[Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) This research was designed to evaluate the operational utility of airborne video for classification accuracy assessment of satellite imagery. There are a number of logistical advantages in utilizing airborne video data particularly in remote or large catchment regions where ground accessibility can be prohibitively expensive. In a study of land cover characteristics in the Barossa Valley, South Australia comparisons of Landsat ETM+ classification accuracy assessments were derived from both airborne video and standard ground truthing point sampling techniques. The airborne video data was obtained by randomly frame grabbing 243 individual scenes along four predetermined flight lines and computing classification accuracies and error matrix statistics. These results were then compared with similar statistics derive ' dfirom 180 randomly chosen ground sampling sites. The costs involved in obtaining both sets of data per sampling point were also calculated. The results demonstrated that the airborne video data provided similar degrees of accuracy assessment at a cost of approximately one seventh that of the ground survey with the added advantages of increased data collection, overall improved site accessibility and the ability to continually store and review the data. The cost differentiation would become even more pronounced in more remote and inaccessible areas. In general the results of the unsupervised Landsat ETM+ classification were rather poor producing an overall general accuracy of 70% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.65, highlighting the classification difficulties encountered in using commercial satellite imagery for land cover assessments in an area with very heterogeneous fine grained land use patterns. It is therefore of special importance to select such an area to carry out an intensive land use change study and establish a dynamic monitoring system thereof aiming at understanding the change mechanism, human-environmental relationships and producing useful references for the central and local governments in their sustainable land use planning.
Multitemporal Landsat images were used for change detection by adopting a synthetic method including atmospheric correction, Tasseled Cap transformation, indicator differencing, thresholding, change type identification and county-level quantification. A classification on the recent image was conducted to quantify the present land use and cover pattern. A panel analysis calibrated by multivariate regression model was applied to reveal the driving forces of land cover changes and understand the interaction between the human activities and environment modifications by incorporating the results obtained from the change detection with the county-level socio-economic data. The regression modelling results suggest that the vegetation degradation- the predominant change type in the study area, is probably related to the soil erosion (R' = 0.994) and grassland degradation; the farmland extension, occurring principally in the valleys in the Yulin County, is associated with the foodproduct increase (R' = 0.987); the urban extension, spatially related to coal mining, is linked to the urban population growth (R' = 0. 881); and the surface decrease of waterbodies, having taken place in the sandy land, is negatively correlated to the cultivated land change (R' = 0. 562). Therefore, the factors which govern these land use and cover changes are various human socio-economic activities, and the root cause of land degradation is, however, some unreasonable land use policies.Numéro de notice : A2003-392 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : sans Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=26472

[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The urban environment is characterized by an intense multifunctional use of available spaces, where the preservation of open green spaces is of special importance. For this purpose, areawide urban biotope mapping based on CIR aerial photographs has been carried out for the large cities in Germany during the last 10 years. Because of dynamic urban development and high mapping costs, the municipal authorities are interested in effective methods for mapping urban surface cover types, which can be used for evaluation of ecological conditions in urban structures and supporting updates of biotope maps. Against this background, airborne hyperspectral remote sensing data of the DAIS 7915 instrument have been analyzed for a test site in the city of Dresden (Germany) with regard to their potential for automated materialoriented identification of urban surface cover types. Previous investigations have shown that the high spectral and spatial variabilities of these data require the development of special methods, which are capable of dealing with the resulting mixedpixel problem in its specific characteristics in urban areas. Earlier, methodological developments led to an approach based on a combination of spectral classification and pixeloriented unmixing techniques to facilitate sensible endmember selection based on the reflective bands of the DAIS instrument. This approach is now extended by a shapebased classification technique including the thermal bands of the DAIS instrument to improve the detection of buildings during the process of identifying seedling pixels, which represent the starting points for linear spectral unmixing. This new approach increases the reliability of differentiation between buildings and open spaces, leading to more accurate results for the spatial distribution of surface cover types. Thus, the new approach significantly enhances the exploitation of the information potential of the hyperspectral DAIS 7915 data for an areawide identification of urban surface cover types. [Termes IGN] trajet multipleRésumé : (Auteur) Answer: The winner of the 1971 Nobel Prize for Physics. The question? Who defined the most important signal parameter for controlling GPS multipath? The British/Hungarian physicist Dennis Gabor won the prize for the invention of holography. However, Gabor was also one of a handful of mathematicians and scientists who developed communication theory during the 1940s. Communication theory, also called information theory, is the branch of mathematics that deals with the efficient and accurate transmission of information-bearing signals from one place to another. Key to the theory is the concept of signal bandwidth. Now bandwidth can be defined in a number of different ways, but the particular bandwidth named after Cabor determines, in part, how accurately a GPS receiver can measure pseudorange or carrier phase in the presence of multipath. The Gabor bandwidth is determined by the particular shape of the signal's power spectral density function, and the larger the bandwidth the more resistant is the signal to multipath. The GPS receiver must have a processor that takes advantage of this resistance to provide measurements with minimal multipath contamination. Here, Dr Lawrence Weill outlines an implementation of a multipath mitigation algorithm based on the statistical theory of maximum likelihood and describes its expected performance with the new GPS signals soon to be available - signals characterized by a higher Cabor bandwidth than those currently transmitted.
