[Termes IGN] similitudeRésumé : (Auteur) Classification is one of the basic tasks of data mining in modem database applications including molecular biology, astronomy, mechanical engineering, medical imaging or meteorology. The underlying models have to consider spatial properties such as shape or extension as well as thematic attributes. We introduce 3D shape histograms as an intuitive and powerful similarity model for 3D objects. Particular flexibility is provided by using quadratic form distance functions in order to account for errors of measurement, sampling, and numerical rounding that all may result in small displacements and rotations of shapes. For query processing, a general filter-refinement architecture is employed that efficiently supports similarity search based on quadratic forms. An experimental evaluation in the context of molecular biology demonstrates both, the high classification accuracy of more than 90% and the good performance of the approach. (doc) In order to develop a cartographic design expert system, the nature and the classification of geographic data must be clarified and formalized. Metadata are defined here as “detailed knowledge of the nature of individual feature classes in a dataset required by the expert system”. Different descriptions of geographic features by well-known authors are discussed from a cartographic viewpoint and six classes of spatial data types are proposed with their relationships between classes. Attributes are also reviewed, mainly the level of measurement, in a data quality approach. Finally, a classification for a 2D cartographic representation of spatial data completes this formalization.

[Termes IGN] réflectanceRésumé : (Documentaliste) Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technology has been investigated to assess its performance for complex pattern recognition problems and spatial data integration. The Nanga Parbat massif and glaciers in the Himalayas has been chosen because its very complex geomorphology makes information extraction very difficult. High resolution SPOT panchromatic data were used without radiometric calibration. Though training time of the ANN structure is related to degree of complexity in the sampled spatial reflectance patterns, minimal training was sufficient to map the characteristics of three glaciers accurately. The results show that ANN technology is appropriate to recognize spatial reflectance patterns. This technology is superior to the ISODATA clustering algorithm and has a potential for extracting information in mountainous terrain. [Termes IGN] valeur propreRésumé : (Auteur) Within the last decade several studies using polarimetric SAR data for bio-/geo-physical feature extraction have been reported and have significantly improved the understanding of polarimetric scattering mechanisms. In a comparative view, the approach presented here, which is based on Shane Cloud's Decomposition Theorem, seems to be most promising : the Entropy H and Angle Classification has been extended by using not only the parameters H and but also the first eigenvalue1. A big advantage of this approach is the high correlation between its results and the physical properties of different landsurface materials, which makes this recently adapted method well-suited for both supervised and automated landcover classification. It is also most useful for the derivation of topographic as well as thematic map information, the scale naturally depending on the sensor's spatial resolution. The well-known DLR Oberpfaffenhofen study site in southern Germany served as a testbed for the exploitation of spaceborne SIR-C/X-SAR data and of L-band data from DLR's airborne experimental ESAR. For validation purposes the classification results have been high-precision geocoded and compared to both ground truth and recent map data, also superimposing the digital national topographic geodata of Germany, ATKIS. The classification proved to be of extraordinary accuracy, as far as can be judged by visual inspection. An exact quantification is underway. The approach presented is being further developed and will - in contrast to the flat test-site used so far - be applied to data flown by a new airborne SAR sensor over mountainous terrain at the northern rim of the Bavarian Alps. First results in this respect look very promising.
