[Termes IGN] réflectance spectraleRésumé : (auteur) Remote sensing has potential in studies of the benthic habitat and extracting the reflectance from the data of multispectral sensors, but traditional image classification techniques cannot provide coral habitat maps with adequate accuracy. This study tested five traditional and three ensemble classification techniques on QuickBird for mapping the benthic composition of coral reefs on the Lang Tengah Island (Malaysia). The common techniques, minimum distance, maximum likelihood, K-nearest neighbour, Fisher and parallelepiped techniques were compared with ensemble classifiers, such as majority voting (MV), simple averaging, and mode combination. The per-class accuracy of the habitat detection improved in the ensemble classifiers; in particular, the MV classifier achieved 95%, 65%, 75% and 95% accuracies for coral, sparse coral, coral rubble and sand, respectively. Ensembles increased the accuracy of the habitat mapping classification by 28%, relative to conventional techniques. Thus, the ensemble techniques can be preferred over the traditional for benthic habitat mapping. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Information of built-up area is essential for various applications, such as sustainable development or urban planning. Built-up area extraction using optical data is challenging due to spectral confusion between built-up and other classes (bare land or river sand, etc.). Here an automated approach has been proposed to generate built-up maps using spectral-textural features and feature selection techniques. Eight Grey-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix based texture features are extracted using Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager bands and combined with multispectral data. The most informative features are selected from combined spectral-textural dataset using feature selection techniques. Further, Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers are trained on labelled samples using optimal features and results are compared with Back Propagation-Neural Network (BP-NN) and k-Nearest Neighbour (k-NN). The results show that inclusion of textural features and applying feature selection methods increases the highest overall accuracy of Linear-SVM, RBF-SVM, BP-NN, and k-NN by 9.20%, 9.09%, 8.42%, and 7.39%, respectively. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) In this article, we propose an efficient and effective framework to fuse hyperspectral and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data using two coupled convolutional neural networks (CNNs). One CNN is designed to learn spectral–spatial features from hyperspectral data, and the other one is used to capture the elevation information from LiDAR data. Both of them consist of three convolutional layers, and the last two convolutional layers are coupled together via a parameter-sharing strategy. In the fusion phase, feature-level and decision-level fusion methods are simultaneously used to integrate these heterogeneous features sufficiently. For the feature-level fusion, three different fusion strategies are evaluated, including the concatenation strategy, the maximization strategy, and the summation strategy. For the decision-level fusion, a weighted summation strategy is adopted, where the weights are determined by the classification accuracy of each output. The proposed model is evaluated on an urban data set acquired over Houston, USA, and a rural one captured over Trento, Italy. On the Houston data, our model can achieve a new record overall accuracy (OA) of 96.03%. On the Trento data, it achieves an OA of 99.12%. These results sufficiently certify the effectiveness of our proposed model. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (auteur) Airborne hyperspectral remote sensing is an important application in the ecological monitoring of the environment in mining areas, and accurate preprocessing of the original images is the key to quantitative information retrieval. The original image data need radiation correction to acquire surface reflectance data. Due to the impact of the field angle, incidental radiance, and the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), there can be a brightness gradient between adjacent strips, which leads to radiance difference and obvious chromatic aberration of the mosaicked images. We propose a novel data correction method for seamless mosaicking of airborne hyperspectral images. Firstly, visible and near-infrared (VNIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) sensors are calibrated in the laboratory, and the radiation calibration model of the sensor is established by an integrating-sphere system. A correction function is then established by combining the BRDF effect and the radiation attenuation coefficients. We also normalize the exposure time, sun altitude angle, and sensor altitude angle according to the flight strip. The results showed that this method is able to eliminate the signal distortion, allowing the seamless mosaicking of 37 strip images which were taken in different date and conditions in the study area. After the atmospheric correction of the imagery was completed, the accuracy of the preprocessing results was evaluated by field-measured ASD spectroradiometer data. The coefficient of determination R2 of the results for the reflectance was greater than 0.9. The experiments show that the proposed method has a good performance in radiation accuracy, and can provide high-quality hyperspectral data for the follow-up application of the ecological monitoring of a mining area. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Australia is one of the world’s largest producers of macadamia nuts. As macadamia trees can take up to 15 years to mature and produce maximum yield, it is important to optimize tree condition. Field based assessment of macadamia tree condition is time-consuming and often inconsistent. Using remotely sensed imagery may allow for faster, more extensive, and more consistent assessment of macadamia tree condition. To identify individual macadamia tree crowns, high spatial resolution imagery is required. Hence, the objective of this work was to develop and test an approach to map the condition of individual macadamia tree crowns using both multi-spectral Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and WorldView-3 imagery for different macadamia varieties and three different sites located near Bundaberg, Australia. A random forest classifier, based on all available spectral bands and selected vegetation indices was used to predict five condition categories, ranging from excellent (category 1) to poor (category 5). Various combinations of the developed models were tested between the three sites and over time. The results showed that the multi-spectral WorldView-3 imagery produced the lowest out of bag (OOB) classification errors in most cases. However, for both the UAV and the WorldView-3 imagery, more than 98.5% of predicted macadamia condition categories were either correctly mapped or offset by a single category out of the five condition categories (excellent, good, moderate, fair and poor) for trees of the same variety and at one point in time. Multi-temporally, the WorldView-3 imagery performed better than the UAV data for predicting the condition of the same macadamia tree variety. Applying a model from one site to another site with the same macadamia tree variety produced OOB classification between 31.20 and 42.74%, but with >98.63% of trees predicted within a single condition category. Importantly, models trained based on one type of macadamia tree variety could not be successfully applied to a site with another variety. The developed classification models may be used as a decision and management support tool for the macadamia industry to inform management practices and improve on-demand irrigation, fertilization, and pest inspection at the individual tree level.
