[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The monitoring of land use/land cover changes along the north part of the Nile delta, Egypt is very important for the planner, management, governmental and non-governmental organizations and the scientific community. This information is essential for planning and implementing policies to optimize the use of natural resources and accommodate development whilst minimizing the impact on the environment. To study these changes along the study area, two sets of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data were used. TM data are useful for this type of study due to its high spatial resolution, spectral resolution and low repetitive acquisition (16 days). A post-classification technique is used in this study based on hybrid classification (unsupervised and supervised). Each method used was assessed, and checked in field. Nine land use/land cover classes are produced. The overall accuracy for a 1984 image is 78% and for a 1997 image is 80%. The objective of this study was to detect land use/land cover changes, and to assess the nature of future change following construction of the international coastal road which crosses the study area. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) In the eastern Mediterranean, plate motions occur between the Arabia/Anatolia, Africa/Arabia and Anatolia/Africa boundaries along the Amanos Fault, the Dead Sea Fault and the Cyprus Arc, and the extension of the latter on land. Detailed enhancement and classification procedures applied to SPOT XS imagery of the Hatay region, and centred on the Quaternary Amik Basin, have revealed a prominent NE-SW-trending tectonic lineament. Recent seismicity suggests that this NE-SW-trending lineament dies out in the Quaternary Amik Basin in the east and continues to the Cyprus Arc to the south-west. Structural lineament extensions derived from SPOT XS imagery using linear edge enhancement and unsupervised classification methods and the distribution of seismicity in the Hatay region show that this region has been affected by the East Anatolian Fault Zone, the Dead Sea Fault Zone and the Cyprus-Antakya Transform fault. These fault associations accommodate northerly movement of the African and Arabian plates toward the Eurasian plate. The Amik Basin appears to have been formed by interaction among the Amanos Fault interpreted here as a continuation of the East Anatolian Fault the left-lateral Dead Sea Fault, and the left-lateral Cyprus-Antakya transform fault. Active faults belonging to the aforementioned structural zones meet one another to form a triple junction at the Amik Basin near Antakya. [Termes IGN] Pinus (genre)Résumé : (Auteur) Responding to an increasing interest in studying vegetation changes over time, we review current methods of processing black and white digital aerial photographs in order to classify tree cover in pinyon-juniper woodlands. Besides applying commonly used clustering and supervised maxim likelihood methods, we have developed a new classifier, nearest edge thresholding, which is unsupervised and based on the principals of edge detection and density slicing. Comparison of the three methods' abilities to predict field values at plot scales of 100 m2 to 900 m2 shows this new method is better or comparable to others at all scales, can be easily applied to digital imagery, and has high correspondence with ground-truthed field values of tree cover. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Preservation of cultivated land is one of China's four basic strategic policies. Timely land use monitoring is a prerequisite of cultivated land management and sustainable utilization. Using digital satellite remote sensing techniques, the intention is to develop a workable procedure for cultivated land change detection in the Yellow River delta region. Four detection methods were assessed. The assessment, in general, suggests that it is difficult to find a single efficient method for cultivated land change detection in the study area, where spectral confusion is widespread due to soil salinization and juxtaposed land use patterns. The knowledge-based visual change detection and classification-result overlay methods are more appropriate than the multi-temporal composite and classification, and image ratioing. The latter two methods are useful and efficient when remote sensing data acquired in the suitable season are available, and distinct spectral characteristics of different land use types exist. The results show that the area of cultivated land in this region decreased by 5321.8 ha over the period 1987 to 1998, i.e. 483.8ha every year, mainly concentrated in the central paddy field region and northeast dry land region.
