[Termes IGN] spectroscopieRésumé : (Auteur) We identify canopy species in a Hawaiian tropical forest using supervised classification applied to airborne hyperspectral imagery acquired with the Carnegie Airborne Observatory-Alpha system. Nonparametric methods (linear and radial basis function support vector machine, artificial neural network, and k-nearest neighbor) and parametric methods (linear, quadratic, and regularized discriminant analysis) are compared for a range of species richness values and training sample sizes. We find a clear advantage in using regularized discriminant analysis, linear discriminant analysis, and support vector machines. No unique optimal classifier was found for all conditions tested, but we highlight the possibility of improving support vector machine classification with a better optimization of its free parameters. We also confirm that a combination of spectral and spatial information increases accuracy of species classification: we combine segmentation and species classification from regularized discriminant analysis to produce a map of the 17 discriminated species. Finally, we compare different methods to assess spectral separability and find a better ability of Bhattacharyya distance to assess separability within and among species. The results indicate that species mapping is tractable in tropical forests when using high-fidelity imaging spectroscopy. [Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of this study is to derive environmental factors that are likely to influence malarial distribution from Nigeriasat-1 in a geographical information systems (GIS) environment and relate it to the empirical evidence of reported malarial cases in the hospitals using discriminant analysis (DA) to characterize, identify and map malarial risk zones. It is found that using a stepwise DA, Nigeriasat-1 and GIS it is possible to classify the accurately the low malarial risk zone (100%), medium and high risk zones (83.33%), with an overall accuracy of 88.9% being achieved for the study area. The results obtained were in agreement with the ground validation exercise that was carried out and the cross validation method of ‘‘leaving-one-out’ in DA function. These findings indicate that Nigeriasat-1 and GIS combined with statistical technique of DA can be utilized as a decision support tool for a precise identification of the areas warranting mitigation efforts. [Termes IGN] Utah (Etas-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Urban areas serve as humanity's principal habitat. Because of this, it is important to understand the biophysical components of the urban environment – including the urban forest. The goal of this study was to determine the potential to classify individual urban trees as a function of spectral features derived from airborne hyperspectral data. To determine this, 500 urban trees were identified (through fieldwork) in the built-up zone of Provo-Orem, Utah, USA. Visible and near infrared airborne hyperspectral imagery was collected over the same area. The 500 trees were identified on the images, and spectral features of each tree were extracted. Principal components, vegetation indices, band means, and band ratios were all used as features to discriminate between different tree species. The tree classification was 82% accurate when just the six principal components were used. Classification accuracy increased to 91.4% after combining vegetation indices, band mean values and band ratios. Note de contenu : Introduction
