[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Timely and accurate change detection of Earth's surface features is extremely important for understanding relationships and interactions between human and natural phenomena in order to promote better decision making. Remote sensing data are primary sources extensively used for change detection in recent decades. Many change detection techniques have been developed. This paper summarizes and reviews these techniques. Previous literature has shown that image differencing, principal component analysis and post-classification comparison are the most common methods used for change detection. In recent years, spectral mixture analysis, artificial neural networks and integration of geographical information system and remote sensing data have become important techniques for change detection applications. Different change detection algorithms have their own merits and no single approach is optimal and applicable to all cases. In practice, different algorithms are often compared to find the best change detection results for a specific application. Research of change detection techniques is still an active topic and new techniques are needed to effectively use the increasingly diverse and complex remotely sensed data available or projected to be soon available from satellite and airborne sensors. This paper is a comprehensive exploration of all the major change detection approaches implemented as found in the literature. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Leaf area index (LAI) collected in a needle-leaf forest site near Ruokolahti, Finland, during a field campaign in June 14-21, 2000, WA a, used to validate Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradionieter (MODIS) LAI algorithm. The field LAI data was first related to 30-m resolution Enhanced Thermal Mapper Plus (ETM+) images using empirical methods to create a high-resolution LAI map. The analysis of empirical approaches indicates that preliminary segmentation of the image followed by empirical modeling with the resulting patches, was an effective approach to developing an LAI validation surface. Comparison of the aggregated high-resolution LAI map and corresponding MODIS LAI retrievals suggests satisfactory behavior of the MODIS LAI algorithm although variation in MODIS LAI product is higher than expected. The MODIS algorithm, adjusted to high resolution, generally overestimates the LAI due to the influence of the understory vegetation. This indicates the need for improvements in the algorithm. An improved correlation between field measurements and the reduced simple ratio (RSR) suggests that the shortwave infrared (SWIR) band may provide valuable information for needle-leaf forests. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Cloud screening of satellite data for the remote sensing of atmospheric aerosols, ocean sediments, chlorophyll, and phytoplankton in the marine environment is a major probleme in the absence of information from thermal channel. This is particularly the case with the data from some of the highly potential satellite sensors such as the Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM-on broad the Indian Remote Sensing Satellite, IRS-P4) and the SeaWiFS. Two main tests conventionally used for cloud screening of data from such satellite sensors are the threshold method applied to visible and near-IR bands and the visible to near-IR channel ratio method. These methods do not have the potential to eliminate the pixels with a small cloud fractions, leading to overestimation of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) derived from satellite data, and might also identify the pixels with high values of AOD as cloudy. The purpose of this paper is to study the potential of Spatial Coherence Tests (SCT) applied to the data from the near-IR bands for cloud screening of satellite data over the oceanic environment. We use here the data from IRS-P4 OCM. Though more computationally intensive, the SCT does not suffer from the serious limitations of the threshold and channel ratio methods and is found to be superior in identifying the clear sky pixels that are not affected by clouds. Although the SCT applied to near-IR channel data may be overestimating the number of cloud affected pixels, it neither leads to overestimation of AOD nor identifies the pixels with high AOD values as cloudy. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a comprehensive approach to effectively and accurately extract coastlines from satellite imagery. It consists of a sequence of image processing algorithms, in which the key component is image segmentation based on a locally adaptive thresholding technique. Several technical innovations have been made to improve the accuracy and efficiency for determining the land/ water boundaries. The use of the Levenberg-Marquardt method and the Canny edge detector speeds up the convergence of iterative Gaussian curve fitting process and improves the accuracy of the bimodal Gaussian parameters. The result is increased reliability of local thresholds for image segmentation. A series of further image processing steps are applied to the segmented images. Particularly, grouping and labelling contiguous image regions into individual image objects enables us to utilize heuristic human knowledge about the size and continuity of the land and ocean masses to discriminate the true coastline from other object boundaries. The final product of our processing chain is a vector-based line coverage of the coastline, which can be readily incorporated into a GIS database. Our method has been applied to both radar and optical satellite images, and the positional precision of the resulting coastline is measured at the pixel level.
