[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) A spatiotemporal point distribution is a set of points defined by the combination of a spatial region and a time period. It is used for representing a set of discrete events, such as traffic accidents, and a set of points that characterize line and polygon objects such as the turning points of insect movement. Analysis of a spatiotemporal point distribution is more difficult than an ordinary spatial point distribution because it has to be treated in a three or fourdimensional spatiotemporal region, where data visualization and analysis have not been fully explored. This paper proposes a new method for representing the spatiotemporal point distribution, which is useful for exploratory analysis. The method summarizes the information extracted from the point distribution, and thus helps us find important and interesting patterns in the distribution. It consists of two steps: conversion of a spatiotemporal point distribution into a surface, and graphic representation of the surface. Along with a theoretical description of the method, technical details including a computational algorithm are discussed. To test the validity of the method, an expansion of convenience stores in Tokyo, Japan, is analyzed. [Termes IGN] théorie de la connaissanceRésumé : (Auteur) Recent advances in information technology have enabled scientists to generate unprecedented amounts of earth-related data, with tremendous potential for dealing with pressing social, economic, and environmental issues. Yet the volume and heterogeneity of available data clearly overwhelm traditional analytical approaches, as well as the human capacity to derive patterns and useful insights. This book examines how geospatial knowledge can be analyzed and represented in a manner that not only is accurate and coherent, but also makes intuitive sense to the end user. Concepts from a range of disciplines are integrated to explore the processes by which people acquire, represent, and utilize spatiotemporal knowledge. Arguing that the human user and the computer must be viewed as interrelated components of a single system, the book provides principles and recommendations for improving the design of geographic information systems (GIS) and other geospatial modeling tools. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this work is to develop a dynamic geographical information system (DGIS) applicable for the simulation of spatio-temporal phenomena. DGIS is designed and implemented as a dynamic raster GIS in a fully integrated systems strategy using theory of modelling and simulation, discrete event systems specifications, and knowledge-based simulation methodologies. The approach accommodates the representations and operators of current GIS in a broader systems representation scheme that includes the constructs for handling continuous time, model base, multiple resolution, hierarchy, taxonomy, variable structure, and intelligent agents. DGIS is defined as an endomorphic system that can be transformed by the user into different, application-specific, spatial dynamic simulation environments depending on the models selected to fit the various aspects of its structure. In this paper we describe the theory, methods, and technologies upon which the system is designed and implemented and discuss how it can support complex spatial simulations. To probe operational applicability, an instance of DGIS is generated: a fire spread simulation environment, which is tested in the simulation of 15 real fire events.
