[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we evaluate the potential of a frequency-based contextual classifier (FBC) for landuse classification with a panchromatic Ikonos image. To capture the spatial arrangement of image graylevel values and use such information in image classification, we applied texture spectrum (TS) directly in the FBC. The effects of several data preprocessing and reduction methods on the performance of the FBC are also evaluated. The methods include four graylevel reduction (GLR) techniques and several modifications to the TS technique. The purpose of data reduction is to improve the classification efficiency of the FBC. The GLR schemes were minmax linear compression (LC), gray level binning (BN), histogram equalization (HE), and piecewise nonlinear compression (PC). Instead of using the texture measures derived from the texture spectrum, we directly applied texture spectra of various sizes in the classification. We modified the encoding algorithm in the TS and were able to reduce the number of texture units from its original 6561 to 256, 81, and 16, leading to as much as a 410 times computation efficiency. The original image and GLR images were subsequently classified with the FBC. We compared the classification accuracies and found that the GLR methods resulted in accuracies similar to that of the original image (within 0.03 kappa value). There was little difference in classification accuracy (within 0.03 kappa value) among the three modified TS methods, which were all outperformed by the original TS method. All TS methods performed considerably better than the use of the original image and the GLR methods. The texture features are derived from both individual bands and combinations of bands. We consider both spectral binning and principal components analysis for reducing the dimensionality of the input data. Using a database of Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer image regions, we evaluate the performance of this approach for recognizing hyperspectral textures. We show that opponent features that consider combinations of spectral bands often help improve performance. We also examine the dependence of recognition performance on the dimensionality reduction strategy and the number of spectral bands. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In mapping organizations, the implementation of more automation coupled with the availability of heterogeneous data requires the investigation, adaptation and evaluation of new approaches and techniques. The demand for rapid mapping operations such as database generation and updating is continuously increasing. Due to the rising use of raster data, image analysis techniques have been investigated and tested in this study to introduce automation in the assessment of scanned topographic monochrome maps and Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery for feature separation and extraction in northern Canada. The work focuses on the detection and extraction of lakes predominant features in the North as well as on to their spatiotemporal comparison. Various approaches using digital image processing techniques were implemented and evaluated. Thresholding and texture measures were used to evaluate the potential of rapid extraction of certain topographic elements from scanned monochrome maps of northern Canada. A raster to vector approach (R> V) followed for the vectorization of these extracted features. The extraction of features from Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery involved image and theme enhancement by applying various image fusion and spectral transformations (e.g., Brovey, PC1IMGFUSE, intensity hue saturation (IHS), principal component analysis (PCA), Tasseled Cap, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)), followed by image classification and thresholding. Tests showed that the approaches were more or less featuredependent, while, at the same time, they can augment and significantly enhance the conventional topographic mapping methods. Following the analysis of the map and image data, change detection between two lake datasets was performed both interactively and in an automated mode based on the nonintersection of old and new features. The various approaches and methodology developed and implemented within a GIS environment along with examples, results and limitations are presented and discussed. These are also compared against a benchmark approach : the GrayLevel Cooccurrence Matrix. The three methods and their implementation are briefly described. Three series of experiments have been prepared to test the performance of these methods in various classification contexts. These contexts are simulated by vaiying the number, type and visual likeness of the texture patches used in classification tests. More specifically, their ability to correctly classify, separate, and associate texture patches is assessed. Results suggest that the classification context has an important impact on performance rates of all methods. The variogram-based and the GrayTone Dependency Matrix methods were generally superior, each one in particular contexts. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) A new multiparameter and multiscale (MPMS) feature set derived from fractional Brownian motion (fBm) is presented in this paper. Generally, natural textures can be modeled as fBm processes. Because fBm is characterized by a single Hurst parameter, it is not flexible enough to be used as the texture feature in classification. Therefore, an extended model is proposed, where the Hurst parameter H is no longer constant for all the scales. The shape and location of the estimation curve, when presented graphically, are fixed for a particular texture. We use the slopes of sections of the estimation curve to estimate the multiscale Hurst parameters. Meanwhile, the unit displacement incremental power (UDIP) a' is also taken as the parameter of the process. It determines the vertical placement of the curve in the graph. Experiments prove that the MPMS feature set has advantages over some other features in the classification of SPOT images.
