[Termes IGN] representativitéRésumé : (Auteur) Land cover maps obtained from classification of remotely sensed imagery provide valuable information in numerous environmental monitoring and modeling tasks. However, many uncertainties and errors can directly or indirectly affect the quality of derived maps. This work focuses on one key aspect of the supervised classification process of remotely sensed imagery: the quality of the reference dataset used to develop a classifier. More specifically, the representative power of the reference dataset is assessed by contrasting it with the full dataset (e.g. entire image) needing classification. Our method is applicable in several ways: training or testing datasets (extracted from the reference dataset) can be compared with the full dataset. The proposed method moves beyond spatial sampling schemes (e.g. grid, cluster) and operates in the multidimensional feature space (e.g. spectral bands) and uses spatial statistics to compare information density of data to be classified with data used in the reference process. The working hypothesis is that higher information density, not in general but with respect to the entire classified image, expresses higher confidence in obtained results. Presented experiments establish a close link between confidence metrics and classification accuracy for a variety of image classifiers namely maximum likelihood, decision tree, Backpropagation Neural Network and Support Vector Machine. A sensitivity analysis demonstrates that spatially-continuous reference datasets (e.g. a square window) have the potential to provide similar classification confidence as typically-used spatially-random datasets. This is an important finding considering the higher acquisition costs for randomly distributed datasets. Furthermore, the method produces confidence maps that allow spatially-explicit comparison of confidence metrics within a given image for identification of over- and under-represented image portions. The current method is presented for individual image classification but, with sufficient evaluation from the remote sensing community it has the potential to become a standard for reference dataset reporting and thus allowing users to assess representativeness of reference datasets in a consistent manner across different classification tasks. [Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (Auteur) MassMov2D is a numerical model for simulating runout and deposition of landslide phenomena over a complex topography that is implemented in the free GIS PCRaster. This research aims at improving the mechanism of MassMov2D calibration and verifying its capability of representing complex landslides. In this article the authors present the enhancement of the MassMov2D code due to the introduction of the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient for model efficiency calculation; this enables the replacement of the inefficient ‘trial and error’ approach used for sensitivity analysis and calibration with a semi-automatic procedure. During this research the improved code was tested in a case study located on the Canaria Valley (Switzerland) where a complex landslide occurred. An optimal set of parameters were calculated for evaluating the effects of a possible further slope failure. The availability of a unique dataset of high resolution digital elevation models just before and after the collapse allowed precise evaluation of the sensitivity and calibration of the model with the new procedure. The results demonstrate that this model is capable of reproducing the observed deposits even though some model limitations were identified in steep slope areas. Finally the study presents the expected scenario due to a future landslide. [Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (auteur) Roads in mountains areas are exposed to natural hazards such as snow avalanches, torrent floods and rockfalls. Risk depends both on hazard, direct and indirect vulnerability. In case of roads, the indirect vulnerability relates to the consequences of road closures which is rarely assessed. The criticality of these closures depends on the importance of road sections. A new methodology is proposed in the context of natural risks management in mountains. Based on structural networks analysis, it aims to assess the accessibility level of mountain territories and to identify critical roads sections depending both on their exposure to phenomenons but also on the importance of roads on economic, social, environmental contexts. The structural network analysis allows to describe how far the network properties conditions the accessibility from one point to another. This approach is combined to multicriteria decision making to assess importance according to economic, social or human factors but also fragility, resilience or risk sensitivity on road sections. [Termes IGN] variationRésumé : (Auteur) As underpinned by various studies in the last years, temporal changes of the Earth’s gravity field contain a wealth of information on mass redistribution processes in the Earth’s system particularly associated with variations in continental water storage. By combining satellite and terrestrial observations with superconducting gravimeters (SG) a maximum of information can be gained due to the different temporal and spatial sampling. Esp. the cluster of superconducting gravimeters in central Europe is well suited for studies related to spatial and temporal changes in continental water storage. Due to the distribution of SG sites different sensitivities of the instruments are to be expected on changes in the various river and drainage basins which could, if sufficiently pronounced, be deployed to pinpoint areas in which main discrepancies between modelled and actual water storage changes occur and would thus allow us to fine-tune hydrological models. Based on the Water-Gap Global Hydrological Model (WGHM), this sensitivity of the SG observations is investigated. One compartment of the WGHM is surface water, thus comprising rivers, flooding areas, and major reservoirs. This contribution is given for the total cell of 0.5 0.5 and not localized, e.g. in a riverbed, therefore the question arises to which extent localization or non-localization of this compartment affects the estimate if the respective surface waters are in the vicinity of 50km around the SG stations. It can be shown, however, that the lateral distribution of the surface water masses plays only a negligible role for the central European stations meaning distributed surface water masses are an acceptable simplification when estimating hydrological effects. It emerges that variations in water storage in regions outside central Europe produce comparable effects on gravity at all sites and the impact of basins within central Europe is clearly distinguishable among the SG stations.
