[Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Descriptions of Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (geobia) often identify image segmentation as the initial step. This may be reasonable in some cases, but segmentation might also be considered a "black art," due to its image dependence and the limited amount control available to users. The resulting segments reflect the spectral structure of the image rather than the physical structure of the landscape with no one-to-one relationship between real world objects and segments. Geographic analysis often begins in the context of existing mapping. In regions with high quality large scale cartography, an obvious question is why is this information not used in the GEOBIA process? It is therefore proposed that geobia be redefined to use the best existing real world feature datasets as the starting point before segmentation is considered. Such an approach would increase opportunities for integration, improve map update initiatives, and widen uptake by end user communities. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A novel approach to color image segmentation (CIS) in scanned archival topographic maps of the 19th century is presented. Archival maps provide unique information for GIS-based change detection and are the only spatially contiguous data sources prior to the establishment of remote sensing. Processing such documents is challenging due to their very low graphical quality caused by ageing, manual production and scanning. Typical artifacts are high degrees of mixed and false coloring, as well as blurring in the images. Existing approaches for segmentation in cartographic documents are normally presented using well-conditioned maps. The CIS approach presented here uses information from the local image plane, the frequency domain and color space. As a first step, iterative clustering is based on local homogeneity, frequency of homogeneity-tested pixels and similarity. By defining a peak-finding rule, “hidden” color layer prototypes can be identified without prior knowledge. Based on these prototypes a constrained seeded region growing (SRG) process is carried out to find connected regions of color layers using color similarity and spatial connectivity. The method was tested on map pages with different graphical properties with robust results as derived from an accuracy assessment. [Termes IGN] texturageRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an operational approach for extracting wire-frame models of street facades. Georeferenced terrestrial laser rawdata are acquired by a Mobile Mapping System (MMS). The MMS constitutes an adapted tool to massively collect accurate data at street level. After a filtering step of the 3D raw point cloud of street, the street point cloud is segmented into a cloud of dominant facade walls. Piecewise quasi-planar facade cloud are then extracted using an adapted Progressive Probabilistic Hough Transform (PPHT). At the planimetric level, a cadastral map issue from an urban database is employed to segment the cloud of planar clusters into residential facade portion. Finally, each portion is vertically delimited using heuristic approaches. The adapted PPHT allows the automatic modeling of facade outlines with a fine facade line detection and a low computation time. The adapted approach has been tested on a set of point clouds acquired in the city of Paris under real conditions. Examples and experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed approach.
