[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Quaking aspen, Populus tremuloides, has experienced severe declines in recent years in part due to the effects of changing climate and extreme drought. This study set out to investigate these effects by assessing associations of climatic, edaphic and topographic variables with physiological drought stress in aspen. The study took place on the Zumwalt Prairie in northeastern Oregon, a semi-arid bunchgrass prairie where aspen occur in isolated stands associated with riparian areas and late-season persistence of snow drifts. Using a 33-year time series of Landsat imagery to detect associations of aspen stands late-season snow cover and field measurements of soil moisture in aspen stands during 2017, we found while snow dominated stands were associated with greater soil moisture during spring, levels had equilibrated to those of other upland stands by summer. Measurements of predawn and midday stem Ψ in multiple height classes of aspen ramets revealed associations of both shallow soil moisture and vapor pressure deficit with physiological drought stress in aspen. Analysis of soil texture class revealed an important association with midday stem Ψ, with finer textured soils associated with decreased stem Ψ in comparison to coarser textured soils. While neither topographical characteristics nor snow cover were found to be important drivers of drought stress, topographical curvature was found to have a strong influence on summer soil moisture in upland stands. These findings contribute to our understanding of aspen physiology, drought ecology and landscape hydrology toward the xeric margin of aspen’s range. This information can help land managers anticipate and adapt to changing climates and understand their effects on key plant species such as aspen. [Termes IGN] régression logistiqueRésumé : (auteur) Landslide susceptibility mapping is a crucial initial step in risk mitigation strategies. Landslide hazards are widely spread all over the world and, as such, mapping the relevant susceptibility levels is in constant research and development. As a result, numerous modelling techniques and approaches have been adopted by scholars, implementing these models at different scales and with different terrains, in search of the best-performing strategy. Nevertheless, a direct comparison is not possible unless the strategies are implemented under the same environmental conditions and scenarios. The aim of this work is to implement three statistical-based models (Statistical Index, Logistic Regression, and Random Forest) at the basin scale, using various scenarios for the input datasets (terrain variables), training samples and ratios, and validation metrics. A reassessment of the original input data was carried out to improve the model performance. In total, 79 maps were obtained using different combinations with some highly satisfactory outcomes and others that are barely acceptable. Random Forest achieved the highest scores in most of the cases, proving to be a reliable modelling approach. While Statistical Index passes the evaluation tests, most of the resulting maps were considered unreliable. This research highlighted the importance of a complete and up-to-date landslide inventory, the knowledge of local conditions, as well as the pre- and post-analysis evaluation of the input and output combinations. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) The objective of the current study is to estimate the annual average soil loss through RUSLE model and furthermore assess the soil erosion risk and its distribution using frequency ratio (FR) probability algorithm. At first, soil erosion risk zones were identified using FR model by the consideration 14 soil erosion conditioning factors such as land use (LU/LC), slope, slope aspect, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), altitude, plan curvature, stream power index, distance from river, road, and lineament, soil types, rainfall erosivity, slope length and lineament density. Secondly, the spatial pattern of annual average soil loss rates was estimated using RUSLE model with consideration of five factors such as, rainfall erosivity (R), cover management (C), slope length (LS), soil erodability (K), and conservation practice factors (P). In order to map soil erosion susceptibility by the FR model, dataset divided randomly into parts 70/30 percent for training and validation purposes, respectively. Based on the FR value, the susceptibility map was reclassified into five different critical erosion probability zones. Among this, the severe and high erosion zones occupy 13.69% and 16.26%, respectively, of the total area, where as low and very low susceptibility zones together constitute 32.98% of the River Basin. The assessed high amount of average annual soil erosion (more than 100 t/ha/year) is occupied 9.55% of the total study area. It is conclude that high soil erosion susceptibility and yearly average soil loss were performed in this study area. Therefore, the produced soil erosion susceptibility maps and annual average soil erosion map can be very useful for primary land use planning and soil erosion hazard mitigation purpose for prioritizing areas. [Termes IGN] Suez, canal deRésumé : (auteur) The Nile Delta is located very close to the Suez Canal, the main route for oil transport in the world, makes it prone to pollution from any accidental oil spills in the Mediterranean Sea. The coast of the Nile Delta is generally arcuate and highly exposed to waves and currents. The present study attempted to perform the environmental sensitivity of the shoreline to oil slicks. Six variables were incorporated together in order to determine the environmental sensitivity index (ESI). Data were collected from different resources and from in situ observations. Results showed that the ESI is generally high for the western section of the Nile Delta, particularly along Alexandria region. Low ESI was observed along the shorelines facing the coastal sand dunes at the middle part of the delta coast. The ESI is an effective approach to delineate the vulnerable coastal areas to marine oil pollution.
