[Termes IGN] modèle mathématiqueRésumé : (auteur) Geographical phenomena fall into two categories: scaleful phenomena and scale-free phenomena. The former have characteristic scales, and the latter have no characteristic scale. Conventional quantitative and mathematical methods can only be applied effectively to scaleful geographical phenomena. In this article, a comparison between scaleful and scale-free geographical systems is drawn by means of simple geographical mathematical models. The main viewpoints are as below. First, scaleful phenomena can be researched by conventional mathematical methods, while scale-free phenomena should be studied using a theory based on scaling such as fractal geometry. Second, the scaleful phenomena belong to distance-based geo-space, while the scale-free phenomena belong to dimension-based geo-space. Third, four approaches to distinguish scale-free phenomena from scaleful phenomena are presented: scaling transform, probability distribution, autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation functions, and ht-index. In practice, a complex geographical system usually possesses scaleful aspects and scale-free aspects. Different methodologies must be adopted for different types of geographic systems or different aspects of the same geographic system. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Change detection in heterogeneous bitemporal satellite images has become an emerging, important, and challenging research topic in remote sensing for rapid damage assessment. In this article, we explore a new parametric mapping strategy based on a modified geometric fractal decomposition and a contractive mapping approach allowing us to project the before image on any after imaging modality type. This projection exploits the fact that any satellite image data can be approximatively encoded in terms of spatial self-similarities at different scales and this property remains quite invariant to a given imaging modality type. Once the projection is performed and that a pixelwise difference map between the two images (presented in the same imaging modality) is then binarized in the unsupervised Bayesian framework. At this stage, we will test several parameter estimation procedures combined with several segmentation strategies based on different Bayesian cost functions. The experiments for change detection, with real images showing different multimodalities and changed events, indicate that this new fractal-based projection method, which is entirely based on a series of structural and spatial information, is an interesting alternative to classical regression-based projection methods (based only on luminance transformation). Besides, the experiments also show that the difference map, resulting in this novel projection strategy, is also particularly amenable for an unsupervised Markovian binarization approach. [Termes IGN] regroupement de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Pedestrian networks play an important role in various applications, such as pedestrian navigation services and mobility modeling. This paper presents a novel method to extract pedestrian networks from crowdsourced tracking data based on a two-layer framework. This framework includes a walking pattern classification layer and a pedestrian network generation layer. In the first layer, we propose a multi-scale fractal dimension (MFD) algorithm in order to recognize the two different types of walking patterns: walking with a clear destination (WCD) or walking without a clear destination (WOCD). In the second layer, we generate the pedestrian network by combining the pedestrian regions and pedestrian paths. The pedestrian regions are extracted based on a modified connected component analysis (CCA) algorithm from the WOCD traces. We generate the pedestrian paths using a kernel density estimation (KDE)-based point clustering algorithm from the WCD traces. The pedestrian network generation results using two actual crowdsourced datasets show that the proposed method has good performance in both geometrical correctness and topological correctness.
