[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) For monitoring environmental changes, new digital remote sensors have become available that allow monitoring and change detection analyses at resolutions and scales that were deemed impossible just a few years ago. The advent of airborne stereo scanners of ultra high spatial resolution offers the possibility of a complete digital remote sensing processing System. Current sensors include the High-resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), the ADS-40, and the Digital Mapping Camera (DMC). For automated analysis, however, the new sensors require also new processing techniques. This paper presents results of change monitoring analyses for areas along the shorelines of the Elbe and Weser rivers in North Germany using integrated HRSC and GIS datasets. An automated procedure for highly accurate mapping was developed which is based on a hierarchical stepwise approach integrating GIS methods and digital surface information in this process. This approach allows the production of GIS maps that are more detailed and accurate than those that were previously produced by conventional means. Within the GIS environment, the multitemporal analysis also allows the exact quantification and location of changes of the protected biotope types. [Termes IGN] tessellationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes methods for detecting apparent differences between spatial tessellations at two different points in time, with the objective of conflation of spatial tessellations at multiple time points. The methods comprise three steps. First, we eliminate systematic differences between tessellations using the affine transformation. Second, we match subregions between tessellations at two points in time and match boundaries based on matching relationships between the subregions. Third, we propose a distance metric for measuring differences between the matched boundaries and a method for determining whether the measured differences are apparent or not. We apply the proposed methods to a part of the US Census data for 1990 and 2000 and empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of these methods. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) The soil moisture experiments held during June-July 2002 (SMEX02) at lowa demonstrated the potential of the L-band radiometer (PALS) in estimation of near surface soil moisture under dense vegetation canopy conditions. The L-band radar was also shown to be sensitive to near surface soil moisture. However, the spatial resolution of a typical satellite L-band radiometer is of the order of tens of kilometers, which is not sufficient to serve the full range of science needs for land surface hydrology and weather modeling applications. Disaggregation schemes for deriving subpixel estimates of soil moisture from radiometer data using higher resolution radar observations may provide the means for making available global soil moisture observations at a much finer scale. This paper presents a simple approach for estimation of change in soil moisture at a higher (radar) spatial resolution by combining L-band copolarized radar backscattering coefficients and L-band radiometric brightness temperatures. Sensitivity of AIRSAR L-band copolarized channels has been demonstrated by comparison with in situ soil moisture measurements as well as PALS brightness temperatures. The change estimation algorithm has been applied to coincident PALS and AIRSAR datasets acquired during the SMEX02 campaign. Using AIRSAR data aggregated to a 100-m resolution, PALS radiometer estimates of soil moisture change at a 400-m resolution have been disaggregated to 100-m resolution. The effect of surface roughness variability on the change estimation algorithm has been explained using integral equation model (IEM) simulations. A simulation experiment using synthetic data has been performed to analyze the performance of the algorithm over a region undergoing gradual wetting and dry down. [Termes IGN] organisme cartographique nationalRésumé : (Auteur) Topographic mapping from remotely sensed imagery is carried out all over the world, using data from an ever-growing number of sensors. Traditional film cameras are gradually being replaced by digital cameras and scanners, but most topographic mapping still relies on sensors based on airborne platforms. This paper examines the potential of high resolution satellite sensor imagery for the updating of topographic mapping, from the perspective of a national mapping agency. After a review of satellites capable of being used for this purpose, several examples of mapping projects are presented. The paper ends with a look to the future, and asks whether satellite imagery can ever replace airborne (digital or analogue) photography for the makers of maps. It is concluded that high resolution satellite sensor imagery does have a role to play in the update of topographic mapping, especially in the detection of change. [Termes IGN] photo-interprétation assistée par ordinateurRésumé : (Auteur) An approach and strategy for automatic detection of buildings from aerial images using combined image analysis and interpretation techniques is described in this paper. It is undertaken in several steps. A dense DSM is obtained by stereo image matching and then the results of multi-band classification, the DSM, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (ndvi) are used to reveal preliminary building interest areas. From these areas, a shape modeling algorithm has been used to precisely delineate their boundaries. The Dempster-Shafer data fusion technique is then applied to detect buildings from the combination of three data sources by a statistically-based classification. A number of test areas, which include buildings of different sizes, shape, and roof color have been investigated. The tests are encouraging and demonstrate that all processes in this system are important for effective building detection.
