[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Unlike the simplification of independent line features, the generalization of terrain contour is to handle the “line group", which describes the geomorphologic characteristics, such as the terrain valley and ridge. In decision level, the real operation object in the terrain generalization is not the line segment itself but the drainage network contained in the contour representation. This paper presents a method to generalize contour based on the analysis of drainage structure. The first step is to extract the drainage system from the contour lines and build the associations between the valley branch and the bend group of contour lines. The second step is to analyse the properties of drainage tree structure to decide which branch to be removed, and then to perform the geometric elimination of bends. In this study the extraction of drainage system is directly from contour (other than from DTM data) based on the Delaunay triangulation model. Three kinds of tree structure organization are investigated: the hierarchical binary tree representing the bend inclusion relationship contained in each contour line, the planar structure tree describing valley topological relationship and the semantic hierarchical tree representing valley joint level structure from the point of view of hydrology. Initially, a laser point cluster in 3D object space was recognized as an isolated building object if all the member points were similarly attributed as building points by investigating the height property of laser points and the normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVI) driven from IKONOS imagery. As modelling cues, rectilinear lines around building outlines collected by either data-driven or model-driven manner were integrated in order to compensate the weakness of both methods. Finally, a full description of building outlines was accomplished by merging convex polygons, which were obtained as a building region was hierarchically divided by the extracted lines using the Binary Space Partitioning (BSP) tree. The system performance was evaluated by objective evaluation metrics in comparison to the Ordnance Survey's MasterMap®. This evaluation showed the delineation performance of up to 0.11 (the branching factor) and the detection percentage of 90.1% (the correctness) and the overall quality of 80.5%. [Termes IGN] vectorisationRésumé : (Auteur) A method for the automatic detection and vectorization of roads from lidar data is presented. To extract roads from a lidar point cloud, a hierarchical classification technique is used to classify the lidar points progressively into road and non-road points. During the classification process, both intensity and height values are initially used. Due to the homogeneous and consistent nature of roads, a local point density is introduced to finalize the classification. The resultant binary classification is then vectorized by convolving a complex-valued disk named the Phase Coded Disk (PCD) with the image to provide three separate pieces of information about the road. The centerline and width of the road are obtained from the resultant magnitude image while the direction is determined from the corresponding phase image, thus completing the vectorized road model. All algorithms used are described and applied to two urban test sites. Completeness values of 0.88 and 0.79 and correctness values of 0.67 and 0.80 were achieved for the classification phase of the process. The vectorization of the classified results yielded RMS values of 1.56 m and 1.66 m, completeness values of 0.84 and 0.81 and correctness values of 0.75 and 0.80 for two different data sets. [Termes IGN] ruissellementRésumé : (Auteur) Rainfall interception by vegetation is an important factor in the water balance. Consequently, rainfall interception should also be an important factor in models simulating processes such as evaporation, transpiration, surface runoff, soil erosion, and crop growth. In practice, however, it is difficult to make quantitative assessments of the spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall interception loss at the catchment level, for instance, and to make these values available as model input. In this paper, we present a novel method using earth observation images to estimate local quantitative values of rainfall interception loss. Leaf Area Index (LAI) and fractional vegetation cover per grid cell are important process variables for rainfall interception. These two variables are estimated from images using spectral vegetation indices and using spectral mixture analysis, respectively. Relations between canopy storage capacity and LAI exist for several plant species and vegetation types, but limited data are found on crops, and more research is needed in this field. The new method is explained and illustrated for a study area in southern France with a variety of land-cover types. It is found to be a valuable and practical approach to quantitatively assess spatial patterns of interception loss for given rainfall events. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) This paper compares several stereo image interest point detectors with respect to their repeatability and information content through experimental analysis. The Harris-Laplace detector gives better results than other detectors in areas of good texture; however, in areas of poor texture, the Harris-Laplace detector may be not the best choice. A feature-related filtering strategy is designed for the Harris-Laplace detector (as well as the standard Harris detector) to improve the repeatability and information content for imagery with both good and poor texture: (a) the local information entropy is computed to describe the local feature of the image; and (b) the redundant interest points are filtered according to the interest strength and the local information entropy. After the filtering process, the repeatability and information content of the final interest points are improved, and the mismatching then can be reduced. This conclusion is supported by experimental analysis with actual stereo images.
