[Termes IGN] prévention des risquesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a sub-pixel thermal anomaly detection method based on predicting background pixel intensities using a non-linear function of a plurality of past images of the inspected scene. At present, the multitemporal approach to thermal anomaly detection is in its early development stage. In case of space-borne surveillance the multitemporal detection is complicated by both spatial and temporal variability of background surface properties, weather influences, viewing geometries, sensor noise, residual misregistration, and other factors. We use the problem of fire detection and the MODIS data to demonstrate that advanced multitemporal detection methods can potentially outperform the operationally used optimized contextual algorithms both under morning and evening conditions. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) The research reported in this paper focuses on integrating analytical and visual methods in order to explore complex patterns in geo-related multivariate data sets and to understand the changes in patterns over time. The goal is to provide techniques that are able to analyse real-world Data Warehouses, a typical architecture to manage such geo-related multidimensional data sets, in order to support the analyst's decision-making process. Challenges arise because real-world applications usually have to deal with millions of records, with dozens of dimensions, and spatio-temporal context. Therefore, a tight integration of automated analysis and interactive visualizations is needed (as proposed in the context of Visual Analytics). Our approach uses the well-studied capabilities provided by Data Warehouses supporting knowledge discovery and decision-making to analyse spatio-temporal behaviour of pattern in high-dimensional spaces. The topic of the paper is to show possible interplays between automated analysis and geo-spatial visualization. [Termes IGN] surveillance hydrologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a complete framework to support the monitoring of natural and man-made disasters by means of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The fractal geometry is the most appropriate mathematical instrument in describing the irregularity of a natural observed scene, by means of few effective and reliable parameters. Therefore, fractal concepts can be used to model and identify geometrical changes that occurred in areas hit by disasters. We present an overall framework employing fractal-based models, algorithms, and tools to support the identification of natural area changes due to natural or man-made disasters. Such a framework includes an algorithm used to extract fractal parameters from a 2-D signal, a fractal interpolation tool, and a SAR raw-signal simulator. The combined use of these tools provides an innovative instrument for disaster monitoring applications. In this paper, we implement the fractal framework to obtain a relation between the fractal parameters of a SAR image and those of the relative imaged area. In addition, a case study is discussed, showing the potentiality of our framework for flooding detection. [Termes IGN] pixelRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a new similarity measure for automatic change detection in multitemporal synthetic aperture radar images. This measure is based on the evolution of the local statistics of the image between two dates. The local statistics are estimated by using a cumulant-based series expansion, which approximates probability density functions in the neighborhood of each pixel in the image. The degree of evolution of the local statistics is measured using the Kullback-Leibler divergence. An analytical expression for this detector is given, allowing a simple computation which depends on the four first statistical moments of the pixels inside the analysis window only. The proposed change indicator is compared to the classical mean ratio detector and also to other model-based approaches. Tests on the simulated and real data show that our detector outperforms all the others. The fast computation of the proposed detector allows a multiscale approach in the change detection for operational use. The so-called multiscale change profile (MCP) is introduced to yield change information on a wide range of scales and to better characterize the appropriate scale. Two simple yet useful examples of applications show that the MCP allows the design of change indicators, which provide better results than a monoscale analysis. [Termes IGN] image Landsat-TMRésumé : (Auteur) Four atmospheric correction methods, two relative and two absolute, were compared in this study. Two of the methods (PIF and RCS) were relative approaches; COST is an absolute image-based method and 6S, an absolute modeling method. The methods were applied to the hazy bands 1 through 4 of a Landsat TM scene of the year 1997, which was being used in a change detection project. The effects of corrections were studied in woodland patches. Three criteria, namely (a) image attributes; (b) image classification results, and (c) landscape metrics, were used for comparing the performance of the correction methods. Average pixel values, dynamic range, and coefficient of variation of bands constituted the first criterion, the area of detected vegetation through image classification was the second criterion, and patch and landscape measures of vegetation the third criterion. Overall, the COST, RCS, and 6S methods performed better than PIF and showed more stable results. The 6S method produced some negative values in bands 2 through 4 due to the unavailability of some data needed in the model. Having to use only a single set of image pixels for normalization in the PIF method and the difficulty of selecting such samples in the study area may be the reasons for its poor performance.
