[Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Ground-based measurements of plant reflectance and transmittance are essential for remote sensing projects oriented toward agriculture, forestry, and ecology. This paper examines the application of principal components analysis (PCA) in the storage and reconstruction of such plant spectral data. A novel piecewise PCA approach (PPCA), which takes into account the biological factors that affect the interaction of solar radiation with plants, is also proposed. These techniques are compared through experiments involving the reconstruction of reflectance and transmittance curves for herbaceous and woody specimens. The spectral data used in these experiments were obtained from the Leaf Optical Properties Experiment (LOPEX) database. The reconstructions were performed aiming at a root-mean-square error (RMSE) lower than 1%. The results of these experiments indicate that PCA can effectively reduce the dimensionality of plant spectral databases from the visible to the infrared regions of the light spectrum, and that the PPCA approach can further maximize the accuracy/cost ratio of the storage and reconstruction of plant spectral reflectance and transmittance data. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) A study of the active Mount Cameroon volcano, located south west along the Cameroon Volcanic Line, was carried out during the 1999 volcanic eruption, using Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM) imagery. It investigated geologic deformations expressed as faults, cracks and lineaments resulting from the eruption. Various image processing techniques were tested and compared in order to detect the most effective output. Principal Component Analysis was found to be useful to determine the extent of deformations caused during the 1999 volcanic eruptions. Landsat ETM revealed the formation of faults and lineaments with proximity to eruption vents. The interpretation obtained from satellite imagery was cross checked with field and ground truthing data. This paper identifies the dimensions and orientations of the newly formed geologic features. [Termes IGN] viticultureRésumé : (Auteur) A number of experiments using ground-based and airborne sensors have shown the high potential of L-band passive microwave radiometry for estimating and monitoring surface soil moisture. This has led to the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission, a European Space Agency (ESA) Earth Explorer Opportunity mission. SMOS has the objective to observe soil moisture over land and sea surface salinity over sea, both key parameters for atmospheric, oceanographic and hydrological predictive models. In preparation of SMOS, the EuroSTARRS airborne campaign was carried out in November 2001. Multi-angular measurements of the surface brightness temperature at L-band (1.4GHz) at vertical polarization were acquired by the 'Salinity Temperature and Roughness Remote Scanner' (STARRS) radiometer from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL, USA) over several sites in Southern France, the Pyrenees and Eastern Spain. The chosen sites represent specific land conditions and vegetation canopies where microwave surface emission models need further investigation, and include: dense forests, shrubs and scrubland, mixed areas of different vegetation covers and areas with variable topography. This paper gives an overview of the experiment, including a discussion of the objectives, description of the sites, details of the microwave measurements and some first results of the campaign. First, a principal component analysis of the forest brightness temperature measured at different configurations illustrates the sensitivity of brightness temperature to biomass conditions for coniferous trees. Then, the microwave signature of the vegetation covers considered in this study-coniferous forest at Les Landes (France), mixed deciduous/coniferous stands at the Agre forest (France), shrubland, vineyards and orchards at the Valencia site (Spain) - is illustrated, in particular as regards to the dependance of the L-band emissivity to biomass conditions. [Termes IGN] turbidité des eauxRésumé : (Auteur) Many aquatic ecosystems in the United States and worldwide are impaired by the over-enrichment of waters by nutrients. In advanced stages, the process of eutrophication can cause harmful algae blooms. This research retrieved the concentrations of suspended chlorophyll (Chl), suspended minerals (SM), colored dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and turbidity (total attenuation) from AVIRIS imagery of a severely overenriched waterway in North Carolina, and evaluated if these parameters could be used as indicators of conditions leading to algae blooms. A digital image processing algorithm called Qsc1 (Quantitative Shoreline Characterization, Version 1.0) was used. The retrieved water quality parameter values were tested by statistical comparisons to field measurements made at the time of the AVIRIS data collection. Applying Qsc1 to AVIRIS imagery resulted in measurements of Chl that correlated well with field measurements (r = 0.84). Problems with field sampling prevented the assessment of retrieveSM and Doc. The statistical correlation analysis indicated that, for comparison to remotely sensed data, field measurements in the steadily flowing Neuse River must be collected within two hours of the imagery. Thematic maps of each water quality parameter were generated from the imagery and evaluated. The maps of Chl showed spatial patterns consistent with the field data and circulation of the river, and indicated potential point and non-point sources. Statistical and principle component analyses were used to assess whether the AVIRIS water quality measurements were directly or indirectly related to parameters and conditions indicative of nutrient loading and algae blooms that were measured in the field. The AVIRIS measurements were used to create a new index of eutrophication, the Algae Production Potential Index (Appi), for the purpose of mapping where conditions of high nutrient loading and potential algae blooms exist. The index uses direct measurements of Chl, Doc, and Sm (as a surrogate for phosphate). These measurements are combined in a Gis model based on ecological relationships. Although not field verified, the APPI map shows patterns of algae bloom conditions that are similar in size, scale, and location to previous blooms in the Neuse.
Note de contenu : Introduction
