote sensing data for SOC prediction, and at the same time, we investigated the importance of spectral and spatial resolution through the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the variable importance in the prediction (VIP) models and the spatial variability of the SOC maps at field and regional scales. We tested the capability of the S2 data to predict SOC in croplands with quite different soil types and parent materials in Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium, using multivariate statistics and local ground calibration with soil samples. We split the calibration dataset into sub-regions according to soil maps and built a multivariate regression model within each sub-region. The prediction accuracy obtained by S2 data is generally slightly lower than that retrieved by airborne hyperspectral data. The ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) is higher than 2 in Luxembourg (2.6) and German (2.2) site, while it is 1.1 in the Belgian area. After the spectral resampling of the airborne data according to S2 band, the prediction accuracy did not change for four out of five of the sub-regions. The variable importance values obtained by S2 data showed the same trend as the airborne VIP values, while the importance of SWIR bands decreased using airborne data resampled according the S2 bands. These differences of VIP values can be explained by the loss of spectral resolution as compared to APEX data and the strong difference in terms of SNR between the SWIR region and other spectral regions. The investigation on the spatial variability of the SOC maps derived by S2 data has shown that the spatial resolution of S2 is adequate to describe SOC variability both within field and at regional scale.
