This work presents a supervised adaptive object recognition model which integrates scale-space filtering techniques for feature extraction within a Multilayer Perceptron neural network and the back-propagation learning task of the search of the most adequate filter parameters. The experimental evaluation of the method has been conducted in an easily controlled domain using synthetic imagery, and in the real domain coping with object recognition in high-resolution remote sensing imagery. To investigate whether the strategy can be considered an alternative to conventional procedures the results were compared with those obtained by a well known contextual classification scheme. [Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present some improvements to urban area characterization by means of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images using multitemporal and multiangle datasets. The first aim of this research is to show that a temporal sequence of satellite SAR data may improve the classification accuracy and the discriminability of land cover classes in an urban area. Similarly, a second point worth discussing is to what extent multiangle SAR data allows extracting complementary urban features, exploiting different acquisition geometries. To these aims, in this paper, we show results on the same urban test site (Pavia, northern Italy), referring to a sequence of European Remote Sensing Satellite 1/2 (ERS1/2) Cband images and to a set of simulated Xband data with a finer spatial resolution and different viewing angles. In particular, the multitemporal data is analyzed by means of a novel procedure based on a neurofuzzy classifier whose input is a subset of the ERS sequence chosen using the histogram distance index. Instead, the multiangle dataset is used to provide a better characterization of the road network in the area, overcoming effects due to the orientation of the SAR sensor. [Termes IGN] virageRésumé : (Auteur) The paper presents an approach for roads detection based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images and road database The vectors provided by the database are refined using active contours (snakes). In this framework, we firstly develop a restoration filter based on the frost filter achieving an acceptable compromise between speckle elimination and lines preserving. This is followed by a line plausibility calculation step which is used to deform the snake from its initial location toward the final solution. The snake is reformulated using finite elements method. The setting of the snake parameters is not an obvious problem especially when they are tuned by trialanderror process. We propose a new automatic computational rule for the snake parameters. Our approach is validated by a series of tests on synthetic and SAR images. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) This paper deals with the automatic extraction of building outlines using a pair of optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The aim is to define areas of interest for building height reconstruction in radargrammetric or interferometric applications. Since high resolution optical satellite images are now easily available, such methods merging SAR and optical information could be useful to improve 3D SAR reconstruction (the optical image giving only information on the scene organization). Both SAR and optical data bring complementary information about the building presence and shape. The proposed method is divided into two main steps : first, extraction of partial potential building footprints on the SAR image, and then shape detection on the optical one using the previously extracted primitives (lines). Two methods of shape detection have been developed, the simplest one finding the "best" rectangular shape and the second one searching for a more complicated shape in case of failure of the first one. Results for an industrial area acquired with two incidence angles for the SAR image are presented and analyzed. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In mapping organizations, the implementation of more automation coupled with the availability of heterogeneous data requires the investigation, adaptation and evaluation of new approaches and techniques. The demand for rapid mapping operations such as database generation and updating is continuously increasing. Due to the rising use of raster data, image analysis techniques have been investigated and tested in this study to introduce automation in the assessment of scanned topographic monochrome maps and Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery for feature separation and extraction in northern Canada. The work focuses on the detection and extraction of lakes predominant features in the North as well as on to their spatiotemporal comparison. Various approaches using digital image processing techniques were implemented and evaluated. Thresholding and texture measures were used to evaluate the potential of rapid extraction of certain topographic elements from scanned monochrome maps of northern Canada. A raster to vector approach (R> V) followed for the vectorization of these extracted features. The extraction of features from Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery involved image and theme enhancement by applying various image fusion and spectral transformations (e.g., Brovey, PC1IMGFUSE, intensity hue saturation (IHS), principal component analysis (PCA), Tasseled Cap, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)), followed by image classification and thresholding. Tests showed that the approaches were more or less featuredependent, while, at the same time, they can augment and significantly enhance the conventional topographic mapping methods. Following the analysis of the map and image data, change detection between two lake datasets was performed both interactively and in an automated mode based on the nonintersection of old and new features. The various approaches and methodology developed and implemented within a GIS environment along with examples, results and limitations are presented and discussed.
