[Termes IGN] Socet SetRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes an in-depth usability evaluation of our ROADMAP road network extraction system. Six operators used ROADMAP in both manual and semi-automated modes, as well as BAE Systems 'SOCET SET', to extract roads in four image test areas. An in-depth statistical analysis was performed on the timing results, with the main conclusion being that the performance differences among the three systems were not statistically significant. However, the evaluation highlighted a number of factors other than intrinsic feature extraction competence that affected the results and which point to the potential for significant engineering improvements. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper introduces a new wavelet transform based method of road centerline extraction from high resolution remote sensing images. In the one dimensional case, we characterize different kinds of sudden changes of signals by comparing f the magnitudes of the local extreme values of the wavelet transforms under different dilation scales of the same wavelet. The platform-like signals, which come from cross sections of roads, can be characterized through the evolution of the wavelet transform across scales. A two-dimensional wavelet transform of an image consists of two components, each component is a one dimensional wavelet transform in one coordinate direction followed by a smoothing process in the perpendicular direction. The road edges can be characterized through the evolution of the two-dimensional wavelet transform across different scales. Edges of the main roads can then be extracted using these characterizations, and the road centerlines can be obtained by proper post-processing. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Speckle noise is always present in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Many methods that reduce speckle noise while preserving texture and detail have been presented previously. In this paper, a comparison of different methods using wavelet decomposition is performed and new improvements for traditional methods are introduced. These techniques are: Wiener filtering, classical soft threshold, a new adaptive soft threshold and Bayesian reconstruction. First, speckle noise in a SAR image was analysed statistically. Then, a simulated image following these characteristics was created in order to evaluate noise reduction. The mean squared error was classified depending on the spatial characteristics of a local region. This tool gave valuable information for algorithm assessment. In the comparison, the new adaptive soft threshold method provided excellent results concerning noise reduction and detail preservation compared with classical soft threshold and Wiener methods. In addition, it gave as much noise reduction as the most sophisticated Bayesian method, but much more efficiently. Hence, the adaptive version of soft thresholding outperformed the other techniques. This study also presents a rigorous framework for speckle noise simulation and noise reduction evaluation. [Termes IGN] métriqueRésumé : (Auteur) Spectral matching algorithms can be used for the identification of unknown spectra based on a measure of similarity with one or more known spectra. Two popular spectral matching algorithms use different error metrics and constraints to determine the existence of a spectral match. Multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA) is a linear mixing model that uses a root mean square error (RMSE) error metric. Spectral angle mapper (SAM) compares two spectra using a spectral angle error metric. This paper compares two endmember MESMA and SAM using a spectral library containing six land cover classes. RMSE and spectral angle for models within each land cover class were directly compared. The dependence of RMSE on the albedo of the modeled spectrum was also explored. RMSE and spectral angle were found to be closely related, although not equivalent, due to variations in the albedo of the modeled spectra. Error constraints applied to both models resulted in large differences in the number of spectral matches. Using MESMA, the number of spectra modeled within the error constraint increased as the albedo of the modeled spectra decreased. The value of the error constraint used was shown to make a much larger difference in the number of spectra modeled than the choice of spectral matching algorithm. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Spatially coincident land-cover information frequently varies due to technological and political variations. This is especially problematic for timeseries analyses. We present an approach using expert expressions of how the semantics of different datasets relate to integrating temporal time series landcover information where the classification classes have fundamentally changed. We use land-cover mapping in the UK (LCMGB and LCM2000) as example data sets because of the extensive object-based meta-data in the LCM2000. Inconsistencies between the two datasets can arise from random, gross and systematic error and from an actual change in land cover. Locales of possible land-cover change are inferred by comparing characterizations derived from the semantic relations and meta-data. Field visits showed errors of omission to be 21% and errors of commission to be 28%, despite the accuracy limitations of the land-cover information when compared with the field survey component of the Countryside Survey 2000.
