[Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (auteur) As interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data improve in their global coverage and temporal sampling, studies of ground deformation using InSAR are becoming feasible even in heavily vegetated regions such as the American Pacific Northwest (PNW) and Sumatra. However, ongoing forest disturbance due to logging, wildfires, or disease can introduce time-variable signals which could be misinterpreted as ground displacements. This study constrains the error introduced into InSAR time series in the presence of time-variable forest disturbance using synthetic data. For satellite platforms with randomly distributed orbital positions in time (e.g., Sentinel-1), mid-time series forest disturbance results in random error on the order of 0.2 and 10 cm/year for 1-year secular and time-variable velocities, respectively. If the orbital positions are not randomly distributed in time (e.g., ALOS-1), a biased error on the order of 10 cm/year is introduced to the inferred secular velocity. A time series using real ALOS-1 data near Eugene, OR, USA, shows agreement with the bias estimated by synthetic models. Mitigation of time-variable land cover change effects can be achieved if their timing is known, either through independent observations of surface properties (e.g., Landsat/Sentinel-2) or through the use of more computationally expensive, nonlinear inversions with additional terms for the timing of height changes. Inclusion of these additional terms reduces the potential for misinterpretation of InSAR signals associated with land surface change as ground deformation. [Termes IGN] système de référence géodésiqueRésumé : (auteur) Our planet Earth is constantly deforming under the effects of geophysical processes that cause linear and nonlinear displacements of the geodetic stations upon which the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) is established. The ITRF has traditionally been defined as a secular (linear) frame in which station coordinates are described by piecewise linear functions of time. Nowadays, some particularly demanding applications however require more elaborate reference frame representations that can accommodate non-linear displacements of the reference stations. Two such types of reference frame representations are reviewed: the usual linear frame enhanced with additional parametric functions such as seasonal sine waves, and non-parametric time series of quasi-instantaneous reference frames. After introducing those two reference frame representations, we briefly review the systematic errors present in geodetic station position time series. We finally discuss the practical issues raised by the existence of these systematic errors for the implementation of both types of non-linear reference frames. [Termes IGN] valeur aberranteRésumé : (auteur) The estimation of image orientation (also called pose) has always played a crucial role in the field of photogrammetry since it is a fundamental prerequisite for the subsequent works of multi-view dense matching, generating DEM and DSM, etc. In the community of computer vision, the task is also well known as Structure-from-Motion (SfM), which reveals that image pose, while positions of object points are determined interdependently. Despite a lot of efforts over the last decades, it has recently gained the photogrammetrists’ interests again due to the fast-growing number of different resources of images. New challenges are posed for accurately and efficiently orienting various image datasets (e.g., unordered datasets with a large number of images, or images compromised of critical stereo pairs). In this thesis, the relevant ambition is to develop a new fast and robust method for the estimation of image orientation which is capable of coping with different types of datasets. To achieve this goal, the two most time-consuming steps of image orientation are in particular taken care of: (a) image matching and (b) the estimation process. To accelerate the image matching process, a new method employing a random k-d forest is proposed to quickly obtain pairs of overlapping images from an unordered image set. After that, image matching and the estimation of relative orientation parameters are performed only for pairs found to be very likely overlapping. On the other hand, to estimate the image poses in a time efficient manner, a global image orientation strategy is advocated. Its basic idea is to first simultaneously solve all available images’ poses, before a final bundle adjustment is carried out once for refinement. The conventional two-step global approach is pursued in this work, separating the determination of rotation matrices and translation parameters; the former is solved by an existing popular method of Chatterjee and Govindu [2013], and the latter are estimated globally using a newly developed method: translation estimation integrating both the relative translations and tie points. Tie points within triplets are adopted to firstly calculate global unified scale factors for each available pairwise relative translation. Then, analogous to rotation estimation, translations are determined by performing an averaging operation on the scaled relative translations. In order to improve the robustness of the solution, efforts in this thesis are also focused on coping with outliers in the relative orientations (ROs), which global image orientation approaches are particularly sensitive to. A general method based on triplet compatibility with respect to loop closure errors of relative rotations and translations is presented for detecting blunders in relative orientations. Although this procedure eliminated many gross errors in the input ROs, it typically cannot sort out blunders which are caused by repetitive structures and critical configurations, such as inappropriate baselines (very short baseline or baselines parallel to the viewing direction). Therefore, another new method is proposed to eliminate wrong ROs which have resulted from repetitive structures and very short baselines. Two corresponding criteria that indicate the quality of ROs are introduced. Repetitive structure is detected based on counts of conjugate points of the various image pairs, while very short baselines are found by inspecting the intersection angles of corresponding image rays. By analyzing these two criteria, incorrect ROs are detected and eliminated. As correct ROs of image pairs with a wider baseline nearly parallel to both viewing directions can be valuable, a method to identify and keep these ROs is also a part of this research. The validation and evaluation of the proposed method are thoroughly conducted on various benchmarks including ordered and unordered sets of images, images with repetitive structures and inappropriate baselines, etc. In particular, robustness is investigated by demonstrating the efficacy of the corresponding RO outlier detection methods. The performance and time efficiency of determining image orientation are evaluated and compared with several state-of-the-art global image orientation approaches. In summary, based on the experimental results, the developed methods demonstrateto be able to accomplish the image orientation taskfast and robustlyon different kinds of datasets. [Termes IGN] résiduRésumé : (auteur) Detection and quantification of sea level accelerations at tide gauge stations are needed for assessing anthropogenic contributions to the climate change. Nonetheless, uniform or non-uniform sea level accelerations/decelerations are particularly difficult to discern partly because of their small magnitudes and partly because of the low frequency sea level variations as confounders. Moreover, noisy excursions in the observed sea level variations also exacerbate reliability of estimated sea level accelerations. This study explores the uniformity of a sea level acceleration graphically that is left unmodeled in the residuals of a least squares solution using cumulative sum charts. Key West, USA tide gauge station’s record is studied for a demonstration. The cumulative sum charts of the residuals of a rigorous kinematic model solution without the acceleration parameter revealed its crisp and uniform signature experienced at this station since 1913. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (auteur) A regular network of squares is formed by points uniformly distributed (mostly in the square corners) over the surface that is represented by the network. Each point (node) of the network has specified coordinates (X and Y) with a fixed constant distance between them. The third coordinate in a node (H) is determined by the application of interpolation based on the points distributed (usually dispersed as a point cloud e.g., from LiDAR) over the surface of the area surrounding the node. The regular network of squares formed in this manner allows the representation of a digital terrain model (DTM) to be performed in spatial information systems (SIP, GIS). The main problem that arises during the construction of such a network is the proper determination of its resolution (the base distance between the coordinates X and Y) depending on the topography. This article presents a method of the regular network of squares resolution determination depending on the morphological shape of the terrain surface. Following the application of the procedures being described, a differently shaped terrain is assigned various network densities. This enables the minimisation of inaccuracies of the surface model being formed. Consequently, a regular network of squares is formed with different base square sizes, which is adjusted with its resolution to the morphology of the surface it describes. Such operations allow the terrain model accuracy to be maintained over the entire area while reducing the number of points stored in the DTM database to the minimum.
