[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Currently, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities, which leads to major changes in land use and land surface temperature (LST). The associated urban heat island (UHI) effects have multiple impacts on energy consumption and human health. A better understanding of how different land covers affect LST is necessary for mitigating adverse impacts, and supporting urban planning and public health management. This study explores a distance-based, a grid-based and a point-based analysis to investigate the influence of impervious surfaces, green area and waterbodies on LST, from large (distance and grid based analysis with 400 m grids) to smaller (point based analysis with 30 m grids) scale in the two mid-latitude cities of Paris and Geneva. The results at large scale confirm that the highest LST was observed in the city centers. A significantly positive correlation was observed between LST and impervious surface density. An anticorrelation between LST and green area density was observed in Paris. The spatial lag model was used to explore the spatial correlation among LST, NDBI, NDVI and MNDWI on a smaller scale. Inverse correlations between LST and NDVI and MNDWI, respectively, were observed. We conclude that waterbodies display the greatest mitigation on LST and UHI effects both on the large and smaller scale. Green areas play an important role in cooling effects on the smaller scale. An increase of evenly distributed green area and waterbodies in urban areas is suggested to lower LST and mitigate UHI effects. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Forested wetlands (FWs) are economically and environmentally important, so monitoring of change is done using remote sensing by several U.S. federal programs. To better understand classification and delineation uncertainties in FW maps, we assessed agreement between National Wetlands Inventory maps based on aerial photography and field determinations at over 16 000 Forest Inventory and Analysis plots. Analyses included evaluation of temporal differences and spatial uncertainty in plot locations and wetland boundaries. User's accuracy for the wetlands map was 90% for FW and 68% for nonforested wetlands. High levels of false negatives were observed, with less than 40% of field-identified wetland plots mapped as such. Epsilon band analysis indicated that if delineation of FW boundaries in the southeastern U.S. met the data quality standards (5 meters), then the area within uncertainty bounds accounts for 15% to 30% of estimated FW area. [Termes IGN] taxinomieRésumé : (auteur) Even though many studies have shown the usefulness of clustering for the exploration of spatio-temporal patterns, until now there is no systematic description of clustering methods for geo-referenced time series (GTS) classified as one-way clustering, co-clustering and tri-clustering methods. Moreover, the selection of a suitable clustering method for a given dataset and task remains to be a challenge. Therefore, we present an overview of existing clustering methods for GTS, using the aforementioned classification, and compare different methods to provide suggestions for the selection of appropriate methods. For this purpose, we define a taxonomy of clustering-related geographical questions and compare the clustering methods by using representative algorithms and a case study dataset. Our results indicate that tri-clustering methods are more powerful in exploring complex patterns at the cost of additional computational effort, whereas one-way clustering and co-clustering methods yield less complex patterns and require less running time. However, the selection of the most suitable method should depend on the data type, research questions, computational complexity, and the availability of the methods. Finally, the described classification can include novel clustering methods, thereby enabling the exploration of more complex spatio-temporal patterns. [Termes IGN] Tsinghai (Chine)Résumé : (auteur) Inferring the geometry and evolution of an earthquake sequence is crucial to understand how fault systems are segmented and interact. However, structural geological models are often poorly constrained in remote areas and fault inference is an ill-posed problem with a reliability that depends on many factors. Here, we investigate the geometry of the Mw 6.3 2008 and 2009 Qaidam earthquakes, in northeast Tibet, by combining InSAR time series and teleseismic data. We conduct a multi-array back-projection analysis from broadband teleseismic data and process three overlapping Envisat tracks covering the two earthquakes to extract the spatio-temporal evolution of seismic ruptures. We then integrate both geodetic and seismological data into a self-consistent kinematic model of the earthquake sequence. Our results constrain the depth and along-strike segmentation of the thrust-faulting sequence. The 2008 earthquake ruptured a ∼32° north-dipping fault that roots under the Olongbulak pop-up structure at ∼12 km depth and fault slip evolved post-seismically in a downdip direction. The 2009 earthquake ruptured three south-dipping high-angle thrusts and propagated from ∼9 km depth to the surface and bilaterally along the south-dipping segmented 55–75° high-angle faults of the Olonbulak pop-up structure that displace basin deformed sedimentary sequences above Paleozoic bedrock. Our analysis reveals that the inclusion of the post-seismic afterslip into modelling is beneficial in the determination of fault geometry, while teleseismic back-projection appears to be a robust tool for identifying rupture segmentation for moderate-sized earthquakes. These findings support the hypothesis that the Qilian Shan is expanding southward along a low-angle décollement that partitions the oblique convergence along multiple flower and pop-up structures. When mining regional patterns, the use of a spatial relationship that is determined without considering the spatial correlation among geographical objects can lead to problematic results, e.g. mistakenly treating unrelated objects as adjacent. Additionally, traditional prevalence measures are unstable for uneven datasets such as LULC, wherein some land-use change types show small numbers and uneven quantities, and valuable rules for some land-use categories may be ignored. Therefore, we proposed a regional pattern mining method. First, we developed adaptive adjacent criteria, which can be automatically generated for each specific zone to define adjacency for better spatial-temporal mining. Then, a combinational decision model was built to improve the stability of the prevalence measure, which was used to filter out the insignificant spatial-temporal rules. Furthermore, we proposed two levels of land-use pattern mining, i.e. cluster-level mining and polygon-level mining, to first discover hot-spot areas where similar land-use change has occurred frequently and then to determine the location, frequency, and change time of rules related to different land-use activities. The proposed method was used for mining the dependence of land use and regional patterns on land-use changes. Results show that the proposed method can determine the spatial dependence between the land-use categories, as well as regional patterns of land-use changes. According to our research, the study area, Xinbei District, China, is undergoing land-use change involving rapid urbanization, extensive transportation construction, and losses of farmland.
