[Termes IGN] précision des donnéesRésumé : (auteur) The active contour model (ACM) is widely used in target detection of optical and medical images, but multiplicative speckle noise largely interferes with its use in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. To overcome this difficulty, a region- and edge-based convex ACM with high efficiency is proposed for target detection in small-scale SAR images. Then, a novel detection algorithm, which combines the advantages of a multiscale saliency detection method and the proposed high-efficiency ACM, is presented to address a large-scale and high-resolution SAR image automatically. Target detection experiments in real and simulated SAR images show that the proposed methods outperform classical ACMs and the popular two-parameter constant false alarm rate detector in terms of efficiency and accuracy. [Termes IGN] séparateur à vaste margeRésumé : (auteur) Designing a kernel function with good discriminating ability and a highly application-adaptive kernelized classifier is the key of many kernel methods. However, not many kernel functions combining directly the bitemporal images' information are designed specifically for change detection tasks. In addition, extreme learning machine (ELM) has not found wide applications in change detection tasks, even though it is a potential kernel method possessing outstanding approximation and generalization capabilities as well as great classification accuracy and efficiency. Therefore, an approach relying on a difference correlation kernel (DCK) and a multistage ELM (MS-ELM) is proposed in this paper for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image change detection. First, a DCK function is constructed specifically for change detection by measuring the “distance” between any two pixels. The DCK function depicts the cross-time similarities between couples of bitemporal image patches at any cyclic shifts with a kernel correlation operation and the high-order spatial distances between two differently located pixels with an algebraic subtraction. The DCK function possesses strong noise immunity and good identification of changed areas simultaneously. Second, an MS-ELM classifier is constructed for obtaining the change detection result. In MS-ELM, the hidden nodes and weights between the hidden and output layers are updated stage by stage by improving the kernel functions that compose them. Each stage of the MS-ELM is a standard kernel-ELM, and the DCK function is utilized in the first stage. The regenerative kernel functions incorporate the output spatial-neighborhood information of the previous stage for enhancing remarkably the MS-ELM's discriminating ability and noise resistance. The converged result at the last stage of MS-ELM is the final change detection result. Experiments on real SAR image change detection demonstrate the effectiveness of the DCK function and the MS-ELM algorithm, particularly its good identification of changed areas and strong robustness against noise in SAR images. [Termes IGN] niveau d'analyseRésumé : (Auteur) A new approach to locating accuracy assessment sample units was used to quantify 2010 land cover accuracy, in addition to being able to make statements about 2006-2010 land cover change mapping accuracy for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) data. Three customized tiers of sampling strata were created, as discussed, to meet these goals. Stratified random sampling was employed in each stratum with a six out of nine pixel-homogeneity criteria (different from the final minimum mapping unit) required for each sampling unit. Accuracy was assessed for nine regions in the coastal United States with overall accuracy ranging from 82.3 percent to 85.6 percent. Binary change was mapped with 88.7 percent accuracy, with the largest error being errors of commission (71.2 percent user accuracy). This sampling design also allowed for the identification of 137 locations where true change was not mapped, allowing for statements to be made about missed change. [Termes IGN] Equateur (état)Résumé : (Auteur) Geophysics experts are interested in understanding the behavior of volcanoes and forecasting possible eruptions by monitoring and detecting the increment on volcano-seismic activity, with the aim of safeguarding human lives and material losses. This paper presents an automatic volcanic event detection and classification system, which considers feature extraction and feature selection stages, to reduce the processing time toward a reliable real-time volcano early warning system (RT-VEWS). We built the proposed approach in terms of the seismicity presented in 2009 and 2010 at the Cotopaxi Volcano located in Ecuador. In the detection stage, the recordings were time segmented by using a nonoverlapping 15-s window, and in the classification stage, the detected seismic signals were 1-min long. For each detected signal conveying seismic events, a comprehensive set of statistical, temporal, spectral, and scale-domain features were compiled and extracted, aiming to separate long-period (LP) events from volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes. We benchmarked two commonly used types of feature selection techniques, namely, wrapper (recursive feature extraction) and embedded (cross-validation and pruning). Each technique was used within a suitable and appropriate classification algorithm, either the support vector machine (SVM) or the decision trees. The best result was obtained by using the SVM classifier, yielding up to 99% accuracy in the detection stage and 97% accuracy and sensitivity in the event classification stage. Selected features and their interpretation were consistent among different input spaces in simple terms of the spectral content of the frequency bands at 3.1 and 6.8 Hz. A comparative analysis showed that the most relevant features for automatic discrimination between LP and VT events were one in the time domain, five in the frequency domain, and nine in the scale domain. Our study provides the framework for an event classification system with high accuracy and reduced computational requirements, according to the orientation toward a future RT-VEWS. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Change detection based on multi-temporal SAR images is a fundamental process in many practical applications. Popular SAR change detectors include ratio and logarithmic-ratio (log-ratio) operators, and those based on a statistical similarity between temporal images. The ratio and log-ratio operators are not ideal for polarimetric SAR (POLSAR) images, as only the intensity or amplitude information is used. Change detectors based on similarity comparison of probability distribution functions are difficult to implement and not reliable because of the uncertainties in estimating distribution parameters. Our research aims to find a reliable and computationally simple change detector from among three typical polarimetric distance measures. The change detection potential and abilities of these distance measures are analyzed from a mathematical point of view, and then compared through a test dataset composed of two RADARSAT-2 fine-quad polarized images. The symmetric revised Wishart (SRW) distance, originally developed for image segmentation, is found to be an effective change detector. Based on the test data, the change map derived from the SRW distance achieves 93.24 percent change rate and 5.67 percent false alarm rate. Furthermore, the eigendecompostion of the SRW distance is given for the first time, which uncovers the linkage of the SRW distance with the scattering mechanisms and the corresponding amplitudes embedded in two polarimetric covariance matrices, forming a theoretical explanation for the superiority of the SRW distance as a change detector. Our research indicates the general applicability of the SRW distance for POLSAR change detection.
