This erosion could increase due to climate change leading to potential threats for coastal users, assets, or infrastructure. Thus, it is important to be able to understand and characterize cliff face changes at fine scale. Usually, monitoring is conducted thanks to distance computation and manual analysis of each cliff face over 3D point clouds to be able to study 3D dynamics of cliffs. This is time consuming and inclined to each one judgment in particular when dealing with 3D point clouds data. Indeed, 3D point clouds characteristics (sparsity, impossibility of working on a classical top view representation, volume of data, …) make their processing harder than 2D images. Last decades, an increase of performance of machine learning methods for earth observation purposes has been performed. To the best of our knowledge, deep learning has never been used for 3D change detection and categorization in coastal cliffs. Lately, Siamese KPConv brings successful results for change detection and categorization into 3D point clouds in urban area. Although the case study is different by its more random characteristics and its complex geometry, we demonstrate here that this method also allows to extract and categorize changes on coastal cliff face. Results over the study area of Petit Ailly cliffs in Varengeville-sur-Mer (France) are very promising qualitatively as well as quantitatively: erosion is retrieved with an intersection over union score of 83.86 %. [Termes IGN] Tyrol (Autriche)Résumé : (autuer) Virtual laser scanning (VLS) allows the generation of realistic point cloud data at a fraction of the costs required for real acquisitions. It also allows carrying out experiments that would not be feasible or even impossible in the real world, e.g., due to time constraints or when hardware does not exist. A critical part of a simulation is an adequate substitution of reality. In the case of VLS, this concerns the scanner, the laser-object interaction, and the scene. In this contribution, we present a method to recreate a realistic dynamic scene, where the surface changes over time. We first apply change detection and quantification on a real dataset of an erosion-affected high-mountain slope in Tyrol, Austria, acquired with permanent terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). Then, we model and extract the time series of a single change form, and transfer it to a virtual model scene. The benefit of such a transfer is that no physical modelling of the change processes is required. In our example, we use a Kalman filter with subsequent clustering to extract a set of erosion rills from a time series of high-resolution TLS data. The change magnitudes quantified at the locations of these rills are then transferred to a triangular mesh, representing the virtual scene. Subsequently, we apply VLS to investigate the detectability of such erosion rills from airborne laser scanning at multiple subsequent points in time. This enables us to test if, e.g., a certain flying altitude is appropriate in a disaster response setting for the detection of areas exposed to immediate danger. To ensure a successful transfer, the spatial resolution and the accuracy of the input dataset are much higher than the accuracy and resolution that are being simulated. Furthermore, the investigated change form is detected as significant in the input data. We, therefore, conclude the model of the dynamic scene derived from real TLS data to be an appropriate substitution for reality. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) It is hard for current time series reconstruction methods to achieve the balance of high-precision time series reconstruction and explanation of the model mechanism. The goal of this paper is to improve the reconstruction accuracy with a well-explained time series model. Thus, we developed a function-based model, the CCTM (Continuous Change Tracker Model) model, that can achieve high precision in time series reconstruction by tracking the time series variation rate. The goal of this paper is to provide a new solution for high-precision time series reconstruction and related applications. To test the reconstruction effects, the model was applied to four types of datasets: normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), gross primary productivity (GPP), leaf area index (LAI), and MODIS surface reflectance (MSR). Several new observations are as follows. First, the CCTM model is well explained and based on the second-order derivative theorem, which divides the yearly time series into four variation types including uniform variations, decelerated variations, accelerated variations, and short-periodical variations, and each variation type is represented by a designed function. Second, the CCTM model provides much better reconstruction results than the Harmonic model on the NDVI, GPP, MSR, and LAI datasets for the seasonal segment reconstruction. The combined use of the Savitzky–Golay filter and the CCTM model is better than the combinations of the Savitzky–Golay filter with other models. Third, the Harmonic model has the best trend-fitting ability on the yearly time series dataset, with the highest R-Square and the lowest RMSE among the four function fitting models. However, with seasonal piecewise fitting, the four models all achieved high accuracy, and the CCTM performs the best. Fourth, the CCTM model should also be applied to time series image compression, two compression patterns with 24 coefficients and 6 coefficients respectively are proposed. The daily MSR dataset can achieve a compression ratio of 15 by using the 6-coefficients method. Finally, the CCTM model also has the potential to be applied to change detection, trend analysis, and phenology and seasonal characteristics extractions. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) Two months after the hurricanes Irma and Maria hit Barbuda, the construction of a new international airport led to accusations of degrading the Codrington Lagoon National Park and contravening the conventions of the Ramsar Program. Scientists have analyzed the aftermath with respect to historical legacies, disaster capitalism, manifestation of climate injustices and green gentrification. The main objective of this study was to quantify and allocate land use and land cover change (LULCC) in Barbuda before and after the 2017 Hurricane disasters. Remote sensing data and volunteered geographic information were analyzed to detect the potential changes in natural LULC so that human activities and the emergence of artificial surfaces could be detected. Human-induced LULCC occurred at different sites on the island, with decreased activities in Codrington, but increased and continued activities at Coco and Palmetto Points. With an accuracy of 97.1 %, we estimated a total increase of vegetated areas by 6.56 km2, and a simultaneous slight increase in roads and buildings with a total length of 249.67 km and a total area of 1.43 km2. The vegetation condition itself depict a steady decrease since 2017. New hotspots of human activity emerged on the island in the Codrington Lagoon National Park. [Termes IGN] superpixelRésumé : (auteur) Graph-based methods are promising approaches for traditional and modern techniques in change detection (CD) applications. Nonetheless, some graph-based approaches omit the existence of useful priors that account for the structure of a scene, and the inter- and intra-relationships between the pixels are analyzed. To address this issue, in this article, we propose a framework for CD based on graph fusion and driven by graph signal smoothness representation. In addition to modifying the graph learning stage, in the proposed model, we apply a Gaussian mixture model for superpixel segmentation (GMMSP) as a downsampling module to reduce the computational cost required to learn the graph of the entire images. We carry out tests on 14 real cases of natural disasters, farming, and construction. The dataset contains homogeneous cases with multispectral (MS) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, along with heterogeneous cases that include MS/SAR images. We compare our approach against probabilistic thresholding, unsupervised learning, deep learning, and graph-based methods. In terms of Cohen’s kappa coefficient, our proposed model based on graph signal smoothness representation outperformed state-of-the-art approaches in ten out of 14 datasets.
