[Termes IGN] invariantRésumé : (Auteur) The Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) has provided fine spatial resolution data spanning two decades. These data are useful for long-term studies of environmental change. However, temporal factors such as sensor degradation, variation in Sun–target–satellite geometry, and variable atmospheric conditions can create inconsistencies in multi-temporal images and complicate data analysis. This study investigated temporal influences on satellite data. The methodology was developed based on a theoretically derived relationship between pixel values of pseudo-invariant features (PIFs) across time. The relationship was validated using multi-temporal Landsat-5 TM images, which showed that temporal factors contribute to PIF pixel values in both multiplicative and additive ways. For Landsat-5 TM level-0 data, temporal influences were simulated in terms of multiplicative and additive components. The results showed that atmospheric variation is the most influential factor, followed by variation in the Sun–target–satellite geometry and TM sensor degradation. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) For monitoring environmental changes, new digital remote sensors have become available that allow monitoring and change detection analyses at resolutions and scales that were deemed impossible just a few years ago. The advent of airborne stereo scanners of ultra high spatial resolution offers the possibility of a complete digital remote sensing processing System. Current sensors include the High-resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), the ADS-40, and the Digital Mapping Camera (DMC). For automated analysis, however, the new sensors require also new processing techniques. This paper presents results of change monitoring analyses for areas along the shorelines of the Elbe and Weser rivers in North Germany using integrated HRSC and GIS datasets. An automated procedure for highly accurate mapping was developed which is based on a hierarchical stepwise approach integrating GIS methods and digital surface information in this process. This approach allows the production of GIS maps that are more detailed and accurate than those that were previously produced by conventional means. Within the GIS environment, the multitemporal analysis also allows the exact quantification and location of changes of the protected biotope types. [Termes IGN] tectoniqueRésumé : (Auteur) Well-documented geological data (from both field and satellite) in the Deccan Volcanic Provinces (DVP) in and around the Dalvat region, Nasik District, India has been analysed by Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques and reported in this paper so as to relate the geology and structures with recent seismicity. It has been the belief among earth scientists that the Deccan Traps in Maharashtra, India is tectonically stable as the region attained solidity long ago. However, recent activity in the study area altered this concept and it is now accepted that seismic activity is still continuing on a mild scale. As such, the need has arisen to take into consideration historical as well as recent geological data to study in detail the tectonic setup in the Deccan Traps.
Using the well-known relationship between the shear zone, lineaments, and geomorphology, and incorporating these with tectonic events, an attempt has been made to explore the geology and structures in and around the Dalvat region. Field observations and signatures on remote sensing data show that there is evidence of fault traces in the form of shear zones and slickensides in the Deccan Traps near the Kosurde, Dhanoli, Chikhli, and Manchandar villages of the Nasik District. The study has further been incorporated with seismic density data. Magnitudes of 3.9 were recorded as the maximum micro-epicentres, and they fell on the shear fractures detected in the area of study.
In order to identify seismically vulnerable areas, seismic hazard zonation (SHZ) mapping has been carried out. Different data layers, including structural, lithological, geomorphological, drainage, and soil have been visually interpreted, scanned, and rectified. A rose diagram of the lineaments shows trends in the NNE–SSW to NS falling on major seismic zones of the study area, showing weaker zones beneath the surface. Raster images were digitized for conversion to a vector coverage using ERDAS 8.6. and ArcGIS 8.3. The ordinal scale (qualitative) relative weighting rating technique was used to give a seismic hazard index (SHI) value to delineate various seismic hazard zones; namely very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. [Termes IGN] reconstruction d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The frequent presence of clouds in passive remotely sensed imagery severely limits its regular exploitation in various application fields. Thus, the removal of cloud cover from this imagery represents an important preprocessing task consisting in the reconstruction of cloud-contaminated data. The intent of this study is to propose two novel general methods for the reconstruction of areas obscured by clouds in a sequence of multitemporal multispectral images. Given a cloud-contaminated image of the sequence, each area of missing measurements is reconstructed through an unsupervised contextual prediction process that reproduces the local spectro-temporal relationships between the considered image and an opportunely selected subset of the remaining temporal images. In the first method, the contextual prediction process is implemented by means of an ensemble of linear predictors, each trained over a local multitemporal region that is spectrally homogeneous in each temporal image of the selected subset. In order to obtain such regions, each temporal image is locally classified by an unsupervised classifier based on the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. In the second method, the local spectro-temporal relationships are reproduced by a single nonlinear predictor based on the support vector machines (SVM) approach. To illustrate the performance of the two proposed methods, an experimental analysis on a sequence of three temporal images acquired by the Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus sensor over a total period of four months is reported and discussed. It includes a detailed simulation study that aims at assessing with different reconstruction quality criteria the accuracy of the methods in different qualitative and quantitative cloud contamination conditions. Compared with two techniques based on compositing algorithms for cloud removal, the proposed methods show a clear superiority, which makes them a promising and useful tool in solving the considered problem, whose great complexity is commensurate with its practical importance.
