[Termes IGN] sécheresseRésumé : (Auteur) It is important to estimate land surface evapotranspiration (ET) for water resources evaluation, drought monitoring and crop production simulation. In this paper, a relationship between annual ET, integrated Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Relative Moisture Index (RMI) was established. Based on this relationship, the spatial distribution and dynamic change of annual ET were estimated for the Yellow River Basin, China from 1982 to 2000. Our analyses involved the use of integrated NDVI data, monthly mean air temperature, and precipitation. Our results showed that the integrated AVHRR NDVI can be used to effectively estimate annual ET in the Yellow River Basin, with an accuracy over 90% for the whole basin. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Preservation of cultivated land is one of China's four basic strategic policies. Timely land use monitoring is a prerequisite of cultivated land management and sustainable utilization. Using digital satellite remote sensing techniques, the intention is to develop a workable procedure for cultivated land change detection in the Yellow River delta region. Four detection methods were assessed. The assessment, in general, suggests that it is difficult to find a single efficient method for cultivated land change detection in the study area, where spectral confusion is widespread due to soil salinization and juxtaposed land use patterns. The knowledge-based visual change detection and classification-result overlay methods are more appropriate than the multi-temporal composite and classification, and image ratioing. The latter two methods are useful and efficient when remote sensing data acquired in the suitable season are available, and distinct spectral characteristics of different land use types exist. The results show that the area of cultivated land in this region decreased by 5321.8 ha over the period 1987 to 1998, i.e. 483.8ha every year, mainly concentrated in the central paddy field region and northeast dry land region. [Termes IGN] Wyoming (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Visualization techniques have been developed to recreate natural landscapes, but little has been done to investigate their potential for illustrating land cover change using spatio-temporal data. In this work, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and visualization techniques were applied to generate realistic computer visualizations depicting the dynamic nature of forested environments. High resolution digital imagery and aerial photography were classified using object-oriented methods. . The resulting classifications, along with preexisting land cover datasets, were used to drive the correct placement of vegetation in the visualized landscape, providing an accurate representation of reality at various points in time. 3D Nature's Visual Nature Studio was used to construct a variety of realistic images and animations depicting forest cover change in two distinct ecological settings. Visualizations from Yellowstone National Park focused on the dramatic impact of the 1988 fire upon the lodgepole pine forest. For a study area in Kansas, visualization techniques were used to explore the continuous human-land interactions impacting the eastern deciduous. forest and tallgrass prairie ecotone between 1941 and 2002. The resulting products demonstrate the flexibility and effectiveness of visualizations for representing spatio-temporal patterns such as changing forest cover. These geographic visualizations allow users to communicate findings and explore new hypotheses in a clear, concise and effective manner. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) One important aspect in the management of the environment and its resources is establishing the spatial extent and the dynamics of changes in land cover and land use over time. This paper proposes a methodology for monitoring land cover change in coastal zones, specifically coastal mangrove wetlands. The approach was inspired by the availability of aerial photographs at several epochs and their high spatial resolution and geometric stability. The topographic features of coastal zones justify relaxing the rigorous and complicated procedure of photogrammetric orientation, while still achieving an adequate reliability and accuracy. The methodology developed in this paper is followed by a case study evaluating the validity and applicability of this technique in assessing changes in coastal mangrove forests.
