[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) This research presents an integration of remote sensing and GIS for determining the runoff coefficient (C) recommended by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Water Pollution Control Federation in 1969. The C is a runoff index used as an input parameter in the most commonly used procedure: the rational method for storm-water runoff calculation in small urban watersheds for storm drainage design and analysis. The objective of this study was to evaluate 8-bit and 16-bit Quick-Bird (QB) NDVI satellite imagery using an unsupervised classification and the ISODATA algorithm to map impervious area and open space used for the determination of C in GIS spatial modeling. The research hypothesis was that mapping impervious area and open space using high spatial resolution NDVI satellite imagery, generated using the ISODATA algorithm, was an efficient and effective information extraction approach for accurately estimating spatial representative C values. The overall classification accuracies of the six QB NDVI thematic maps produced were similar, about 92 percent. In order to assess the utility of high spatial resolution satellite imagery and to validate the composite runoff index geographic model developed by Thanapura in 2005 and 2006, the C values were calculated in GIS spatial modeling and compared to the industry standard C. Finally, the hypothesis was accepted that the finer resolution image and mapping approach used in this study allowed for better discrimination of land-cover and thus a more accurate representative C estimation. The test site is a French Alpine protected area, which like many other mountain areas is characterised by a general increase of forest and woody vegetation due to the abandonment of traditional land use practices. Two Landsat images of the years 1984 and 2000 were used and a classification scheme nomenclature based on four vegetation change classes, implying a gradual modification of land cover, was adopted. The accuracy of the change map was assessed both during two visits on the field and using a bi-temporal aerial photographic coverage. A sampling scheme specifically conceived for change detection products was adopted. Error matrices and accuracy indices to assess commission and omission errors of the change maps were generated.
The proposed change detection methodology circumvents limitations which are intrinsic to traditional classification procedures based only on spectral information. On the basis of the accuracy assessment, overall accuracy was 90.1% and the increase of woody vegetation turned out to be the vegetation change class better estimated, with user and producer accuracies of, respectively, 62.3% and 70%. However, confusion between the no change and the other vegetation change classes was noticed, due to standard problems encountered in change studies. Advantages and drawbacks of the use of multitemporal aerial photographs as the validation data set are also discussed.Numéro de notice : A2007-649 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/01431160600851785 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/01431160600851785 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=73801

[Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of the present paper is to develop a new method for delineating lakes and enclosed islands from shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM). The Thousand-Island Lake in China is chosen as the study site. DEM may have missing values or be inaccurate over water bodies. Thus, it is not trivial to delineate the shorelines of lake directly from DEM. We achieve this objective by overlaying the boundary derived from the Landsat image of the same area. Unlike traditional water body delineation techniques, e.g. the band ratio method, which make use of physical quantities, we only use the colour information from Landsat ETM+ band 7, 4 and 2. The main reason is that the colour information is the only resource available for most publicly available satellite data such as the maps from Google Earth. Thus, it is necessary to develop a method depending on only colour information. In the Landsat image, a discrimination function to determine whether a pixel belongs to the lake area is obtained by studying sample pixels chosen from the lake area. The delineation of shorelines is an evolutionary process. The evolution equation is derived according to the active contour model and the discrimination function. The initial contour is inside the lake and expands according to the evolution equation. The evolving curve converges to the boundaries of the lake efficiently with a satisfactory result. Finally, the shorelines are overlaid on the DEM according to latitude and longitude. Our geodesic active contour method is a general one, and could be used to delineate objects of interest such as oil slicks and burn scars in satellite images. [Termes IGN] signature spectraleRésumé : (Auteur) Obtaining ground truth for classification of remotely sensed data is time consuming and expensive, resulting in poorly represented signatures over large areas. In addition, the spectral signatures of a given class vary with location and/or time. Therefore, successful adaptation of a classifier designed from the available labeled data to classify new hyperspectral images acquired over other geographic locations or subsequent times is difficult, if minimal additional labeled data are available. In this paper, the binary hierarchical classifier is used to propose a knowledge transfer framework that leverages the information extracted from the existing labeled data to classify spatially separate and multitemporal test data. Experimental results show that in the absence of any labeled data in the new area, the approach is better than a direct application of the original classifier on the new data. Moreover, when small amounts of the labeled data are available from the new area, the framework offers further improvements through semisupervised learning mechanisms and compares favorably with previously proposed methods.
