[Termes IGN] restauration d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) This paper develops a knowledge discovery procedure for extracting knowledge of soil-landscape models from a soil map. It has broad relevance to knowledge discovery from other natural resource maps. The procedure consists of four major steps: data preparation, data preprocessing, pattern extraction, and knowledge consolidation. In order to recover true expert knowledge from the error-prone soil maps, our study pays specific attention to the reduction of representation noise in soil maps. The data preprocessing step has exhibited an important role in obtaining greater accuracy. A specific method for sampling pixels based on modes of environmental histograms has proven to be effective in terms of reducing noise and constructing representative sample sets. Three inductive learning algorithms, the See5 decision tree algorithm, Naïve Bayes, and artificial neural network, are investigated for a comparison concerning learning accuracy and result comprehensibility. See5 proves to be an accurate method and produces the most comprehensible results, which are consistent with the rules (expert knowledge) used in producing the soil map. The incorporation of spatial information into the knowledge discovery process is found not only to improve the accuracy of the extracted knowledge, but also to add to the explicitness and extensiveness of the extracted soil-landscape model. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The wider uptake of GIS tools by many application areas outside GI science means that many newer users of GIS will have high-level knowledge of the wider task, and low-level knowledge of specific system commands as given in reference manuals. However, these newer users may not have the intermediate knowledge that experts in GI science have gained from working with GI systems over several years. Such intermediate knowledge includes an understanding of the assumptions implied by the use of certain functions, and an appreciation of how to combine functions appropriately to create a workflow that suits both the data and overall goals of the geographical analysis task. Focusing on the common but non-trivial task of interpolating spatial data, this paper considers how to help users gain the necessary knowledge to complete their task and minimise the possibility of methodological error. We observe that both infometric (or cognitive) knowledge and statistical knowledge are usually required to find a solution that jointly and efficiently meets the requirements of a particular user and data set. Using the class of interpolation methods as an example, we outline an approach that combines knowledge from multiple sources and argue the case for designing a prototype 'Intelligent' module that can sit between a user and a given GIS. The knowledge needed to assist with the task of interpolation is constructed as a network of rules, structured as a binary decision tree, that assist the user in selecting an appropriate method according to task-related knowledge (or 'purpose') and the characteristics of the data sets. The decision tree triggers exploratory diagnostics that are run on the data sets when a rule requires to be evaluated. Following evaluation of the rules, the user is advised which interpolation method might be and should not be considered for the data set. Any parameters required to interpolate the particular data set (e.g. a distance decay parameter for Inverse Distance Weighting) are also supplied through subsequent optimisation and model selection routines. The rationale of the decision process may be examined, so the 'Intelligent interpolator' also acts as a learning tool. In this thesis, the reconstruction of 3D building models from aerial images is addressed. The approach presented in this thesis integrates the aerial images analysis with information from a GIS database and domain knowledge.
The problem of automatic 3D building reconstruction has been a central research topic in computer vision and image understanding communities as well as in digital photogrammetry for many years. A variety of approaches has been suggested for the reconstruction of buildings from aerial images. Despite considerable research effort, there is no complete system that can reliably perform autonomous 3D building reconstruction in a wide variety of scene domains. This is particularly true in complex urban areas containing buildings with different shapes and roof types as well as in complicated underlying terrain. Of course, some progress has been made, but there is room for improvement. This improvement can be achieved by fusing multiple data sources and some a priori information.
In this project, largescale 2D GIS databases were used as additional information source. Combination of image data and map data turned out to improve the reliability of the reconstruction. Generic knowledge about the shape of the buildings is also incorporated in the system. Since most buildings can be described as an aggregation of simple building types, the knowledge about the problem domain can be represented in a building library containing simple building models. Therefore, a building library was defined containing the most common building primitives, such as flat roof, and different types of gable roofs.
The building reconstruction process was formulated as a multilevel hypothesis generation and verification scheme and it was implemented as a search tree. A method that can localize the buildings in images using map information has been developed. Also, a method for generating building hypotheses corresponding to the primitives defined in the building library has been developed. This implies stereo matching of image features (corners, lines) which correspond to map primitives and fitting of the building hypotheses to images.
A further contribution is the definition of a metric for evaluating the generated building hypotheses in order to select the one which best describes the image. The metric is based on the formulation of the mutual information between the building model and the images. Methods for the estimation of the mutual information from training samples were analyzed. This metric has been rigorously derived from information theory and does not require a priori information about the surface properties of the object and is robust with respect to variations of illumination. Also, no assumption about the shape of the objects are made. As result the method is quite general and may be used in a wide variety of applications.
The produced approach is able to meet most of the requirements of an automatic 3D building reconstruction system. The developed system has been used in urban and suburban areas to reconstruct buildings and showed good results. Experiments were carried out on two data sets with different characteristics. The system was able to reconstruct more than 80% of the buildings and the accuracy of the reconstruction is good enough for mapping purposes.
