[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Timely and accurate change detection of Earth's surface features is extremely important for understanding relationships and interactions between human and natural phenomena in order to promote better decision making. Remote sensing data are primary sources extensively used for change detection in recent decades. Many change detection techniques have been developed. This paper summarizes and reviews these techniques. Previous literature has shown that image differencing, principal component analysis and post-classification comparison are the most common methods used for change detection. In recent years, spectral mixture analysis, artificial neural networks and integration of geographical information system and remote sensing data have become important techniques for change detection applications. Different change detection algorithms have their own merits and no single approach is optimal and applicable to all cases. In practice, different algorithms are often compared to find the best change detection results for a specific application. Research of change detection techniques is still an active topic and new techniques are needed to effectively use the increasingly diverse and complex remotely sensed data available or projected to be soon available from satellite and airborne sensors. This paper is a comprehensive exploration of all the major change detection approaches implemented as found in the literature. [Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (Auteur) Although change detection algorithms for temporal remote sensing images have been compared using various datasets, there is no general agreement on their performance for separating change and no-change. This study compared image differencing, image ratioing, image regression, and principal component analysis (PCA) from a mathematical perspective. Error analysis showed that no-change pixels with errors are expected to be located within an error zone in bitemporal space. Bi-temporal space consists of two temporal axes of target pixel values observed successively. All algorithms confine a no-change area to a zone delineating change and no-change pixels in the space. Image ratioing defines a fan-like sector as a no-change area, generally unsuitable for change detection. The other algorithms confine a no-change area to a strip-like zone. Image differencing defines a no-change zone with a fixed slope, leading to its inability to specify flexibly the error zone that varies with different conditions. In the examined case, image regression and standardized PCA (SPCA) achieved the best performance for change detection, followed by PCA, image differencing, and image ratioing. [Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) Since Chavez proposed the highpass filtering procedure to fuse multispectral and panchromatic images, several fusion methods have been developed based on the same principle: to extract from the panchromatic image spatial detail information to later inject it into the multispectral one. In this paper, we present new fusion alternatives based on the same concept, using the mul-resolution wavelet decomposition to execute the detail extraction phase and the intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) and principal component analysis (PCA) procedures to inject the spatial detail of the panchromatic image into the multispectral one. The multiresoluson wavelet decomposition has been performed using both decimated and undecimated algorithms and the resulting merged images compared both spectral and spatially. These fusion methods, as well as standard IHS-, PCA-, and wavelet-based methods have been used to merge Systeme Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) A XI and SPOT 4 M images with a ratio 4: 1. We have estimated the validity of each fusion method by analyzing, visually and quantitatively, the quality of the resulting fused images. The methoddogical approaches proposed in this paper result in merged images with improved quality with respect to those obtained by standard IHS, PCA, and standard wavelet-based fusion methods. For both proposed fusion methods, better results are obtained when an undecimated algorithm is used to perform the multiresolution wavelet decomposition. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) A comparison of the performance of three feature extraction methods was made for mapping forest crown closure (CC) and leaf area index (LAI) with EO-1 Hyperion data. The methods are band selection (SB), principal component analysis (PCA) and wavelet transform (WT). Hyperion data were acquired on October 9, 200 1. A total of 38 field measurements of CC and LAI were collected on August 10 - 11, 2001, at Blodgett Forest Research Station, University of California at Berkeley, USA. The analysis method consists of (1) conducting atmospheric correction with High Accuracy Atmospheric Correction for Hyperspectral Data (HATCH) to retrieve surface reflectance, (2) extracting features with the three methods: SB, PCA and WT, (3) establishing multivariate regression prediction models, (4) predicting and mapping pixel-based CC and LAI values, and (5) validating the CC and LAI mapped results with photo-interpreted CC and LAI values. The experimental results indicate that the energy features extracted by the WT method are the most effective for mapping forest CC and LAI (mapped accuracy (MA) for CC = 84.90%, LAI MA= 75.39%), followed by the PCA method (CC MA= 77.42%, LAI MA= 52.36%). The SB method performed the worst (CC MA= 57.77%, LAI MA= 50.87%). [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) The backscattering coefficient ä from a time series of ERS-2 SAR data showed high correlation (r 2 =0.94) and high sensitivity to the observed surface soil moisture at a field scale. The observations agreed well with the simulations from the two surface scattering models tested in the study area. A single coincidence of the ERS-2 and RADARSAT missions, with two different polarizations, provided an opportunity to estimate soil moisture over a large area by inverting the Dubois model. The estimates were validated with the field observations over a small area and are in good agreement with standard error of estimate (SEE) equal to 1.01 cm3 cm-3. Furthermore, different soil moisture estimation methods were tested and compared with the observations to better understand the temporal and spatial variability of this important parameter. Soil moisture at a point was simulated using three hydrological models and compared with the radar backscattering and the point observations. There is a large variation in the responses among them. Simple statistical approaches viz., coefficient of variation and principal component analysis were used for mapping the spatial patterns of soil moisture over a large area using a time series of ERS-2 data. These simple methods helped to map areas where the moisture availability is not varying much. This information about soil moisture distribution is of vital importance to the hydrological processes especially the variable source area concept.
