[Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) The term “image fusion” covers multiple techniques used to combine the geometric detail of a high-resolution panchromatic image and the color information of a low-resolution multispectral image to produce a final image with the highest possible spatial information content while still preserving good spectral information quality. During the last twenty years, many methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Multiplicative Transform, Brovey Transform, and IHS Transform have been developed producing good quality fused images. Despite the quite good visual results, many research papers have reported the limitations of the above fusion techniques. The most significant problem is color distortion. Another common problem is that the fusion quality often depends upon the operator’s fusion experience and upon the data set being fused. In this study, we compare the efficiency of nine fusion techniques and more specifically the efficiency of IHS, Modified IHS, PCA, Pansharp, Wavelet, LMM (Local Mean Matching), LMVM (Local Mean and Variance Matching), Brovey, and Multiplicative fusion techniques for the fusion of QuickBird data. The suitability of these fusion techniques for various applications depends on the spectral and spatial quality of the fused images. In order to quantitatively measure the quality of the fused images, we have made the following controls. First, we have examined the visual qualitative result. Then, we examined the correlation between the original multispectral and the fused images and all the statistical parameters of the histograms of the various frequency bands. Finally, we performed an unsupervised classification, and we compared the resulting images. All the fusion techniques improve the resolution and the visual result. The resampling method practically has no effect on the final visual result. The LMVM, the LMM, the Pansharp, and the Wavelet merging technique do not change the statistical parameters of the original images. The Modified IHS provokes minor changes to the statistical parameters than the classical IHS or than the PCA. After all the controls, the LMVM, the LMM, the Pansharp, and the Modified IHS algorithm seem to gather the more advantages in fusion panchromatic and multispectral data. [Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) The wavelets used in image fusion can be categorized into three general classes: orthogonal, biorthogonal, and non-orthogonal. Although these wavelets share some common properties, each wavelet also has a unique image decomposition and reconstruction characteristic that leads to different fusion results. This paper focuses on the comparison of the image-fusion methods that utilize the wavelet of the above three general classes, and theoretically analyses the factors that lead to different fusion results. Normally, when a wavelet transformation alone is used for image fusion, the fusion result is not good. However, if a wavelet transform and a traditional fusion method, such as an IHS transform or a PCA transform, are integrated, better fusion results may be achieved. Therefore, this paper also discusses methods to improve wavelet-based fusion by integrating an IHS or a PCA transform. As the substitution in the IHS transform or the PCA transform is limited to only one component, the integration of the wavelet transform with the IHS or PCA to improve or modify the component, and the use of IHS or PCA transform to fuse the image, can make the fusion process simpler and faster. This integration can also better preserve colour information. IKONOS and QuickBird image data are used to evaluate the seven kinds of wavelet fusion methods (orthogonal wavelet fusion with decimation, orthogonal wavelet fusion without decimation, biorthogonal wavelet fusion with decimation, biorthogonal wavelet fusion without decimation, wavelet fusion based on the 'à trous', wavelet and IHS transformation integration, and wavelet and PCA transformation integration). The fusion results are compared graphically, visually, and statistically, and show that wavelet-integrated methods can improve the fusion result, reduce the ringing or aliasing effects to some extent, and make the whole image smoother. Comparisons of the final results also show that the final result is affected by the type of wavelets (orthogonal, biorthogonal, and non-orthogonal), decimation or undecimation, and wavelet-decomposition levels. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Forested stand structure is an important target variable within the fields of wildlife ecology. Remote sensing has often been suggested as a viable alternative to time consuming field and aerial investigations to determine forest structural attributes. In this study, 44 stands of recently harvested, regenerating, and old growth forest within the Foothills Model Forest in west-central Alberta were selected to test the ability of pan-sharpened SPOT-5 spectral response to classify stand structure. For each stand, a Structural Complexity Index (SCI) was calculated from field data using principal components analysis. To complement the spectral response data set and further increase accuracy, the normalized difference moisture index (NDMI) and three window sizes (55, 1111, and 2525) of first- (mean and standard deviation) and second-order (homogeneity, entropy, contrast, and correlation) textural measures were calculated over the pan-sharpened image. Stepwise multivariate regression analysis was used to determine the best explanatory model of the SCI using the spectral and textural data. The NDMI, first-order standard deviation and second-order correlation texture measures were better able to explain differences in SCI among the 44 forest stands (r2 = 0.79). The most appropriate window size for the texture measures was 55 indicating that this is a measure only detectable at a very high spatial resolution. The resulting classified SCI values were comparable to the actual field level SCI (r2 = 0.74, p = 0.01) and were limited by the strong variability within stands. Future research may find this measure useful either as a separate parameter or as an indicator of forest age for use in wildlife habitat modelling. [Termes IGN] sentierRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this study was to evaluate image-based procedures for monitoring cross-border foot trails in the US - Mexico border zone in eastern San Diego County using airborne remote sensing techniques. Specifically, digital multi-spectral and multi-temporal imagery from an airborne digital multi-spectral imaging system, digital image processing, and visual image analysis techniques were explored in the context of detecting and delineating new trail features and updating trail GIS layers. Three trail updating approaches: map-to-image (M-I) overlay, map and image-to-image (M/I-I) differencing, map and image-to-image (M/I-I) swiping and two types of spectral transform, PCA and NDVI, were tested and compared. The M-I overlay was found to be the most reliable trail updating approach. The optimal image enhancement method for the M-I overlay approach varied with vegetation structure. PCA imagery yielded better results than NDVI imagery in a highly disturbed area and NDVI imagery performed better in a densely vegetated area. The M/I-I swiping approach was useful for distinguishing misregistered extant trails from new trail features. [Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) Existing image fusion techniques such as the intensity–hue–saturation (IHS) transform and principal components analysis (PCA) methods may not be optimal for fusing the new generation commercial high-resolution satellite images such as Ikonos and QuickBird. One problem is color distortion in the fused image, which causes visual changes as well as spectral differences between the original and fused images. In this paper, a fast Fourier transform (FFT)-enhanced IHS method is developed for fusing new generation high-resolution satellite images. This method combines a standard IHS transform with FFT filtering of both the panchromatic image and the intensity component of the original multispectral image. Ikonos and QuickBird data are used to assess the FFT-enhanced IHS transform method. Experimental results indicate that the FFT-enhanced IHS transform method may improve upon the standard IHS transform and the PCA methods in preserving spectral and spatial information.
