[Termes IGN] télédétection par lidarRésumé : (auteur) Forest mensuration remains critical in managing our forests sustainably, however, capturing such measurements remains costly, time-consuming and provides minimal amounts of information such as diameter at breast height (DBH), location, and height. Plot scale remote sensing techniques show great promise in extracting detailed forest measurements rapidly and cheaply, however, they have been held back from large-scale implementation due to the complex and time-consuming workflows required to utilize them. This work is focused on describing and evaluating an approach to create a robust, sensor-agnostic and fully automated forest point cloud measurement tool called the Forest Structural Complexity Tool (FSCT). The performance of FSCT is evaluated using 49 forest plots of terrestrial laser scanned (TLS) point clouds and 7022 destructively sampled manual diameter measurements of the stems. FSCT was able to match 5141 of the reference diameter measurements fully automatically with mean, median and root mean squared errors (RMSE) of 0.032 m, 0.02 m, and 0.103 m respectively. A video demonstration is also provided to qualitatively demonstrate the diversity of point cloud datasets that the tool is capable of measuring. FSCT is provided as open source, with the goal of enabling plot scale remote sensing techniques to replace most structural forest mensuration in research and industry. Future work on this project will seek to make incremental improvements to this methodology to further improve the reliability and accuracy of this tool in most high-resolution forest point clouds. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) In the case of tree species delineation with very high spatial resolution (VHR) images, is desirable that each segment corresponds to one individual tree crown (ITC). However, in order to have a segmentation algorithm that generates segments matching to ITCs, its parameters ought to be properly tuned. Aiming to avoid time-consuming trial-and-error procedures associated with this task, some initiatives for the automatic search of segmentation parameters have been developed, such as metaheuristic methods. The objective of this work was to test the automatic tuning of segmentation parameters of three segmentation algorithms for the delineation of ITCs belonging to a native endangered species in a subtropical forest area, comparing this method with the traditional trial-and-error approach. Two datasets (WorldView-2 and an orthoimage) and three segmentation algorithms (multiresolution, mean-shift and graph-based) were tested. For the automatic approach, a hybrid metaheuristic method was applied to accomplish the automatic search of parameters for the segmentation algorithms, while for the trial-and-error, a visual assessment was conducted for each set of parameters tested. Four supervised metrics were used to assess the quality of the segmentation results for the optimization approach and for the final set of parameters chosen in the trial-and-error approach. Results showed that none of the algorithms, datasets or approaches differ too much. The evaluation metrics values were lower, indicating that the reference ITCs polygons matched with the segmentation results. Despite the similar results, the automatic tuning of segmentation parameters proved to be a feasible alternative to reduce the subjectivity and the human effort in the choice of segmentation parameters as compared to the trial-and error approach. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (auteur) Most of the worlds’ population relies on the processes and ecosystems in the coastal zone. Understanding the long-term change of coastlines is critical for the effective management of these complex, and heavily utilised regions. There has been a recent increase of studies focused on large-scale shoreline change mapping. However, most current methods are optimized for extracting shorelines of wave-dominated sandy beaches, which are only 30% of the global coasts, resulting in uncertainty for other environments such as tidal flats and bedrock. Here, we propose a new shoreline change mapping workflow, using the Landsat archive and Google Earth Engine, which increases compute efficiency and is suitable for retrieving shoreline changes for various coastal landforms at high tide instead of mean sea level. By validating against regional and continental datasets in Australia, we found the approach here produced high mapping accuracy and showed particularly better performance at tide-dominated coasts, where tidal flats and intertidal bars and ridges are present, when compared to past approaches. This is an important step forward since tide-dominated and tide-modified coasts are widely distributed at tropical low latitudes. We also explored the global application of the proposed method and derived hotspots of shoreline erosion and accretion that agreed with multiple regional studies across the world. Most of these hotspots were related to river sediment discharge and human intervention on the coast, as expected. Although it requires further validation, the global application of our method demonstrates the significance of this approach in identifying potential threats to coastal zones, especially in complex tide-dominated environments, which can facilitate effective coastal management. [Termes IGN] signal lidarRésumé : (auteur) LiDAR footprint, defined as the illumination area of LiDAR sensor on the ground, is the fundamental unit that the sensor collects information from. The design of footprint size crucially influences the acquired LiDAR signals. For large-footprint full-waveform LiDAR, a well-designed footprint size is indispensable to acquire accurate and complete vertical profiles of scene targets. The methods that design the footprint size are increasingly needed to satisfy various application requirements. In this study, an analytical method to designing the footprint size is proposed for forest and topography applications. It is established based on a mixture Gaussian model and the designed footprint size ensures the signals of vegetation and ground can be completely extracted. Experiment results with our method show that the footprint size is preferably in the range of 10.6–25.0 m for forest application, while it is less than 32.3 m for topography application. The intersection of the two sets satisfies both applications. Furthermore, a series of sensibility studies were performed to analyze the influence of multiple key parameters to the optimal footprint size, including the scene characteristics, instrumental configurations, and application requirements. This study provides a theoretical basis for the design of future large-footprint full-waveform laser altimeters. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The idea of virtual time machines in digital environments like hand-held virtual reality or four-dimensional (4D) geographic information systems requires an accurate positioning and orientation of urban historical images. The browsing of large repositories to retrieve historical images and their subsequent precise pose estimation is still a manual and time-consuming process in the field of Cultural Heritage. This contribution presents an end-to-end pipeline from finding relevant images with utilization of content-based image retrieval to photogrammetric pose estimation of large historical terrestrial image datasets. Image retrieval as well as pose estimation are challenging tasks and are subjects of current research. Thereby, research has a strong focus on contemporary images but the methods are not considered for a use on historical image material. The first part of the pipeline comprises the precise selection of many relevant historical images based on a few example images (so called query images) by using content-based image retrieval. Therefore, two different retrieval approaches based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) are tested, evaluated, and compared with conventional metadata search in repositories. Results show that image retrieval approaches outperform the metadata search and are a valuable strategy for finding images of interest. The second part of the pipeline uses techniques of photogrammetry to derive the camera position and orientation of the historical images identified by the image retrieval. Multiple feature matching methods are used on four different datasets, the scene is reconstructed in the Structure-from-Motion software COLMAP, and all experiments are evaluated on a newly generated historical benchmark dataset. A large number of oriented images, as well as low error measures for most of the datasets, show that the workflow can be successfully applied. Finally, the combination of a CNN-based image retrieval and the feature matching methods SuperGlue and DISK show very promising results to realize a fully automated workflow. Such an automated workflow of selection and pose estimation of historical terrestrial images enables the creation of large-scale 4D models.
