[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Accurate alignment of 3D models is critical for valid change‐detection analysis from multitemporal photogrammetric datasets. This paper assesses an automated registration strategy which uses the scale‐invariant feature transform (SIFT) algorithm implemented in modern photogrammetric software. This registration solution, also known as “Time‐SIFT”, was tested at two study sites featuring vertical surfaces, including a sea cliff (~500 m2) and a quarry face (~50 000 m2). Tests demonstrated that the investigated registration strategy can achieve accurate alignments between multitemporal point clouds even when using multisource and multi‐perspective data, captured across widely varying spatial and temporal scales and under a range of weather and illumination conditions. The combination of the Time‐SIFT approach with an ICP algorithm produced moderate improvements in the alignment. Furthermore, the use of an innovative direct georeferencing technique, which used the tracking feature of a robotic total station, allowed for accurate georectification of 3D models. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (auteur) Interaction between land subsidence and sea level rise (SLR) increases the hazard in coastal areas, mainly for deltas, characterized by flat topography and with great social, ecological, and economic value. Coastal areas need continuous monitoring as a support for human intervention to reduce the hazard. Po River Delta (PRD, northern Italy) in the past was affected by high values of artificial land subsidence: even if at low rates, anthropogenic settlements are currently still in progress and produce an increase of hydraulic risk due to the loss of surface elevation both of ground and levees. Many authors have provided scenarios for the next decades with increased flooding in densely populated areas. In this work, a contribution to the understanding future scenarios based on the morphological changes that occurred in the last century on the PRD coastal area is provided: planimetric variations are reconstructed using two archival cartographies (1911 and 1924), 12 multi-temporal high-resolution aerial photogrammetric surveys (1933, 1944, 1949, 1955, 1962, 1969, 1977, 1983, 1990, 1999, 2008, and 2014), and four LiDAR (light detection and ranging) datasets (acquired in 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2018): obtained results, in terms of emerged surfaces variations, are linked to the available land subsidence rates (provided by leveling, GPS—global positioning system, and SAR—synthetic aperture radar data) and to the expected SLR values, to perform scenarios of the area by 2100: results of this work will be useful to mitigate the hazard by increasing defense systems and preventing the risk of widespread flooding. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Australia is one of the world’s largest producers of macadamia nuts. As macadamia trees can take up to 15 years to mature and produce maximum yield, it is important to optimize tree condition. Field based assessment of macadamia tree condition is time-consuming and often inconsistent. Using remotely sensed imagery may allow for faster, more extensive, and more consistent assessment of macadamia tree condition. To identify individual macadamia tree crowns, high spatial resolution imagery is required. Hence, the objective of this work was to develop and test an approach to map the condition of individual macadamia tree crowns using both multi-spectral Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and WorldView-3 imagery for different macadamia varieties and three different sites located near Bundaberg, Australia. A random forest classifier, based on all available spectral bands and selected vegetation indices was used to predict five condition categories, ranging from excellent (category 1) to poor (category 5). Various combinations of the developed models were tested between the three sites and over time. The results showed that the multi-spectral WorldView-3 imagery produced the lowest out of bag (OOB) classification errors in most cases. However, for both the UAV and the WorldView-3 imagery, more than 98.5% of predicted macadamia condition categories were either correctly mapped or offset by a single category out of the five condition categories (excellent, good, moderate, fair and poor) for trees of the same variety and at one point in time. Multi-temporally, the WorldView-3 imagery performed better than the UAV data for predicting the condition of the same macadamia tree variety. Applying a model from one site to another site with the same macadamia tree variety produced OOB classification between 31.20 and 42.74%, but with >98.63% of trees predicted within a single condition category. Importantly, models trained based on one type of macadamia tree variety could not be successfully applied to a site with another variety. The developed classification models may be used as a decision and management support tool for the macadamia industry to inform management practices and improve on-demand irrigation, fertilization, and pest inspection at the individual tree level. [Termes IGN] salinitéRésumé : (Auteur) To mitigate instantaneously evolving biases in satellite retrievals, a stochastic approach is applied over West Africa. This stochastic approach independently self-corrects Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) wet biases, unlike the cumulative density function (CDF) matching that rescales satellite retrievals with respect to several years of reference data. Ranked probability skill score (RPSS) is used as nonlocal root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) to assess stochastic retrievals. Stochastic method successfully decreases RMSEs from 0.146 m3/m3 to 0.056 m3/m3 in the Republic of Benin and from 0.080 m3/m3 to 0.038 m3/m3 in Niger, while the CDF matching method exacerbates the original SMOS biases up to 0.141 m3/m3 in Niger, and 0.120 m3/m3 in Benin. Unlike the CDF matching or European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Re-Analysis (ERA))–interim soil moisture, only a stochastic retrieval responds to Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission rainfall. Based on the effects of bias correction, RPSS is suggested as a nonlocal verification without needing local measurements.
