Existing literature mainly focuses on reconstruction from high-quality point clouds obtained by laser scanning which are too costly for many practical scenarios. This motivates the investigation into the problem of geometric approximation from low-budget image data. Dense reconstruction from a collection of images is made possible by recent advances in multi-view stereo techniques, yet the resulting point cloud is often far from perfect for generating a compact model. In particular, our goal is to describe the captured scene with a compact and accurate representation. In this thesis, we propose two generic algorithms which address different aspects of image-based geometric approximation. First, we present an algorithm for extracting and vectorizing objects in images with polygons. Second, we present a global registration algorithm from multi-modal geometric data, typically 3D point clouds and surface meshes. Both approaches exploit detection of linear geometric primitives to approximate either 2D silhouettes with polygons consisting of line segments, or 3D point sets with a collection of planar shapes. The proposed algorithms could be used sequentially to form a pipeline for geometric approximation of an urban object from a set of image data, consisting of an overhead shot for coarse model extraction and multi-view stereo data for point cloud generation. We demonstrate the robustness and scalability of our methods for structured scenes and objects, as well as applicative potential for free-form objects. Note de contenu : 1- Introduction

[Termes IGN] objet mobileRésumé : (auteur) Given the trajectories of one or several moving groups, we propose a new framework, the group diagram (GD) for representing these. Specifically, we seek a minimal GD as a concise representation of the groups maintaining the spatio-temporal structure of the groups’ movement. A GD is specified by three input values, namely a distance threshold, a similarity measure and a minimality criterion. For several variants of the GD, we give a comprehensive analysis of their computational complexity and present efficient approximation algorithms for their computation. Furthermore, we experimentally evaluate our algorithms on GPS data of migrating geese. Applying the proposed methods on these data sets reveals how the GD concisely represents the movement of the groups. This representation can be used for further analysis and for the formulation of new hypotheses for further ecological research, such as differences in movement patterns of groups on different surfaces or the shift of migration routes over several years. We use different similarity measures to summarize the migration routes of (i) a goose family for one migration period and to summarize (ii) the migration routes of one individual for several migration periods or (iii) the migration routes of several independent individuals for one migration period. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) The global approaches solve SfM problems by independently inferring relative motions, followed be a sequential estimation of global rotations and translations. It is a fast approach but not optimal because it relies only on pairs and triplets of images and it is not a joint optimisation. In this publication we present a methodology that increases the quality of global solutions without the usual computational burden tied to the bundle adjustment. We propose an efficient structure approximation approach that relies on relative motions known upfront. Using the approximated structure, we are capable of refining the initial poses at very low computational cost. Compared to different benchmark datasets and software solutions, our approach improves the processing times while maintaining good accuracy. [Termes IGN] surveillance agricoleRésumé : (auteur) Soil moisture content is an important parameter in hydrological, meteorological, and agricultural applications. Balenzano et al. proposed the alpha approximation method in 2011 for solving some complex issues during the retrieval of soil moisture over agricultural crops with synthetic aperture radar data. However, determining the constraints and solving the underdetermined system of equations in this method add new challenges. Considering the questions of constraints and underdetermined system of equations, the alpha approximation method is used to augment the measured data, and can avoid solving the underdetermined system of equations with constraints directly. Then, these data are applied in a support vector regression machine for soil moisture estimation. It is found that when an optimal model is determined, the method proposed in this article is superior to the direct use of the alpha approximation method, and the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) decreased from 0.0775 to 0.0339 and R 2 increased from 0.0467 to 0.6491. In addition, the method obtained a good result from a data set collected that included a different growing period of crops by changing the standardized method from StandardScaler to Scale , where the RMSE is 0.0501 and R 2 is 0.3204. This indicates the good generalization capability of this method. In conclusion, the proposed method solves the two questions effectively and provides a potential way for long-time or large-scale soil moisture monitoring with much less in situ measurements.
