[Termes IGN] vectorisationRésumé : (Auteur) Land Cover Map 2000 (LCM2000) is a thematic classification of satellite image data covering the entire United Kingdom. The map updates and substantially upgrades the Land Cover Map of Great Britain (LCMGB), made in 1990-92. This paper outlines the character of the map through a description of its specification, production and outputs. The paper is aimed at users of LCM2000 and derived data who need to understand more of the map and its characteristics. The paper also outlines plans for making data available to researchers and applied users. The most important development in LCM2000 was the spectral segmentation of images to generate vector land parcels. Land cover was then identified by the spectral classification of the image data in these parcels. Classification used specially developed procedures which exploited known spatial, spectral and contextual characteristics of land cover. The resultant GIS incorporates, within its vector structure, detailed attribute data which record parcel-based land cover, plus information on class probabilities, data on withinparcel heterogeneity, information on landscape structure and context, cover information from LCMGB, together with a record of each parcel's processing history. [Termes IGN] orthorectificationRésumé : (Auteur) Hidden areas and shadow effects are major causes of information loss in large-scale aerial photos of built-up areas. Both types of loss severely degrade the interpretability of orthophotos. An abrupt change of surface height is the primary cause of these defects. Thus, surface discontinuities, the orientation parameters of the sensors, and solar orientation are all keyfactors in determining the extent of defects. We thus propose an ortho-rectification scheme, which will compensate for hidden areas and shadow effects in built-up areas, by using multi-view images. The proposed scheme utilizes projection geometry to detect hidden and shadowed areas. For hidden areas, lost information is recovered from corresponding images. A seamless mosaic technique, utilizing gray-value balance, is suggested to reduce gray value discontinuity. For shadowed areas, dimmed features are enhanced using the local histogram matching method to improve image interpretability. Experimental results indicate that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce hidden and shadow defects. Both radiometric and geometric aspects of the proposed product and process are investigated. [Termes IGN] valeur efficaceRésumé : (Auteur) This paper examines the performance of artificial neural networks (ANNs) as a method of spatial interpolation, when presented with irregular and regular samples of elevation data. The results of the ANN interpolation are compared with results obtained by kriging. Tests of spatial bias in the systematic errors contained in each of the neural network-derived DEMs were conducted using four attributes: slope, aspect, average direction and average distance from the nearest sampled value. Based on RMS and other evaluation measures, the accuracy of estimated DEMs from regular and irregular sample distributions using neural networks is lower than the accuracy level derived from kriging. The accuracy level of the ANN interpolators also decreases as the range of elevation values in DEMs increases. As reported in the literature, ANNs are approximate interpolators, and the pattern of under-prediction and over-prediction of elevation values in this study revealed that all estimated values fell within the range of sample elevations. Neural networks cannot predict values outside the range of elevation values contained in the sample, a property shared by other interpolators such as inverse weighted distance.
