[Termes IGN] photo-interprétationRésumé : (Auteur) Five individual projects characterized the spatial performance of the IKONOS commercial imaging sensor. The result was determination of the spatial image quality of IKONOS data products in terms of the National Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale (NIIRS), the system Transfer Function (MTF), the system stability over its first year of operation, the characteristics of the Space Imaging MTF Compensation (MTFC) procedure, and the application specific capabilities of IKONOS imagery. Both panchromatic and multispectral imagery were evaluated. Major conclusions of this work are that the system was stable in imaging performance during the first year of operation, that its MTF meets the specification for the NASA Scientific Data Purchase program, that the initial MTFC processing appears to transposed in the intrack and the crosstrack directions, that the MTFC results in a noise amplification of 2 X to 4 X in addition to sharpening the imagery, and that IKONOS panchromatic imagery achieves an average NIIRS rating of 4.5. [Termes IGN] modèle de transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) A radiometric characterization of Space Imaging's IKONOS 4-m multispectral imagery has been performed by a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) funded team from NASA Stennis Space Center, the University of Arizona Remote Sensing Group (U of ARSG), and South Dakota State University (SDSU). Both intrinsic radiometry and the effects of Space Imaging processing on radiometry were investigated. Relative radiometry was examined with uniform Antarctic and Saharan sites. Absolute radiometric calibration was performed using reflectance-based vicarious calibration methods on several uniform sites imaged by IKONOS coincident with Ground-based surface and atmospheric measurements. Ground-based data and the IKONOS spectral response function served as input to radiative transfer codes to generate a top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance estimate. Calibration coefficients derived from each vicarious calibration were combined to generate an IKONOS radiometric gain coefficient for each multispectral band assuming a linear response over the full dynamic range of the instrument. These calibration coefficients were made available to Space Imaging, which subsequently adopted them by updating its initial set of callibration coefficients. IKONOS imagery procured through the NASA Scientific Data Purchase was processed with or without a Modulation Transfer Function Compensation (MTFC) kernel. The radiometric effects of this kernel on various scene types were also investigated. [Termes IGN] statistique mathématiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a methodology to map classes of degraded forest in the Eastern Amazon. Forest degradation field data, available in the literature, and 1-m resolution IKONOS image were linked with fraction images (vegetation, nonphotosynthetic vegetation (NPV), soil and shade) derived from spectral mixture models applied to a Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) 4 multispectral image. The forest degradation map was produced in two steps. First, we investigated the relationship between ground (i.e., field and IKONOS data) and satellite scales by analyzing statistics and performing visual analyses of the field classes in terms of fraction values. This procedure allowed us to define four classes of forest at the SPOT 4 image scale, which included: intact forest; logged forest (recent and older logged forests in the field); degraded forest (heavily burned, heavily logged and burned forests in the field) ; and regeneration (old heavily logged and old heavily burned forest in the field). Next, we used a decision tree classifier (DTQ to define a set of rules to separate the forest classes using the fraction images. We classified 35% of the forest area (2097.3 km2 ) as intact forest. Logged forest accounted for 56% of the forest area and 9% of the forest area was classified as degraded forest. The resultant forest degradation map showed good agreement (86% overall accuracy) with areas of degraded forest visually interpreted from two IKONOS images. In addition, high correlation (R2 = 0.97) was observed between the total live aboveground biomass of degraded forest classes (defined at the field scale) and the NPV fraction image. The NPV fraction also improved our ability to mapping of old selectively logged forests. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) The relationships between field water reflectance spectra and physicochemical data of seven freshwater and five saltwater lakes from the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands were characterized. Selection of the lakes was based on previous inspection of the Airborne Visible/infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) images. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify homogeneous groups of lakes, in which the regression relationships were evaluated. The continuum removal method was applied to characterize minor spectral variations in the depth of the absorption bands present in field and image spectra. The results showed lakes with very distinct spectral characteristics. The transition from the freshwater to the saltwater lakes was characterized by lower values of depth and Secchi depth, larger concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total suspended sediments (TSS), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na) and potassium (K), and higher values of pH and electrical conductivity. The saline lakes presented a higher overall reflectance in the 400900 nm range than the freshwater lakes, as indicated by the first principal component. From the optically active constituents analysed, DOC better explained variations in water reflectance. The discrimination of the saltwater lakes along the second principal component was due to the decrease in the chlorophyll (Chl) and to the increase in the DOC concentrations from the greenish to the bluish saline lakes. The AVIRIS instrument was able to detect the narrow 630 nm absorption band present in field water reflectance spectra. [Termes IGN] Virginie (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) A credit assignment approach to decision-based classifier fusion is developed and applied to the problem of land-cover classification from multiseason airborne hyperspectral imagery. For each input sample, the new method uses a smoothed estimated reliability measure (SERM) in the output domain of the classifiers. SERM requires no additional training beyond that needed to optimize the constituent classifiers in the pool, and its generalization (test) accuracy exceeds that of a number of other extant methods for classifier fusion. Hyperspectral imagery from HyMAP and PROBE2 acquired at three points in the growing season over Smith Island, VA, a barrier island in the Nature Conservancy's Virginia Coast Reserve, serves as the basis for comparing SERM with other approaches.
