[Termes IGN] Yunnan (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) Mapping dominant vegetation communities is important work for vegetation scientists. It is very difficult to map dominant vegetation communities using multispectral remote sensing data only, especially in mountain areas. However plant community data contain useful information about the relationships between plant communities and their environment. In this paper, plant community data are linked with remote sensing to map vegetation communities. The Bayesian soft classifier was used to produce posterior probability images for each class. These images were used to calculate the prior probabilities. One hundred and eighty plant plots at Meili Snow Mountain, Yunnan Province, China were used to characterize the vegetation distribution for each class along altitude gradients. Then, the frequencies were used to modify the prior probabilities of each class. After stratification in a vegetation part and a non-vegetation part, a maximum-likelihood classification with equal prior probabilities was conducted, yielding an overall accuracy of 82.1% and a kappa accuracy of 0.797. Maximum-likelihood classification with modified prior probabilities in the vegetation part, conducted with a conventional maximum-likelihood classification for the non-vegetation part, yielded an overall accuracy of 87.7%, and a kappa accuracy of 0.861. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) Commercial high spatial resolution satellite data now provide a synoptic and consistent source of digital imagery with detail comparable to that of aerial photography. In the work described here, per-pixel classification, image fusion, and GIS-based map refinement techniques were tailored to pan-sharpened 0.61 m QuickBird imagery to develop a six-category urban land-cover map with 89.3 percent overall accuracy (k = 0.87). The study area was a rapidly developing 71.5 km2 part of suburban Raleigh, North Carolina, U.S.A., within the Neuse River basin. “Edge pixels” were a source of classification error as was spectral overlap between bare soil and impervious surfaces and among vegetated cover types. Shadows were not a significant source of classification error. These findings demonstrate that conventional spectral-based classification methods can be used to generate highly accurate maps of urban landscapes using high spatial resolution imagery. [Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (Auteur) Census population data are associated with several analytical and cartographic problems. Regression models using remote-sensing covariates have been examined to estimate urban population density, but the performance may not be satisfactory. This paper describes a kriging-based areal interpolation method, namely area-to-point residual kriging, which can be used to disaggregate the residuals remaining from regression. Compared with conventional cokriging, the area-to-point residual kriging is much simpler in that only a semivariogram model for the point residuals is required, as opposed to a set of auto- and cross-semivariogram models involving the dependent variable and all the covariates. In addition, area-to-point residual kriging explicitly accounts for any scale differences between source data and target values. The method is illustrated by disaggregating population from census units to the land-use zones within them. Comparative results for regression with and without area-to-point residual kriging show that area-to-point residual kriging can substantially improve interpolation accuracy. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Spatial optimization problems, such as route selection, usually involve multiple, conflicting objectives relevant to locations. An ideal approach to solving such multiobjective optimization problems (MOPs) is to find an evenly distributed set of Pareto-optimal alternatives, which is capable of representing the possible trade-off among different objectives. However, these MOPs are commonly solved by combining the multiple objectives into a parametric scalar objective, in the form of a weighted sum function. It has been found that this method fails to produce a set of well spread solutions by disregarding the concave part of the Pareto front. In order to overcome this ill-behaved nature, a novel adaptive approach has been proposed in this paper. This approach seeks to provide an unbiased approximation of the Pareto front by tuning the search direction in the objective space according to the largest unexplored region until a set of well-distributed solutions is reached. To validate the proposed methodology, a case study on multiobjective routing has been performed using the Singapore road network with the support of GIS. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the approach. [Termes IGN] polygoneRésumé : (Auteur) We often need to report on environmental, economic and social indicators, and properties at aggregated spatial scales, e.g. average income per suburb. To do this, we invariably create reporting polygons that are somewhat arbitrary. The question arises: how much does this arbitrary subdivision of space affect the outcome? In this paper, we develop a new, gradient-based framework for carrying out a rigorous analysis of the sensitivity of integrating functions to quantitative changes in their spatial configuration. This approach is applied to both analytical and empirical models, and it allows the reporting of a hierarchy of sensitivity measures (from global to local). We found that the concepts of a vector space representing the spatial configurations and the response (hyper-)surface on which gradients indicate the sensitivities to be helpful in developing the sensitivity analytical framework of spatial configurations in different dimensions. This approach works well with both analytical and empirical integrating functions. This approach resulted in a clear ranking of the sensitivities of the responses to changes in the reporting regions in an existing environmental reporting application. The approach also allowed us to find which vertices, and the directions of change of those vertices, influenced the outcome most. The application of the spatial framework allows the results to be reported in a hierarchical way, from the sensitivities of an integrative response to changes in a whole reserve/reporting system, down to the sensitivity along each of the dimensions of the vertices in the spatial configuration. The results of the spatial sensitivity framework that we developed in this paper can be readily visualized by plotting the sensitivities as vectors on geographic maps. This simplifies the presentation and facilitates the uptake of the results in the situations where the spatial configurations are complicated.
