[Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate estimations of spatio-temporal fields at unsampled locations are important in a number of applications. Often, spatio-temporal fields are advected, which means the change in field values over time at a particular point in space stems to a large extent from motion of a more or less constant spatial field. For such dynamic fields, interpolation methods including information on the motion behaviour of the field are promising extensions of solely spatial (snapshot) and symmetric spatio-temporal methods. In this paper, the performance of different deterministic and geostatistical interpolation methods is compared for precipitation estimation from 1-minute time series of spatially distributed rain gauges. The focus is on spatio-temporal methods that include information on the motion behaviour of the rainfield, estimated from weather radar using optical flow. The different interpolation methods are introduced and evaluated using rain gauge measurements of a 15-day period and cross-validation. The results show that including information on the motion behaviour significantly improves interpolation quality in terms of RMSE. [Termes IGN] extension temporelleMots-clés libres : T-pattern analysis STempo Résumé : (Auteur) Pattern analysis techniques currently common within geography tend to focus either on characterizing patterns of spatial and/or temporal recurrence of a single event type (e.g., incidence of flu cases) or on comparing sequences of a limited number of event types where relationships between events are already represented in the data (e.g., movement patterns). The availability of large amounts of multivariate spatiotemporal data, however, requires new methods for pattern analysis. Here, we present a technique for finding associations among many different event types where the associations among these varying event types are not explicitly represented in the data or known in advance. This pattern discovery method, known as T-pattern analysis, was first developed within the field of psychology for the purpose of finding patterns in personal interactions. We have adapted and extended the T-pattern method to take the unique characteristics of geographic data into account and implemented it within a geovisualization toolkit for an integrated computational-geovisual environment we call STempo. To demonstrate how T-pattern analysis can be employed in geographic research for discovering patterns in complex spatiotemporal data, we describe a case study featuring events from news reports about Yemen during the Arab Spring of 2011–2012. Using supplementary data from the Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone, we briefly summarize and reference a separate validation study, then evaluate the scalability of the T-pattern approach. We conclude with ideas for further extensions of the T-pattern technique to increase its utility for spatiotemporal analysis. [Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Industrial forest plantation expansion is dramatically impacting the environment (biodiversity, soil, water, etc.) and social sphere. Since the enactment of Decree Law 701 (DL 701) in 1974 under the military government of Augusto Pinochet, forestry practices in Chile have become more intensive (genetic manipulation, high yield clearcutting and short rotation). The law (and its successive updates) covers up to 75% of plantation costs and is the keystone of pine and eucalyptus forest expansion. This paper presents a pluriannual detection model for monitoring and characterizing the high cutting frequency of these timber plantations. Thirteen Landsat and SPOT images taken between 1976 and 2008 are used and combined with ground data (oblique aerial photography, GPS field surveys and field sheets). A trichromatic composition is built from spectral information taken from a Red and Mid-Infrared (MIR) wavelength along a temporal gradient of 32 years. This multi-temporal on-screen visual interpretation has led to a dynamic interpretation grid which reflects forest management stages in direct relation with pine and eucalyptus crop cycles. The method was tested on various time-steps covering the entire time period on two spatial scales — local and regional. All the spatio-temporal results are conclusive and the model established by remote sensing is of operational value.
