[Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Quantitative classification of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM and ETM +) imagery can provide a very useful medium for showing urban change at a watershed scale. It shows both the nature and the degree of urbanization with a resolution equivalent to that of the original TM image. Estimates of urbanization-related factors such as surface imperviousness and canopy cover can be coupled to illustrate the process of urban growth in the watershed using change vector analysis. When used together and combined with standard GIS data sets such as digital line graphs and digital elevation models. Quantitative classification can provide the parameters needed to run standard hydrological models that can be used to describe or to forecast the effects of urbanization on area streams. Watersheds provide a meaningful scale for the analysis of the connections between urbanization and the environmental changes it brings. The study area for this paper is the Tinker's Creek watershed in northeast Ohio, USA. Tinker's Creek is one of the largest and most varied watersheds in the area, and it is subject to significant urbanization stress. Urbanization in the watershed is reflected in four TM images of northeast Ohio over a 15 year period (1984-1999). Quantitative classification provides a rich and detailed picture of urbanization over the time period of the study. [Termes IGN] rayonnement solaireRésumé : (Auteur) The urban heat-island effect occurs as a result of increased sensible heat flux from the land surface to the atmosphere near cities. Sensible heat flux consists of two components: exhausted anthropogenic heat, and heat radiation due to solar input. The latter may be enhanced by changes in the usage of artificial land surface. The authors have developed a new method to separate the anthropogenically discharged heat and natural heat radiation from the sensible heat flux, based on a heat-balance model using satellite remote sensing and ground meteorological data. This method was applied to ASTER and ETM+ data for the daytime during spring, summer and winter and for the nighttime during autumn in Nagoya, Japan. The increased sensible heat flux was approximately 100 W/m2 in the central part of the city during the summer. Sensible heat flux at night during autumn was approximately 0 W/m2 except in urban areas and over bodies of water. During the winter, anthropogenic heat accounted for almost all of the sensible heat flux in urban areas. The contribution of anthropogenic heat to sensible heat flux in spring was lower than the contributions in summer and winter. The anthropogenic heat flux was high in industrial areas throughout the year. These results are consistent with the fact that anthropogenic energy consumption is high in summer and winter and low in spring and autumn. [Termes IGN] méthode de Monte-CarloRésumé : (Auteur) The number of training samples per class (n) required for accurate Maximum Likelihood (ML) classification is known to be affected by the number of bands (p) in the input image. However, the general rule which defines that n should be 10p to 30p is often enforced universally in remote sensing without questioning its relevance to the complexity of the specific discrimination problem. Furthermore, identifying this many training samples is often problematic when many classes and/or many bands are used. It is important, then, to test how this generally accepted rule matches common remote sensing discrimination problems because it could be unnecessarily restrictive for many applications. This study was primarily conducted in order to test whether the general rule defining the relationship between n and p was well-suited for ML classification of a relatively simple remote sensing-based discrimination problem. To summarise the mean response of n-to-p for our study site, a Monte Carlo procedure was used to randomly stack various numbers of bands into thousands of separate image combinations that were then classified using an ML algorithm. The bands were randomly selected from a 119-band Enhanced Thematic Mapper-plus (ETM+) dataset comprised of 17 images acquired during the 2001-2002 southern hemisphere summer agricultural growing season over an irrigation area in south-eastern Australia. Results showed that the number of training samples needed for accurate ML classification was much lower than the current widely accepted rule. Due to the asymptotic nature of the relationship, we found that 95% of the accuracy attained using n = 30p samples could be achieved by using approximately 2p to 4p samples, or Numéro de notice : A2005-434 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.rse.2005.08.011 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2005.08.011 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27570
