[Termes IGN] subsidenceRésumé : (Auteur) Satellite radar interferometry can be used to spatially monitor small vertical ground deformations. When millimeter accuracy is required, the differential interferometry technique is hampered by the ambiguity with atmospheric artifacts. It is also often difficult to obtain a precise evaluation of the kinematic evolution of ground deformations from a set of time, randomly distributed interferograms. We present the results of a least-squares approach coupled with a temporal filtering and applied to a large data set over the City of Paris. The mean deformation rate and a map of areas affected by time, non-linear deformation events are presented. We show that this approach, which provides a chronologically ordered set of phase screens, allows the retrieval of the kinematic Parameters of ground deformations as low as 1 to 2 mm per year. Subsiding areas have been detected, and their evolution in time has been quantified. Such an approach can be useful to fully characterize the kinematic evolution of ground deformations in major cities or desertic areas where large areas have a high degree of coherence and where millimeter accuracy is often required. [Termes IGN] vision par ordinateurRésumé : (Auteur) Image registration is concerned with the problem of how to combine data and/to information from multiple sensors in order to achieve improved accuracies and better inference about the environment than could be attained through the use of a single sensor. Registration of imagery and/or information from multiple sources is essential for a variety of applications in remote sensing, medical diagnosis, computer vision, and pattern recognition. [Termes IGN] reconnaissance de formesRésumé : (Auteur) A novel system for the classification of multitemporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is presented. It has been developed by integrating an analysis of the multitemporal SAR signal physics with a pattern recognition approach. The system is made up of a feature-extraction module and a neural-network classifier, as well as a set of standard preprocessing procedures. The feature-extraction module derives a set of features from a series of multitemporal SAR images. These features are based on the concepts of long-term coherence and backscattering temporal variability and have been defined according to an analysis of the multitemporal SAR signal behavior in the presence of different land-cover classes. The neural-network classifier (which is based on a radial basis function neural architecture) properly exploits the multitemporal features for producing accurate land-cover maps. Thanks to the effectiveness of the extracted features, the number of measures that can be provided as input to the classifier is significantly smaller than the number of available multitemporal images. This reduces the complexity of the neural architecture (and consequently increases the generalization capabilities of the classifier) and relaxes the requirements relating to the number of training patterns to be used for classifier learning. Experimental results (obtained on a multitemporal series of European Remote Sensing 1 satellite SAR images) confirm the effectiveness of the proposed system, which exhibits both high classification accuracy and good stability versus parameter settings. These results also point out that properly integrating a pattern recognition procedure (based on machine learning) with an accurate feature extraction phase (based on the SAR sensor physics understanding) represents an effective approach to SAR data analysis. [Termes IGN] zone tempéréeRésumé : (Auteur) Temperate East Asia (TEA) is characterized by diverse land cover types, including forest and agricultural lands, one of the world's largest temperate grasslands, and extensive desert and barren landscapes. In this paper, we explored the potential of SPOT-4 VEGETATION (VGT) data for the classification of land cover types in TEA. An unsupervised classification was performed using multi-temporal (March November 2000) VGT-derived spectral indices (Land Surface Water Index [LSWI] and Enhanced Vegetation Index [EVI]) to generate a land cover map of TEA (called VGT-TEA). Land cover classes from VGT-TEA were aggregated to broad, general class types, and then compared and validated with classifications derived from fine-resolution (Landsat) data. VGT-TEA produced reasonable results when compared to the Landsat products. Analysis of the seasonal dynamics of LSWI and EVI allows for the identification of distinct growth patterns between different vegetation types. We suggest that LSWI seasonal curves can be used to define the growing season for temperate deciduous vegetation, including grassland types. Seasonal curves of EVI tend to have a slightly greater dynamic range than LSWI during the peak growing season and can be useful in discriminating between vegetation types. By using these two complementary spectral indices, VGT data can be used to produce timely and detailed land cover and phenology maps with limited ancillary data needed.
