[Termes IGN] Pinus (genre)Résumé : (Auteur) Responding to an increasing interest in studying vegetation changes over time, we review current methods of processing black and white digital aerial photographs in order to classify tree cover in pinyon-juniper woodlands. Besides applying commonly used clustering and supervised maxim likelihood methods, we have developed a new classifier, nearest edge thresholding, which is unsupervised and based on the principals of edge detection and density slicing. Comparison of the three methods' abilities to predict field values at plot scales of 100 m2 to 900 m2 shows this new method is better or comparable to others at all scales, can be easily applied to digital imagery, and has high correspondence with ground-truthed field values of tree cover. [Termes IGN] laisseRésumé : (Auteur) Determination of the ordinary high water line (OHWL) has been and continues to be an important issue for the State of Florida and elsewhere. The OHWL defines the separation of sovereignty lands of the State and private ownership on non-tidal water bodies. We used imagery from multiple sources to determine if (1) the water's edge can be detected around the lake margins and (2) vegetation community shifts can be reliably detected and correlated with OHWL. It was determined that in areas where water is known to be under vegetation canopy or in heavily vegetated marsh there were no distinct indicators of the OHWL on any of the remote sensing images used. This is because overhanging vegetation and emergent macrophytes both obscure the water's edge. We also found that vegetation types varied widely and none appeared to be precise indicators of the OHWL Most of the plant species in the vicinity of the known location of the OHWL were not classified in any one wetland designation and many were found both in wetland and upland areas and, therefore, provided no distinct characteristics that could be consistently identified or mapped in ArcView using remote sensing images. [Termes IGN] réduction géométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a new nonparametric feature extraction method is proposed for high-dimensional multiclass pattern recognition problems. It is based on a nonparametric extension of scatter matrices. There are at least two advantages to using the proposed nonparametric scatter matrices. First, they are generally of full rank. This provides the ability to specify the number of extracted features desired and to reduce the effect of the singularity problem. This is in contrast to parametric discriminant analysis, which usually only can extract L - 1 (number of classes minus one) features. In a real situation, this may not be enough. Second, the nonparametric nature of scatter matrices reduces the effects of outliers and works well even for nonnormal datasets. The new method provides greater weight to samples near the expected decision boundary. This tends to provide for increased classification accuracy. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) We introduce a set of measures based on straight lines to assess land development levels in high-resolution (1 m) panchromatic satellite images. Most urban areas locally (such as in a 400 x 400 M2 area) exhibit a preponderance of straight-line features, generally appearing in fairly simple quasi-periodic organizations. Wilderness and rural areas produce line structures in more random spatial arrangements. We use this observation to perform an initial triage on the image to restrict the attention of subsequent more computationally intensive analyses. Statistical measures based on straight lines guide the analysis. We base these measures on length, contrast, orientation, periodicity, and location. On these, we trained and tested parametric and nonparametric classifiers. These tests were for a two-class problem (urban versus rural). However, because our ultimate goal is to extract residential regions, we then extended these ideas to address the detection of suburban regions. To do so, some use of spatial coherence is required; suburban regions are especially difficult to detect. Therefore, we introduce a decision system to perform suburban region classification via an overlapping voting method for consensus discovery. Our data were taken from regions all around the world, which underscores the robustness of our approach. Based on extensive testing, we can report very promising results in distinguishing developed areas.
