[Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we derive two techniques for the classification of Multifrequency/multitemporal polarimetric SAR images, based respectively on a statistical and on a neural approach. Both techniques are especially designed to exploit the spatial structure of the observed scene, thus allowing more stable classification results. Such techniques are useful when looking at medium - to - scale features, like the boundaries between urban and non-urban areas. They are applied to a set of SIR-C images of a urban area, to test their effectiveness in the identification of the different classes that compose the observed scene. A lower and an upper bound to the classification performance are introduced to characterise their limits. They correspond respectively to pixel-by-pixel classification and to the joint classification of the pixels belonging to the different classes identified in the ground truth. The results achieved with the two approaches are quantitatively analysed by comparing them to the ground truth. Moreover, a hybrid approach is presented, where the homogeneous regions identified through statistical segmentation are classified using a neuro-fuzzy technique. Finally, a quantitative analysis of the results achieved with all the proposed techniques is carried out, showing that their classification performance is much higher than the lower bound and reasonably close to the upper bound. This is a consequence of their effectiveness in the exploitation of the spatial information. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Wavelet thresholding is used to generate simplified terrain models. This nonlinear filtering technique is adaptive in the sense that the large wavelet coefficients in areas of high relief are kept, whereas all coefficients smaller than a threshold value, representing smooth areas, are thrown away. The degree of detail in the simplified model is controlled by the number of wavelet coefficients retained. Two different areas are analysed using this method. The experiments show the smoothing effect of the thresholding, and how the main terrain features survive as the threshold value increases. At large threshold values the method introduces blocking artifacts in the model. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Recent advances in digital airborne sensors and satellite platforms make spatially accurate, high-resolution multispectral imagery readily available. These advances provide the opportunity for a host of new applications to address and solve problems. High-resolution imagery is particularly well suited to urban applications. Previous data sources (such as Landsat TM) did not show the spatial detail necessary to provide many urban planning solutions. This paper provides an overview of a project in which one-meter digital imagery was used to produce a map of pervious and impervious surfaces to be used by the city of Scottsdale, Arizona for storm-water estimation. The increased spatial information in one-meter or less resolution imagery strains the usefulness of image classification using traditional supervised and unsupervised spectral classification algorithms. This study assesses the accuracy of three different methods for extracting land-cover/land-use information from high-resolution imagery of urban environments : (1) combined supervised/unsupervised spectral classification, (2) raster-based spatial modeling and (3) image segmentation classification using tree analysis. A discussion of the results and relative merits of each method is included. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The automatic reconstruction of buildings for the generation of city models is of great interest for different tasks. Threedimensional information can be directly obtained from both, laser (LIDAR) and radar (InSAR) measurements. The features of both sensors are compared. The data acquisition by SAR is described, with emphasis on the special properties of the interferometric SAR principle. A segmentation approach for building reconstruction is proposed. The results show that building reconstruction is possible from InSAR, but the achievable level of detail cannot compete with LIDAR. The main source of limitation is the inherent sidelooking scene illumination of SAR, giving rise to disturbing phenomena interfering with often large parts of the scene. Geometric constraints for the location and size of such problem areas are derived. To identify areas of unreliable data in SAR images of a builtup area, corresponding elevation data are analysed. The impact of the phenomena layover, shadow and dominant scattering at building locations is considered. For this task, a hybrid elevation reference is required. The buildings and the surrounding ground are represented as CAD planes. Natural objects like trees and bushes remain in the raster representation.
