[Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) The extraction of road networks from aerial images is one of the current challenges in digital photogrammetry and computer vision. In this paper, we present a practical system for 3D road network reconstruction from aerial images using knowledgebased image analysis. In contrast to other approaches, the developed system integrates processing of color image data and information from digital spatial databases, extracts and fuses multiple object cues, takes into account context information, employs existing knowledge, rules and models, and treats each road subclass accordingly. The key of the system is the use of knowledge as much as possible to increase success rate and reliability of the results, working in 2D images and 3D object space, and use of 2D and 3D interaction when needed. Another advantage of the developed system is that it can correctly and reliably handle problematic areas caused by shadows and occlusions. This work is part of a project to improve and update the 1:25,000 vector maps of Switzerland. The system has been implemented as a stand-alone software package, and has been tested on a large number of images with different landscape. In this paper, various parts of the developed system are discussed, and the results of our system in recent benchmark tests conducted independently by our project partner in Switzerland, and the test results with black and white images in a test site in Belgium are presented together with the system performance evaluation. [Termes IGN] unification des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents some research on the unification of different geographic databases. We describe the interest of multiple representations and databases unification, for data users as well as data managers. We also define a global framework for the unification of geographic databases: from the individual databases analysis to the definition and instantiation of a unified database. Then, we describe results from experiments led to unify the hydrographic themes of two actual DB from IGN-France with different scales. The teachings of these experiments concern the role of implicit information encountered in geographic databases, either inside one database or between two databases. These experiments also enlighten the need of formal information management tools. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur)GIS-based measurements that combine native raster and native vector data are commonly used in environmental assessments. Most of these measurements can be calculated using either raster or vector data formats and processing methods. Raster processes are more commonly used because they can be significantly faster computationally than vector, but error is introduced in converting vector data to raster. This conversion error has been widely studied and quantified, but the impact on environmental assessment results has not been investigated. We examined four Gis-based measurements commonly used in environmental assessments for approximately 1000 watersheds in the state of Maryland and Washington, D.C. Each metric was calculated using vector and raster methods, and estimated values were compared using a paired t-test, Spearman rank correlation, and cluster analyses. Paired t-tests were used to determine the statistical significance of quantitative differences between methods, and Spearman rank correlation and cluster analyses were used to evaluate the impact of the differences on environmental assessments. Paired t-test results indicated significant quantitative differences between methods for three of the four metrics. However, Spearman ranks and cluster analyses indicated that the quantitative differences would not affect environmental assessment results. Spearman rank correlations between vector and raster values were greater than 0.98 for all comparisons. Cluster analyses resulted in identical assignment for 88 percent to over 98 percent of watersheds analyzed among vector and various raster methods. [Termes IGN] traitement automatique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Updating digital map databases to reflect continuous changes is a major task, which could be significantly reduced by introducing an automated change-detection process. We suggest an algorithm inspired by the specific problem of updating the Danish National Topographic Map Database (TOP10DK). The emphasis is on buildings, which are very important mapping objects. The algorithm uses vector and spectral data as input to an unsupervised spectral classification method which controls a subsequent Mahalanobis classification step. For evaluation, we present four test cases based on the TOP10DK database in combination with RGB and color-infrared (CIR) aerial photos. A main problem is roofs covered with roofing felt, which are hard to discriminate spectrally from roads. Apart from that, RGB photos are barely sufficient for change detection, while CIR data give more satisfactory results. Refinements are, however, still needed to reduce the number of false alarms. [Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (Auteur) Error propagation of buffer analysis in a vectorbased geographical information system (GIS) is studied with the use of statistics and numerical analyses. In this paper, such factors as the error of commission, the error of omission, the discrepant area and the normalized discrepant area are proposed as the error indicators of buffer analysis. Analytical expressions for the error indicators are developed as multiple integrals. A numerical integration method is recommended to find an approximation to the analytical expression.
