[Termes IGN] photographie aérienneRésumé : (Auteur) A ca.1980 national-scale land-cover classification based on aerial photo interpretation was combined with 2000 AVHRR satellite imagery to derive land cover and land-cover change information for forest, urban, and agriculture categories over a seven-state region in the U.S.. To derive useful land-cover change data using a heterogeneous dataset and to validate our results, we a) stratified the classification using predefined ecoregions, b) developed statistical relationships by ecoregion between land-cover proportions derived from the 1980 national-level classification and aggregate statistical data that were available in times series for all regions in the U.S., c) classified multi-temporal AVHRR data using a process that constrained the results to the estimated proportions of land covers in ecoregions within a multi-objective land allocation (MOLA) procedure, d) interpreted land cover from a sample of a aerial photographs from 2000, following the protocols used to land-cover change results for the MOLA method with an unsupervised classification alone. Overall accuracies for the 2000 MOLA and unsupervised land-cover classifications were 85% and 82% respectively. On average, the 1980-2000 land-cover changes RMSEs were one order of magnitude lower using the MOLA methods compared with those based on the unsupervised data. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Unsupervised classification methodology applied to remote sensing image processing can provide benefits in automatically converting the raw image data into useful information so long as higher classification accuracy is achieved. The traditional k-means clustering scheme using spectral data alone does not perform well in general as far as accuracy is concerned. This is partly due to the failure to take the spatial inter-pixels dependencies (i.e. the context) into account, resulting in a 'busy' visual appearance to the output imagery. To address this, the hidden Markov models (HMM) are introduced in this study as a fundamental framework to incorporate both the spectral and contextual information in analysis. This helps generate more patch-like output imagery and produces higher classification accuracy in an unsupervised scheme. The newly developed unsupervised classification approach is based on observation-sequence and observation-density adjustments, which have been proposed for incorporating 2D spatial information into the linear HMM. For the observation-sequence adjustment methods, there are a total of five neighbourhood systems being proposed. Two neighbourhood systems were incorporated into the observation-density methods for study. The classification accuracy is then evaluated by means of confusion matrices made by randomly chosen test samples. The classification obtained by k-means clustering and the HMM with commonly seen strip-like and Hilbert-Peano sequence fitting methods were also measured. Experimental results showed that the proposed approaches for combining both the spectral and spatial information into HMM unsupervised classification mechanism present improvements in both classification accuracy and visual qualities. [Termes IGN] objet homogèneRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a method of unsupervised enhancement of pixels homogeneity in a local neighborhood. This mechanism will enable an unsupervised contextual classification of multispectral data that integrates the spectral and spatial information producing results that are more meaningful to the human analyst. This unsupervised classifier is an unsupervised development of the well-known supervised extraction and classification for homogenous objects (ECHO) classifier. One of its main characteristics is that it simplifies the retrieval process of spatial structures. This development is specially relevant for the new generation of airborne and spaceborne sensors with high spatial resolution. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Land-cover classification of satellite images is an important task in analysis of remote sensing imagery. Segmentation is one of the widely used techniques in this regard. One of the important approaches for segmentation of an image is by clustering the pixels in the spectral domain, where pixels that share some common spectral property are put in the same group, or cluster. However, such spectral clustering completely ignores the spatial information contained in the pixels, which is often an important consideration for good segmentation of images. Moreover, the clustering algorithms often provide locally optimal solutions. In this paper, we propose to perform. image segmentation by a genetically guided unsupervised fuzzy clustering technique where some spatial information of the pixels is incorporated. Two ways of incorporating spatial information are suggested. The characteristic of this technique is that it is able to determine automatically the appropriate number of clusters without making any assumptions regarding the dataset. while attempting to provide globally near optimal solutions. In order to evolve the appropriate number of clusters, the chromosome encoding scheme is enhanced to incorporate the don't care symbol (#). Real-coded genetic algorithm with appropriatly defined operators is used. A cluster validity index is used as a measure of the value of the chromosomes. Results, both quantitative and qualitative are demonstrated for several images, including a satellite image of a part of the city of Mumbai.
