[Termes IGN] LettonieRésumé : (auteur) Countrywide up-to-date tree cover maps provide valuable information for planning and management purposes to investigate location of the resources and to identify afforestation and deforestation patterns. Landsat programme offers freely available satellite data with time span more than three decades and it can serve as bases for tree cover map calculation using satellite image classification; however, practical use of classification methods is limited due to lack of user-friendly solutions and complex interpretation of the results. The objective of this study is to evaluate user-friendly hybrid classification scheme for tree cover mapping in Latvia and to explore the nature of the spectral classes and consistency of the results when methodology is applied to images of different dates. Tree cover in this context means the area covered by crown of the tree, which may or may not be considered as forest according to local provisions. Tree cover is estimated using unsupervised fuzzy c-means methods with the stability check to ensure the presence of the same spectral classes in independent tests. Spectral classes are classified into two categories: tree cover and other by employing k-nearest neighbours. Such approach does not require high quality sample data and does not include user defined internal parameters of the algorithms (however, they can be specified if needed). The best overall accuracy achieved for year 2014 was 94.2% with producer's accuracy 98.7% (tree cover), 90.5% (other land cover), user's accuracy 90.0% (tree cover), 98.8% (other land cover) and kappa 0.89. Consistency studies showed high impact (within 10% of overall accuracy) of unique conditions during the image acquisition. Some of the spectral classes represent borderline case between relatively dense tree cover and other land cover types like sparse young stands. Those cases are the main threat to the consistency between the results of different dates and seasons. [Termes IGN] structure d'un peuplement forestierRésumé : (auteur) The composition, structure and function of forest ecosystems are the key features characterizing their ecological properties, and can thus be crucially shaped and changed by various biotic and abiotic factors on multiple spatial scales. The magnitude and extent of these changes in recent decades calls for enhanced mitigation and adaption measures. Remote sensing data and methods are the main complementary sources of up-to-date synoptic and objective information of forest ecology. Due to the inherent 3D nature of forest ecosystems, the analysis of 3D sources of remote sensing data is considered to be most appropriate for recreating the forest's compositional, structural and functional dynamics. In this Special Issue of Forests, we published a set of state-of-the-art scientific works including experimental studies, methodological developments and model validations, all dealing with the general topic of 3D remote sensing-assisted applications in forest ecology. We showed applications in forest ecology from a broad collection of method and sensor combinations, including fusion schemes. All in all, the studies and their focuses are as broad as a forest's ecology or the field of remote sensing and, thus, reflect the very diverse usages and directions toward which future research and practice will be directed. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Permanent Grasslands (PG) are heterogeneous environments with high spatial and temporal dynamics, subject to increasing environmental challenges. This study aims to identify requirements, key constraining factors and solutions for robust and complete detection of Mowing Events. Remote sensing is a powerful tool to monitor and investigate Near-Real-Time and seasonally PG cover. Here, pros and cons of Sentinel-2 (S2) and Sentinel-1 (S1) time series exploitation for Mowing Events (MowEve) detection are analysed. A deep-based approach is proposed to obtain consistent and homogeneous biophysical parameter times series for MowEve detection. Recurrent Neural Networks are proposed as regression strategy allowing the synergistic integration of optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar data to reconstruct dense NDVI times series. Experimental results corroborates the interest of deriving consistent and homogeneous series of biophysical parameters for subsequent MowEve detection. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (éditeur) Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have already become an affordable and cost-efficient tool to quickly map a targeted area for many emerging applications in the arena of ecological monitoring and biodiversity conservation. Managers, owners, companies, and scientists are using professional drones equipped with high-resolution visible, multispectral, or thermal cameras to assess the state of ecosystems, the effect of disturbances, or the dynamics and changes within biological communities inter alia. We are now at a tipping point on the use of drones for these type of applications over natural areas. UAV missions are increasing but most of them are testing applicability. It is time now to move to frequent revisiting missions, aiding in the retrieval of important biophysical parameters in ecosystems or mapping species distributions. This Special Issue shows UAV applications contributing to a better understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem status, threats, changes, and trends. It documents the enhancement of knowledge in ecological integrity parameters mapping, long-term ecological monitoring based on drones, mapping of alien species spread and distribution, upscaling ecological variables from drone to satellite images: methods and approaches, rapid risk and disturbance assessment using drones, mapping albedo with UAVs, wildlife tracking, bird colony and chimpanzee nest mapping, habitat mapping and monitoring, and a review on drones for conservation in protected areas. Thus, this study aims at comparing the capability of multispectral S2 and airborne hyperspectral remote sensing data for SOC prediction, and at the same time, we investigated the importance of spectral and spatial resolution through the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the variable importance in the prediction (VIP) models and the spatial variability of the SOC maps at field and regional scales. We tested the capability of the S2 data to predict SOC in croplands with quite different soil types and parent materials in Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium, using multivariate statistics and local ground calibration with soil samples. We split the calibration dataset into sub-regions according to soil maps and built a multivariate regression model within each sub-region. The prediction accuracy obtained by S2 data is generally slightly lower than that retrieved by airborne hyperspectral data. The ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) is higher than 2 in Luxembourg (2.6) and German (2.2) site, while it is 1.1 in the Belgian area. After the spectral resampling of the airborne data according to S2 band, the prediction accuracy did not change for four out of five of the sub-regions. The variable importance values obtained by S2 data showed the same trend as the airborne VIP values, while the importance of SWIR bands decreased using airborne data resampled according the S2 bands. These differences of VIP values can be explained by the loss of spectral resolution as compared to APEX data and the strong difference in terms of SNR between the SWIR region and other spectral regions. The investigation on the spatial variability of the SOC maps derived by S2 data has shown that the spatial resolution of S2 is adequate to describe SOC variability both within field and at regional scale.
