[Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (Auteur) The most commonly used topographic vector data, the reference data of national geographic information systems (GIS) are currently two-dimensional. The topography is modelled by different objects which are represented by single points, lines and areas with additional attributes containing information, for instance on the function and size of the object. In contrast, a digital terrain model (DTM) in most cases is a 2.5D representation of the earth's surface. The integration of the two data sets leads to an augmentation of the dimension of the topographic objects. However, due to inconsistencies between the data the integration process may lead to semantically incorrect results. This paper presents a new approach for the integration of a DTM and 2D GIS vector data including the re-establishment of the semantic correctness of the integrated data set. The algorithm consists of two steps. In the first step the DTM and the topographic objects are integrated without considering the semantics of the objects. This geometric integration is based on a DTM TIN (triangular irregular network) computed using a constrained Delaunay triangulation. In the second step those objects which contain implicit height information are further utilized: object representations are formulated and the semantics of the objects are considered within an optimization process using equality and inequality constraints. The algorithm is based on an inequality constrained least squares adjustment formulated as the linear complementary problem (LCP). The algorithm results in an integrated semantically correct 2.5D GIS data set. Results are presented using simulated and real data. Lakes represented by horizontal planes with increasing terrain outside the lake and roads which are composed of several tilted planes were investigated. The algorithm shows satisfying results: the constraints are fulfilled and the visualization of the integrated data set corresponds to the human view of the topography. [Termes IGN] Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and ReferencingRésumé : (Auteur) The TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) system has served the U.S. Census Bureau and other agencies' geographic needs successfully for two decades. Poor positional accuracy has however made it extremely difficult to integrate TIGER with advanced technologies and data sources such as GPS, high resolution imagery, and state/local GIS data. In this paper, a potential solution for conflation of TIGER road centerline data with other geospatial data is presented. The first two steps of the approach (feature matching and map alignment) remain the same as in traditional conflation. Following these steps, a third is added in which active contour models (snakes) are used to automatically move the vertices of TIGER roads to high-accuracy roads, rather than transferring attributes between the two datasets. This approach has benefits over traditional conflation methodology. It overcomes the problem of splitting vector road line segments, and it can be extended for vector imagery conflation as well. Thus, a variety of data sources (GIS, GPS, and Remote Sensing) could be used to improve TIGER data. Preliminary test results indicate that the three-step approach proposed in this paper performs very well. The positional accuracy of TIGER road centerline can be improved from an original 100 plus meters' RMS error to only 3 meters. Such an improvement can make TIGER data more useful for much broader application. [Termes IGN] VMAPRésumé : (Auteur) Multi-VMap is a compact framework from which plane graphs representing geographic maps at different levels of detail can be extracted. Its main feature is that the scale of the extracted map can be variable through its domain, while each entity maintains consistent combinatorial relations with the rest of entities represented in the map. The model is based on a set of operators, called updates, which modify the level of detail in a small portion of a map. The set of updates is partially ordered and can therefore be represented as a Directed Acyclic Graph, which defines our multi-scale structure. An algorithm to extract a map at the required resolution is proposed, and a lower bound for the number of different maps which can be extracted from the model is given. The model supports map data processing operations (e.g., querying), as well as progressive and selective transmission of maps over a network. [Termes IGN] régionalisation (segmentation)Résumé : (Auteur) Regionalization is a classification procedure applied to spatial objects with an areal representation, which groups them into homogeneous contiguous regions. This paper presents an efficient method for regionalization. The first step creates a connectivity graph that captures the neighbourhood relationship between the spatial objects. The cost of each edge in the graph is inversely proportional to the similarity between the regions it joins. We summarize the neighbourhood structure by a minimum spanning tree (MST), which is a connected tree with no circuits. We partition the MST by successive removal of edges that link dissimilar regions. The result is the division of the spatial objects into connected regions that have maximum internal homogeneity. Since the MST partitioning problem is NP-hard, we propose a heuristic to speed up the tree partitioning significantly. Our results show that our proposed method combines performance and quality, and it is a good alternative to other regionalization methods found in the literature. Copyright Taylor & Francis.
