[Termes IGN] toundraRésumé : (Auteur) The tundra–taiga transition zone stretches around the northern hemisphere separating boreal forest to the south from treeless tundra to the north. Tree cover and height are important variables to characterize this vegetation transition. Accurate continuous fields of tree cover and height would enable the delineation of the forest extent according to different criterion and provide useful data for change detection of this climatically sensitive ecotone. This study examined if multiangular remote sensing data has potential to improve the accuracy of the tree cover and height estimates in relation to nadir-view data. The satellite data consisted of Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) data at 275 m and 1.1 km resolutions. The study area was located in the Fennoscandian tundra–taiga transition zone, in northernmost Finland. The continuous fields of tree cover and height were estimated using neural networks, which were trained and assessed by high-resolution biotope inventory data. The spectral–angular data together produced lower estimation errors than single band nadir, multispectral nadir or single band multiangular data alone. RMSE of the tree cover estimates reduced from 7.8% (relative RMSE 67.4%) to 6.5% (56.1%) at 275 m resolution, and from 5.4% (49.2%) to 4.1% (36.9%) at 1.1 km resolution, when multispectral nadir data were used together with multiangular data. RMSE of the tree height estimates reduced from 2.3 m (44.3%) to 2.0 m (37.6%) and from 1.8 m (35.4%) to 1.3 m (25.4%), respectively. The largest estimation errors occurred in mires and in areas of dense shrub cover, but the use of multiangular data also reduced estimation errors in these areas. The results suggest that directional information has potential to improve the tree cover and height estimates, and hence the accuracy of the land cover change detection in the tundra–taiga transition zone. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) For monitoring environmental changes, new digital remote sensors have become available that allow monitoring and change detection analyses at resolutions and scales that were deemed impossible just a few years ago. The advent of airborne stereo scanners of ultra high spatial resolution offers the possibility of a complete digital remote sensing processing System. Current sensors include the High-resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), the ADS-40, and the Digital Mapping Camera (DMC). For automated analysis, however, the new sensors require also new processing techniques. This paper presents results of change monitoring analyses for areas along the shorelines of the Elbe and Weser rivers in North Germany using integrated HRSC and GIS datasets. An automated procedure for highly accurate mapping was developed which is based on a hierarchical stepwise approach integrating GIS methods and digital surface information in this process. This approach allows the production of GIS maps that are more detailed and accurate than those that were previously produced by conventional means. Within the GIS environment, the multitemporal analysis also allows the exact quantification and location of changes of the protected biotope types. 'Meaningful' in that it is topologically correct, provides a basis for modelling flow and differentiates between different types of water features. In Great Britain, large-scale digital mapping of hydrological features was captured from paper maps and had a cartographic emphasis that had poor attribution, and no underlying model that supported geographical modelling. This emphasis gave rise to rivers and lakes that were variously 'broken' into sections by features such as dams, bridges, and culverts. This paper reports on research to create automatically a topologically connected hydrological network that underpins the detailed cartographic representation of such features. The network was created by joining these hydrographic features together according to rules of both continuity and proximity between river sections, and their flow direction (using an underlying digital elevation model). Confidence values were associated with each section link reflecting the certainty of that connection. The confidence values provided a basis for directing human intervention to uncertain connections as part of the final editing process. The project took as its input OS MasterMap 'water feature' data. A skeletonisation process was used to create the medial axis of the network. The paper reports in detail the methodology, the implementation and evaluation. The algorithm worked well in rural areas where interruptions are small and there is greater variation in height. In urban areas the challenges were greater where typically relatively long sections of river may be re-engineered and culverted, and where the fidelity of the digital elevation model was insufficient to discern the subtle changes in elevation. [Termes IGN] tessellationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes methods for detecting apparent differences between spatial tessellations at two different points in time, with the objective of conflation of spatial tessellations at multiple time points. The methods comprise three steps. First, we eliminate systematic differences between tessellations using the affine transformation. Second, we match subregions between tessellations at two points in time and match boundaries based on matching relationships between the subregions. Third, we propose a distance metric for measuring differences between the matched boundaries and a method for determining whether the measured differences are apparent or not. We apply the proposed methods to a part of the US Census data for 1990 and 2000 and empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of these methods. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) This paper introduces a multi-scale theory of piecewise image modelling, called the scale-sets theory, and which can be regarded as a region-oriented scale-space theory. The first part of the paper studies the general structure of a geometrically unbiased region-oriented multi-scale image description and introduces the scale-sets representation, a representation which allows to handle such a description exactly. The second part of the paper deals with the way scale-sets image analyses can be built according to an energy minimization principle. We consider a rather general formulation of the partitioning problem which involves minimizing a two-term-based energy, of the form λC + D, where D is a goodness-of-fit term and C is a regularization term. We describe the way such energies arise from basic principles of approximate modelling and we relate them to operational rate/distorsion problems involved in lossy compression problems. We then show that an important subset of these energies constitutes a class of multi-scale energies in that the minimal cut of a hierarchy gets coarser and coarser as parameter λ increases. This allows us to devise a fast dynamic-programming procedure to find the complete scale-sets representation of this family of minimal cuts. Considering then the construction of the hierarchy from which the minimal cuts are extracted, we end up with an exact and parameter-free algorithm to build scale-sets image descriptions whose sections constitute a monotone sequence of upward global minima of a multi-scale energy, which is called the “scale climbing” algorithm. This algorithm can be viewed as a continuation method along the scale dimension or as a minimum pursuit along the operational rate/distorsion curve. Furthermore, the solution verifies a linear scale invariance property which allows to completely postpone the tuning of the scale parameter to a subsequent stage. For computational reasons, the scale climbing algorithm is approximated by a pair-wise region merging scheme: however the principal properties of the solutions are kept. Some results obtained with Mumford-Shah’s piece-wise constant model and a variant are provided and different applications of the proposed multi-scale analyses are finally sketched.
