[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Flood extent maps that are derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images provide spatially distributed data for validating hydraulic models of river flood flow. The accuracy of such maps is reduced by a number of factors, including variation in backscatter from the different land cover types that are adjacent to the flood, changes in returns from the water surface that are caused by different meteorological conditions, and the presence of emergent vegetation. This paper describes how improved accuracy can be achieved by modifying an existing flood extent delineation algorithm to use airborne laser altimetry [light detection and ranging (lidar)] as well as SAR data. The lidar data provide an additional constraint that water line heights should vary smoothly along the flooded reach. The method was tested on a SAR image of a flood for which contemporaneous aerial photography existed, together with lidar data of the un flooded reach. The water line heights of the SAR flood extent that was conditioned on both SAR and lidar data matched the corresponding heights from the aerial photograph water line significantly more closely than those from the SAR flood extent that was conditioned only on SAR data. For water line heights in areas of low slope and vegetation, the root-mean-square error on the height differences reduced from 221.1 cm for the latter case to 55.5 cm for the former. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a method to despeckle Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image, and then extract geographical features in it. In this research work, speckle is reduced by multiscale analysis in wavelet domain. In terms of geographical feature preservation the result shows that the method is better compared to spatial domain filters, such as Lee, Kuan, Frost, Ehfrost, Median, Gamma filters. The geographical features such as roads, airport runways, rivers and other ribbon-like shape structures are detected by the new wavelet-based method as proposed by Yuan Yan Tang. Experimental results show that the proposed method extracts geographical features of different width as well as different gray levels. [Termes IGN] primitive géométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) Extracting roads from satellite images is an important task in both research and practice. This work presents an improved model for road detection based on the principles of perceptual organization and classification fusion in human vision system (HVS). The model consists of four levels: pixels, primitives, structures and objects, and two additional sub-processes: automatic classification of road scenes and global integration of multiform roads. Based on the model, a novel algorithm for detecting roads from satellite images is also proposed, in which two types of road primitives, namely blob-like primitive and line-like primitive are defined, measured, extracted and linked using different methods for dissimilar road scenes. A hierarchical search strategy driven by saliency measurement is adopted in both linking processes. The blob primitives are linked using heuristic grouping and the line primitives are connected through genetic algorithm (GA) evolution. Finally, all of the linked road segments are normalized with centre-main lines and integrated into global smooth road curves through tensor voting. Experimental results show that the algorithm is capable of detecting multiform roads from real satellite images with high adaptability and reliability. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Automatic road centerline extraction from high-resolution satellite imagery has gained considerable interest recently due to the increasing availability of commercial high-resolution satellite images. In this paper, a hierarchical grouping strategy is proposed to automatically extract main road centerlines from high-resolution satellite imagery. Here hierarchical grouping means that, instead of grouping all segments at once, the selective segments are grouped gradually, and multiple clues are closely integrated into the procedure. By this means, the computational cost can be reduced significantly. Through the stepwise grouping, the detected fragmented line segments eventually form the long main road lines. The proposed method has been tested and validated using several Ikonos and QuickBird images both in open areas and build-up urban environments. The results demonstrate its robustness and viability on extracting salient main road centerlines. [Termes IGN] sous ensemble flouRésumé : (Auteur) Fuzzy set theory has been suggested as a means for representing vague spatial phenomena, and is widely known for directly addressing some of the issues of vagueness such as the sorites paradox. Higher order vagueness is widely considered a necessary component of any theory of vagueness, but it is not so well known that it too is competently modelled by Type n Fuzzy sets. In this paper we explore the fuzzy representation of higher order vagueness with respect to spatial phenomena. Initially we relate the arguments on philosophical vagueness to Type n Fuzzy sets. As an example, we move on to an empirical generation of spatial Type 2 Fuzzy sets examining the spatial extent of mountain peaks in Scotland. We show that the Type 2 Fuzzy sets can be populated by using alternative parameterisations of a peak detection algorithm. Further ambiguities could also be explored using other parameters of this and other algorithms. We show some novel answers to interrogations of the mountain peaks of Scotland. The conclusion of this work is that higher order vagueness can be populated for Type 2 and higher fuzzy sets. It does not follow that it is always necessary to examine these higher order uncertainties, but a possible advantage in terms of the results of spatial inquiry is demonstrated.
