[Termes IGN] service web géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Mapping vegetation height over large areas presents a problem of scale: height varies with the individual tree or stand, but the resolution of available datasets is too low to characterize this variability sufficiently for many applications. We address this problem by fusing 1 km resolution canopy height data derived from satellite-based laser altimetry with higher-resolution land-cover data, resulting in 30 m resolution estimates of canopy height. These are downscaled further to 1 m resolution by simulating individual trees. A web service architecture is used, which allows processing to occur on demand without preprocessing large datasets. We compared the resulting canopy volumes to reference airborne lidar data from 262 randomly located 1 km2 areas within nine study sites. Results at 30 m resolution show an RMSE of 33 percent of the mean reference volume and an R2 of 0.77; at 1 m the RMSE is 66 percent and the R2 is 0.38. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) A canopy height model (chm) derived from lidar data can be segmented to obtain individual tree crowns. However, branches, tree crowns, and tree clusters usually have similar shapes and overlapping sizes. This causes current individual tree crown delineation methods for CHMs to work less effectively on closed canopy deciduous or mixed wood forests consisting of various-sized tree crowns. Based on mult-scale analysis and segmentation, an innovative tree crown delineation method was developed in this study. In this method, the scale levels of target tree crowns are first morphologically determined; the CHM is filtered at the multiple scale levels; and local maxima within each filtered CHM are taken as markers to segment the original chm using the marker-controlled watershed method. After tree crown segments are selected from the multiple resulting segmentation maps and integrated together, a complete tree crown map is generated. In an experiment on natural forests in Ontario, Canada, the proposed method yielded crown maps having a good consistency with manual and visual interpretation. For instance, when compared to a manually delineated forest map, the automated method correctly delineated about 69 percent, 65 percent, and 73 percent of the tree crowns from plots of closed canopy coniferous, deciduous, and mixed wood forests, respectively.

[Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a multi-scale method that computes robust geometric features on lidar point clouds in order to retrieve the optimal neighborhood size for each point. Three dimensionality features are calculated on spherical neighborhoods at various radius sizes. Based on combinations of the eigenvalues of the local structure tensor, they describe the shape of the neighborhood, indicating whether the local geometry is more linear (1D), planar (2D) or volumetric (3D). Two radius-selection criteria have been tested and compared for finding automatically the optimal neighborhood radius for each point. Besides, such procedure allows a dimensionality labelling, giving significant hints for classification and segmentation purposes. The method is successfully applied to 3D point clouds from airborne, terrestrial, and mobile mapping systems since no a priori knowledge on the distribution of the 3D points is required. Extracted dimensionality features and labellings are then favorably compared to those computed from constant size neighborhoods. [Termes IGN] relation topologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The scale dependences of topological relations are caused by the changes of spatial objects at different scales, which are induced by the reduction of attributes. Generally, the detailed partitions and multi-scale attributes are stored in spatial databases, while the coarse partitions are not. Consequently, the detailed topological relations can be computed and regarded as known information, while the coarse relations stay unknown. However, many applications (e.g., multi-scale spatial data query) need to deal with the topological relations at multiple scales. In this study new methods are proposed to model and derive the scale dependences of topological relations between lines and multi-scale region partitions. The scale dependences of topological relations are modeled and used to derive the relations between lines and coarse partitions from the relations about the detailed partitions. The derivation can be performed in two steps. At the first step, the topological dependences between a line and two meeting, covered and contained regions are computed and stored into composition tables, respectively. At the second step, a graph is used to represent the neighboring relations among the regions in a detailed partition. The scale dependences and detailed relations are then used to derive topological relations at the coarse level. Our methods can also be extended to handle the scale dependences of relations about disconnected regions, or the combinations of connected and disconnected regions. Because our methods use the scale dependences to derive relations at the coarse level, rather than generating coarse partition and computing the relations with geometric information, they are more efficient to support scale-dependent applications.
